For the first time ever, Prince fans have the opportunity to spend a night in the house used in the legendary musician’s Purple Rain film.
The late musician, who passed away at the age of 57 in 2016, purchased the Minneapolis home a year before his death.
Although Prince never lived there, his character ‘The Kid’ – a musician and band leader with a rocky life – from the 1984 film called it home on screen.
While it has been closed to the public for the last nine years, the house has been newly refurbished and restored to celebrate 40 years since the release of the iconic film.
‘The Purple Rain House’ is hosted by musicians Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, Prince’s former bandmates in The Revolution and his Purple Rain co-stars.
The white, two-story home looks unassuming from the outside but inside has been transformed into a shrine to the singer with several unique features, including purple velvet wallpaper, a vintage 1980s stereo and stained-glass windows.
The Airbnb is packed with memorabilia and artwork, with the lounge featuring guitars, drums and an upright piano for guests to perform in. The hosts have even left instructions to play the chorus of ‘Purple Rain’.
The bathroom, meanwhile, has been decorated as a tribute to one of Wendy & Lisa’s favourite music videos ‘When Doves Cry’ complete with a claw-foot tub, purple bath robes, face masks and lavender bath bombs.
Guests can also wade through the ‘safari’ that is the closet, with a collection of 80s-inspired outfits and accessories available to dress up in. The musician’s legendary outfits are displayed behind glass for fans to look at too.
Airbnb has also teased guests with a hidden room ‘filled with treasures’, which requires a ‘secret door’ to enter.
The space will be available for 25 total one-night stays for up to four guests.
Fans can request a booking online on Airbnb, starting on October 2 to October 6, with stays available from October 26 to December 14.
Potential guests will be chosen at random, and the final invitations to rent will be based on fans’ answers to why they want to stay there, according to Airbnb.
Each stay will be priced at $7 (£5.23) per person – a nod to Prince’s favourite number.
‘We were lucky enough to be a part of the music scene in Minneapolis during such a pivotal era for rock music, playing with Prince in one of the most successful bands of our generation and starring alongside him in the Purple Rain film,’ Wendy & Lisa said.
‘The Purple Rain house stands as a tribute to our dear friend Prince, the timeless character he brought to life, and the lasting impact he continues to have.
‘We hope the space gives fans a glimpse into the eclectic world Prince created, and visitors walk away feeling a little bit closer to him as an artist and person.’
