Kaizer Chiefs coach and Ex-Arrows mentor hired as joint head coaches of AmaZulu
Usuthu has officially appointed Arthur Zwane and Vusimuzi Vilakazi as joint head coaches, a move that signals the club’s bold and unconventional approach. Initially rumoured to be an assistant coach role for Vilakazi, sources reveal that AmaZulu also reached out to Kaizer Chiefs regarding Zwane’s services, demonstrating their commitment to a unique coaching structure.
The appointment comes on the heels of AmaZulu parting ways with Pablo Franco Martin after just three games this season, all of which ended in losses. On Tuesday, the club announced their new coaching duo, stating, “Usuthu has officially named Arthur ‘1011’ Zwane and Vusimuzi ‘Kanu’ Vilakazi as joint first team head coaches in a move which will see the SA-born coaching duo assume their roles with immediate effect.”
Experience meets opportunity
AmaZulu President Sandile Zungu emphasised the importance of the new coaches’ experience, stating, “Their combined experience as both coaches and former professional players will be crucial in developing our younger talents and guiding our seasoned players in the task ahead.” This combination of seasoned leadership and youth development could be exactly what Usuthu needs.
AmaZulu’s search for a new coach included speculation about several candidates, including former coach Benni McCarthy. Initially, the club pursued Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen, but contractual obligations thwarted that effort. Zungu had also directed Director of Football Pedro Dias to engage Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp, although negotiations likely fell through.
Zwane’s opportunity for redemption
Arthur Zwane concluded his time at Kaizer Chiefs in June 2023 after a trophyless season, despite high expectations. His transition to co-coach at AmaZulu offers him a chance to reignite his coaching career and silence critics. Known for his talent development, Zwane aims to instil a winning mentality within the squad.
An intriguing coaching dynamic
This co-coaching setup presents a fascinating dynamic. Vilakazi, who previously managed Usuthu’s DStv Diski Challenge side, will collaborate with Zwane, combining diverse tactical perspectives. Their success hinges on forging a strong working relationship and effectively managing team dynamics.
With their first assignment in the Carling Knockout Cup next weekend, both coaches are set to get down to work. Fans of Usuthu will eagerly watch how this unconventional approach unfolds, hoping it brings much-needed stability and success to the club.
