Reports that Bonang Matheba’s House of BNG beverages have taken a big knock – and massive price discount on shelves – have come as a surprise to many South Africans.
But the media darling not the first local celeb to make a loss when it comes to business endevaours
BONANG’S HOUSE OF BNG PRICE PLUMMETS
In a social media post this week, celebrity blogger Musa Khawula revealed that Bonang Matheba’s House of BNG bottle of champagne had been massively discounted from R399 to R99.
This included a picture of the price on the shelves of an undisclosed Woolworths store.
While Bonang has yet to respond to the reports, an industry insider claimed that it was to be expected.
Champagne importer @monsieurponto tweeted: “It’s not only her. A lot of alcohol brands are being uplifted (meaning removed from the shelves for nonperformance)
“Alcohol sales have dropped dramatically this year, especially spirits and wines. People are opting for beer and ciders.”
MORE CELEB BUSINESS FLOPS
Bonang is not the only celebrity businessperson to suffer major losses due to poor sales.
This week, Drip Footwear – founded by Lekau Sehoana – was ordered into liquidation by the Johannesburg High Court over mounting unpaid bills. According to IOL, several stores have been closed, and dozens of employees around the country have been retrenched.
Earlier this year, Boity Thulo confirmed that her perfume, Pink Sapphire Eau de parfum, and her haircare range Halo Heritage – both launched in 2020 – had flopped.
She shared in an Instagram post: “Don’t be afraid to try. And never allow the fear of failure to cripple you. The dream was placed in your heart for a purpose. It will eventually work out exactly the way it’s meant to. We are still learning”.
They’ve often been pitted against each other, but Bonang’s “nemesis,” DJ Zinhle, also knows the downfalls of side hustles. Her furniture business, Jiyane Atelier, quietly closed down last year amid claims of liquidation, reported Sunday World.
Another Bonang rival – Minnie Dlamini – had her beauty business, MD Body declared insolvent.
She later confirmed, “I had to liquidate the company. Things happen. When you work with people, it does not always end well. It was a great learning curve for me, and with everything that happens in life, I always say that it is a learning curve and an opportunity to learn how to do things better.”
After starting up his own burger joint, Buns Out, in 2020, model and media personality Maps Maponyane made the tough decision to close shop two years later.
According to the star, load shedding and the COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on the business.
