Gaston Sirino explains why Kaizer Chiefs are winning again

Kaizer Chiefs winger Gaston Sirino is enjoying life at Naturena.

The 33-year-old has been the club’s best player this season, scoring twice and creating three assists in his four games. Having spent six years with Mamelodi Sundowns, Sirino was released end of June after struggling to break into Rulani Mokwena’s team.

At 33, some were sceptical if Gaston Sirino would fit in at Kaizer Chiefs, given that the club is rebuilding. It was evident from their first Betway Premiership match against Marumo Gallants that the Uruguayan forward would shine at Amakhosi.

He was once again influential on Saturday night as Chiefs thrashed SuperSport United 4-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in a Carling Knockout Cup last-16 clash. Speaking after the match, Sirino credited his coach Nasreddine Nabi.

“It’s a big responsibility to play for Kaizer Chiefs but I’m here to help the team,” he told SuperSport TV.

“I think also the change of mentality [under coach Nabi] has been important to all of us, because he changed the mentality to win every game.

“I think also the last game against Sundowns we needed to score a little more goals but it’s football.”

Under Nabi, Amakhosi have won three of their last four matches across all competitions this season and are looking like a team to beat. Last season, the club finished 10th on the log, losing 12 matches in the league.

Kaizer Chiefs appear to have turned the corner and with Gaston Sirino fit, the team can challenge for top honours this season.
