A TikToker “mommy influencer” has gone viral for asking South Africans how much they spend each month on their children’s school fees. And the comments will no doubt shock you!
TIKTOKER’S QUESTION ABOUT SCHOOL FEES GO VIRAL
On TikTok, influencer @tonidigitalmarketing asked her followers how much they pay for school fees each month.
According to the woman – a single mother – she spends R3 000 on daycare for her toddler daughter.
The woman claimed she earned just R5 700.
She said: “I have to cover the cost myself. I’m also a graduate, but I live in a country with a high unemployment rate. So I’m working any job because working any joy is better than being unemployed.
“I go to work to get some money, but I also have to pay daycare fees because I don’t have anyone to look after my daughter.”
In the comment section, South Africans were shocked at the woman’s revelation.
“How do you live for the month on R2 700?” asked one TikToker
The woman went on to claim that she had been forced to take a drastic pay cut when she started a new job.
“Life happens, and we learn to roll with the punches,” she added.

Others revealed the vast amounts they were forking out for school fees, likely for private schools.
@___larissajade: “My kids is in grade two – R8k school fees, R2k aftercare, R1k extra murals. My kid in Grade 000 is R3,8k plus R1K for extra murals. R16k in total roughly”.
@raerae_2908: “Close to R17k, it’s a private remedial school because my child has special needs.”
@mojerrtie: “R12k for two kids and just lost my job.”
@kjay_70: “My daughter is in Grade R, and we spend almost R9 000.”
FREE EDUCATION?
While South Africa has a number of elite and pricey private schools, the Department of Basic Education reveals that many government schools in the country offer “no fee” or free education.
Additionally, the department revealed that parents who could not afford to pay school fees could apply to the school governing board for conditional, partial, or full exemption.
