Daring 40m-high rescue on Chapman’s Peak – PHOTOS

More than 20 volunteers and professionals from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR), together with members of SAPS Search and Rescue, responded to Chapman’s Peak Drive as a multi-agency effort to rescue a 43-year-old woman on Sunday morning.

Rescuers and Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedics abseiled 40m down a steep slope to reach the woman.

She was assessed and treated before being placed into a rescue stretcher.

Working on Chapman’s Peak often challenging

Teams on the road used a rope hauling system, rigging ropes from the vehicles parked at the scene, to carefully raised the rescue team and stretchered patient back up to the road.

She was carried to a waiting ambulance and driven to hospital.

Working on Chapman’s Peak Drive is often challenging as the road is narrow, with limited space to operate.

Thanks go to the City of Cape Town traffic officials who assisted by carefully marshalling traffic past the scene on Sunday and keeping the rescuers safe.

The incident was concluded shortly after 11:00.
