Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5th October every year. This day aims to pay tribute to the contributions made by the teacher and their important role in society. Teachers do not just transfer knowledge but also enrich our character and personality. The day was initiated in 1966 by holding a convention on the rights and obligations of teachers as UNESCO believed that there is equality among the subjects taught and must hence be treated equally.
Teachers’ Day is just such a place where we glorify the teaching profession and respect the contribution that teachers present to society. This day aims to express thanks towards their strenuous efforts in education and explain how important it is for people to have a teacher.
The Special Intergovernmental Conference of the International Labor Organization and UNESCO, held in Paris on 1966, adopted the Recommendations Relating to the Status of Teachers. The convention thus defined both rights as well as responsibilities of teachers. The first celebration of this day was on October 5, 1994-the 30th anniversary of the 1966 recommendation.
Different activities are planned on this day to thank the teachers. School organs conduct special ceremonies, and speeches and presentations from students are delivered. This day is a gift-giving day for small presents to express love and respect to the teacher.
The theme of World Teachers’ Day 2024 is “Empowering Teachers: Strengthening Tolerance, Building Sustainability.” The focus of this theme is to arm teachers with knowledge and resources so that they can give in children a sense of social consciousness and environmental awareness, too.
Every year, World Teachers’ Day is celebrated as a great chance to recognize the important position that teachers hold in our society and show appreciation for their efforts.
