Popular rugby analyst quits social media due to online abuse

International rugby analyst Squidge Rugby is one of the most widely-respected content creators across the globe, with his unique analysis videos garnering millions of views.

On YouTube, he has nearly 250 000 subscribers, while on X (formerly Twitter) he boasts over 100 000 followers.

However, in a social media post this week, he stated that he is walking away from X as a result of the online abuse that has taken a toll on his mental health.

“Hard to overstate just how much this place (X) being my default ‘Waste 5 minutes’ app has affected my mental health over the last few months. The scale and aggression of shit in my mentions & DMs every day for 3 months is something I sincerely hope nobody else ever has to go through,” he wrote.

“I could recount all the shit I’ve received (Threats of violence, assertions about my character, kill yourself stuff, nothing I haven’t had before) but ultimately, I just don’t want to do this anymore, and with the site going the way it is anyway, I don’t see any point trying.

“We’ve got a new video coming tomorrow and maybe I pop back in every so often to share new videos and updates, but being here all day every day, getting a new log of shit every few minutes has ground my mental health down into a fine paste. And I don’t want that anymore.”

His social media statement has received thousands of view, and hundreds of comments, with many fans of his work expressing their disappointment – and support – after seeing this decision.
