In the absence of club captain Yusuf Maart, Kaizer Chiefs handed over armband duties to new signing Inácio Miguel during last weekends Cufa Cup victory.
The Angolan international has uplifted the Glamour Boys’ pursuit of silverware, leading the team from the back through actions and words.
Interestingly, he kept the armband on when Maart was introduced in the second half but did hand it over before the medal ceremony.
Many are speculating (and hoping) whether the Soweto Giants will hand over captain duties to the defender.
Maart not clicking
Despite an impressive start to the season, many have pointed at Maart as the weakest link in the side.
And, after being benched last game, it seems Nabi Nasreddine thinks so, too; however, it could have been for rest purposes.
Following the match, Miguel wrote on Instagram, saying, “Leadership is an action, not a position,” the 28-year-old said via an Instagram post.
“Happy for the effort & quality the team showed today [Sunday], & happy also to contribute to bringing a trophy to the Amakhosi nation. Together we are much stronger. Let’s go for more.”
Kaizer Chiefs lie 6th on the log, three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Miguel’s vision with Kaizer Chiefs
Before his side’s clash with reigning champions Sundowns, Miguel sat down with SABC Sport, saying, “I’m trying to adapt as fast as possible and make them [teammates] command themselves. Because, if we have 11 commanders, it will be much easier than having one.
“My mission at Kaizer Chiefs is to make all of them [players] commanders, and then it will be easier, absolutely. I don’t need an armband, it’s just a [symbol].
“My mission is to be a leaders, but without showing everyone [with an armband] that I’m a leader, I have to prove I am a leader with the results, effort, how I train everyday, and being an example for the young boys.
“As people say, I know in social media they talk a lot about, ‘You need the armband.’ No, the armband is good with Yusuf, I respect him as a captain,” he added.
“He’s played many times for Kaizer Chiefs, I see him as a leader – he’s a true leader, and I don’t need the armband, I just need everyone to stick together and everyone will be their own captain in this team. We have to understand that we need 11 captains, not one.”
