Kaizer Chiefs embrace technology, trophies to follow?

Kaizer Chiefs have embraced new technological advancements in their technical team to find solutions to their problems. It’s about time.

Kaizer Chiefs embrace technology in the dugout

Following the lead of Sundowns, Nabi and his technical team have taken on board a host of new electronic equipment to help them analyse performances while they happen and to take a closer look at refereeing decisions in real-time.

Controversy around Rayners’ winner against Amakhosi

Iqraam Rayners scored a controversial winner against Kaizer Chiefs in the Glamour Boys’ most recent league outing. The former Stellies man appeared to be offside. Referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa dismissed Chiefs’ electronic equipment after they voiced their dissatisfaction following the decision.

Via SoccerLaduma:

“The law says the use of any form of electronic communication by team officials is permitted where it relates to player welfare, tactical or coaching purposes,” former referee Victor Hlungwane said on Metro FM Sports.

“A team official who uses unauthorized equipment or who behaves in an inappropriate manner as a result of electronic communication equipment must be sent off.

“We never saw [a technical member] being sent off but we saw the gadget being sent off. We were shocked, we don’t have such a law. Incorrect decision by the ref to send the gadgets off, he should have sent off the [ technical member] who behaved inappropriately as the result of the use of communication devices. So that was incorrect for Casa to send the communication device off,” Hlungwane added.

MTN8 final controversy

Renowned local agent Mike Makaab wasn’t hiding his disgust at Abongile Tom’s decision to allow Tshegofatso Mabasa’s 91st-minute strike in the final. Stellenbosch manager Steve Barker has been vocal about his desire for VAR to be USD in South Africa. However, this wasn’t even a decision that would usually need VAR. Referee Tom should have been close enough to the action to judge that the free-kick needed to be retaken from the correct spot. Yet here we are.

Kaizer Chiefs must wait 20 days

Amakhosi, meanwhile, have three weeks to wait until their next Betway Premiership fixture. They’ve started this campaign in decent fashion, with two wins from three, and a recent defeat to Sundowns. Their goal, of course, will be to compete for next season’s MTN8 at a minimum. Here are their next few fixtures:

  • SuperSport United – Saturday, October 26, Lucas Moripe Stadium, 17:30
  • Magesi FC – Wednesday, October 30, Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, 19:30
  • Royal AM – Sunday, November 9 – FNB Stadium, 17:30
