Why strikers used to get scared of me – Orlando Pirates legend

Orlando Pirates legend Gavin Lane has revealed why strikers used to be afraid of him during his playing days.

The man known by fans as “Stability Unit” was a no-nonsense defender and made strikers feel unease with his timely tackles. He was part of the Buccaneers squad that won the 1995 CAF Champions League. Speaking to Kick-Off, the former Bafana Bafana defender touched on how football has changed in the past 30 years. He did criticise how players easily fall to the ground when they are challenged for the ball.

Orlando Pirates legend Gavin Lane talks about modern players

“The guys who fall too easily looking for a foul from the referee just to gain set pieces, football is a man’s game, these guys must man up and play the game. I get irritated every time when that happens,” he told the publication

At Orlando Pirates, Lane was feared by many opposition teams. His no-nonsense attitude intimidated a lot of strikers even before he made a single tackle.

“I always believed in myself and what I could do. I was always looking to win balls through good tackles. The reason some players were scared of me is because I used to talk a lot of nonsense to the opposition strikers, telling them things like ‘hey ngizokushaya wena!” Lane added.

Stability Unit is one of the few ex-football stars who found some success after football. The 57-year-old currently runs a business in Durban.

Orlando Pirates are in action against SuperSport United in the Betway Premiership clash.
