Tipping has always been an opinionated topic not only in South Africa but the world at large.
No doubt, everyone seems to have strong opinions when it comes to tipping culture. Some of the most asked questions include:

However, against the endless debates on tips, some customers pride themselves in leaving a generous tip while others tend to tip based on the services offered and satisfaction.
However, social media was abuzz after it was established that a customer in Stellenbosch had tipped a waiter R10 000.
The Thirsty Scarecrow confirmed the news on social media. The food joint posted on Facebook, “I just wanted to share this absolutely special moment.
“Our waiter Godwin received the most generous tip of R10 000! Moments like these remind us of the incredible connections we build with our guests.
“A huge thank you to the kind soul who made this possible in changing an individuals life today. Thank you Godwin for your hard work and dedication!”
However, against the news, Godwin’s boss had a lot of good things to say. Kelly Zetier posted, “His dedication, positive attitude, and ability to connect with our guests make him an invaluable part of our family.
“Godwin consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every customer has a memorable experience, and his warm, genuine nature is something that everyone appreciates.”
MAKING HEADLINES
Over the years, several customers have given generous tips that often trend on social media. Against the news The South African dives into some of the generous tips that made headlines.
However, in 2023, a waiter at a local joint was tipped R21 903 by a patron who had splurged over R182 000 on booze. The patron seemingly spent almost a quarter of a million in one night.
A few months ago, a customer tipped a waiter R11 450 after spending a whopping R114 500 at Rockets Club in Umhlanga Rocks.
However, the viral receipt showed that the customer splurged a huge chunk of his money on booze, which included:
- 1 Red Bull R58
- 1 BTL Tequila Don R16 000
- 6 Indian Toni R180
- 6 Ginger Ale R180
- 3 Aces Brut R42 000
- 3 Aces Demi R48 600
- 3 Veuve Clicqt Y R7500
