EFF sees RED as Fana Mokoena quits parliament, more to follow?

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member Fana Mokoena has resigned from parliament just four months after he was sworn in as an MP.

It is unclear at this stage if the 53-year-old politician is still a member of the organisation. On Thursday, parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo confirmed Mokoena’s resignation as MP.

“We can confirm that the Speaker is in receipt of a letter of resignation from Mr Mokoena,” he said.

As per IOL, Mokoena reportedly sent his letter to the party secretary-general, Marshall Dlamini, last week. Another member, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, tendered her resignation letter.

In a letter that she posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mkhwebane thanked the EFF for the support.

“Today, I’m saying goodbye to you, Fighters. After careful consideration and talking to my family, they advised and felt I needed to go away. Spend time with them, rest, and continue to fight for the vulnerable where possible.

Fana Mokoena leaves Parliament, but is he still with the EFF?

“In my time of need, you Fighters extended a helping hand, becoming a refuge for me over the past 12 months. Your unwavering support has been a beacon of hope, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Now, it is time for me to focus on spending cherished moments with my family,” the letter read.

Mkhwebane joins the likes of Floyd Shivambu and Mzwanele Manyi, who also left the party.

Fana Mokoena has yet to respond since resigning as an EFF MP. The party have also not issued a statement or explained why the actor left parliament.
