Springbok bad boy Elton Jantjies steps into the ring for charity boxing fight

Springboks Elton Jantjies and Lionel Mapoe will swap the rugby field for the ring for a boxing charity event set to take place in Durban next month.

Elton Jantjies banned for 4 years

Jantjies revealed on social media that he’ll face his former Lions and Springboks team-mate following weeks of teasing an announcement.

The fight is scheduled to take place on 30 November.

‘Getting into the ring was always one of my passionate dreams,’ Jantjies wrote.

‘The sport of boxing is one of my tools to stay sharp on the rugby field and endure a proper high intensity game.’

The controversial 34-year-old has not played rugby since he was handed a four-year suspension earlier this year after failing a drugs test prior to last year’s World Cup in France.

He was suspended for the use of the banned substance Clenbuterol, but has vowed to return to the field of play.

The playmaker was also sent home while the Springboks were in Argentina to face Los Pumas in 2022 following bombshell news of an alleged affair with team dietician Zeenat Simjee.

Mapoe, a former Lions team-mate of Elton Jantjies’s, is now with the Bulls and recently played in their Currie Cup campaign.

‘Stepping into the ring with a pro, is something else, suddenly you have to anticipate and adjust and hope he don’t knock you out lol. I still have a lot to learn,’ Mapoe said in an Instagram post.

Mapoe, 36, played the last of his 14 Tests for the Springboks in 2018.
