Khama Billiat’s return and could he re-join Kaizer Chiefs? Let’s find out via iDiski Times digital paper.
Billiat, one of South Africa’s most celebrated foreign footballers, made headlines throughout his career, from his debut with Ajax Cape Town in 2010 to his stints at Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. After contributing to Sundowns’ CAF Champions League triumph, high expectations surrounded his move to Chiefs in 2018. However, Billiat’s tenure at Naturena didn’t yield silverware, and after his contract expired in 2023, he chose to take a break. He recently returned to the field with Zimbabwean club Yadah FC, and also came back to the Zimbabwe national team after a three-years. Here, he shares his thoughts on his career choices.
On returning to Kaizer Chiefs
When asked about the possibility of returning to Chiefs, Billiat said, “You never know with football. I just wanted to focus on the league back home. We’re left with five games, and I’ll see how far I can go.” He emphasised the unpredictable nature of football and his desire to evaluate his performance before making any decisions.
Reflecting on his departure from Chiefs, Billiat explained, “As players, we go through a lot… negotiations take a toll. I didn’t feel comfortable having another contract. I needed to find myself.” He acknowledged the club’s support during his time there, saying, “Chiefs took care of me very well… I respect them so much.”
How Billiat view his time at Chiefs
Despite not winning a trophy, Billiat found value in his experience at Chiefs. “I enjoyed my time at Chiefs. They gave me an opportunity to play in the Champions League final… I thought I had some games that I really played even better than I used to.” He recognized the challenges of playing for a big team, where every match feels like a cup final.
Billiat discussed team dynamics during his time at Chiefs, agreeing with teammate Keagan Dolly that the squad lacked cohesion and quality. “We didn’t connect well… we needed to understand each other a little bit more.” He expressed respect for his teammates while acknowledging the need for improvement.
Thoughts on Themba Zwane and choices
When asked about Themba Zwane, Billiat praised his former teammate: “For me, he has been always the best… he makes other people around him look very good.” Billiat highlighted Zwane’s consistent performance, noting his ability to change games even when not starting.
Looking back on his illustrious career, Billiat asserted, “I never regret any move that I’ve ever made in my life. Every move was meant to be.” He enjoyed his time at Chiefs and acknowledged the recognition that came with playing for such a prestigious club.
Working under coach Pitso Mosimane
Billiat shared his experiences under coach Pitso Mosimane, who once sought to sign him for a year. “He’s a great coach, man… a great father. He shows how much he appreciates you.” He noted that while working with Mosimane was tough, the results speak for themselves.
