Kaizer Chiefs see clear path to a trophy, but…

Kaizer Chiefs are hunting for silverware and they could be in luck this season if they get past one more massive obstacle.

Carling Knockout quarter-final draw pits Kaizer Chiefs against Sundowns

Chiefs, Magesi, Richards Bay, and Marumo Gallants were in the unseeded pot. Meanwhile, Sundowns, Cape Town City, TS Galaxy and Stellenbosch were the seeded sides after finishing in the top eight last season. Amakhosi knew they were getting a seeded opponent and got the most difficult task on paper. However, if they can get past the Brazilians they’ll quietly fancy their chances of going all the way. Here’s the full draw with the holders Stellenbosch travelling to Limpopo to face Marumo Gallants.

  • Richards Bay vs Cape Town City
  • Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns
  • TS Galaxy vs Magesi FC

Record against Sundowns

Amakhosi’s recent results against the Brazilians don’t paint the prettiest picture. A controversial 2-1 win for Masandawana extended their unbeaten streak against Chiefs to nine matches across all competitionsYou have to go back to April 2021 for Chiefs’ last win over Sundowns in any competition. Ironically, Uruguayan Gaston Sirino was a goal-scorer for Sundowns on that afternoon. Can he stick the knife into his former employers when the sides meet again? He’s returned from injury sooner than expected and got himself a goal against SuperSport which is a massive bonus for Nasreddine Nabi.

Pitso’s going to Iran

After having his Al Wahda contract ripped up after just 10 games, Pitso focused on family during Christmas 2023. He also discussed his short-term ambitions at the tail-end of what was an eventful year for Jingles. In 2024, he took up a short-term role with Abha Club in Saudi Arabia but they were relegated at the end of the 2023-2024 campaign. Now he’s got a new job!

Betway Premiership returns

Amakhosi will be brimming with confidence after their 4-0 drubbing of Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport. As fate would have it, the side meet again at the weekend in the league. Here are Chiefs’ next three Betway Prem clashes:

  • SuperSport United – Saturday, October 26, Lucas Moripe Stadium, 17:30
  • Magesi FC – Wednesday, October 30, Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, 19:30
  • Royal AM – Sunday, November 9 – FNB Stadium, 17:30

Will Chiefs get a deal for a few strikers over the line in January?
