Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane could be ruled out for the rest if the year due to an Achilles tendon injury.
The 35-year-old was injured during Bafana Bafana‘s draw against Congo Brazzaville in an away 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played on Tuesday evening.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos explained how serious Zwane’s injury is.
Sundowns captain Themba Zwane ruled out for months
“Themba Zwane is a very important player for us. It was not a good thing for us that Themba had to go out with an injury,” Broos said.
“It is a big injury, it is an Achilles tendon injury. I’m afraid he will be out for months. So, again, when you lose such an important player, it’s difficult, certainly in a game where you dominated,” he said.
Although Zwane has been underutilised by Sundowns, Broos has relied on the Masandawana captain for over two years now. The player known as ‘Mshishi’ earned his 50th cap for his country last week during Bafana’s 5-0 win over Congo.
“It’s always difficult to lose such a player because Themba is someone who can keep the ball, who can give the last pass. So, he was not there and maybe that was also a reason why we didn’t play so well,” Broos said to the media.
Mamelodi Sundowns play a lot of games in November and Decemeber and having their captain out could affect the team. Mshishi has been with the Downs team for a decade winning more than 10 trophies.
Will Mshishi’s injury impact Downs this season?
