The City of Cape Town sent out 1 000 Cape Town cops from the Public Safety Training College to hike Table Mountain on Friday, 25 October 2024. This set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of people hiking a mountain simultaneously.
Guinness World Record event
MayCo member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, joined the Cape Town cops hiking group called #Project1000. The event was part of the build-up to a busy holiday season expected in Cape Town over the December period. After climbing Table Mountain, they made their way down into Newlands Forest.
Apart from breaking the world record, Smith emphasised that the Cape Town Public Safety Training College is breaking another record by training more municipal peace officers than the rest of South Africa combined.
“We are all focusing on values most important if we are to build a police service that is respected and trusted. Values of integrity, honour, compassion. All values our college holds dear and has built our training around.”

Breaking previous record set by Iraq
The group Visit Kurdistan set the previous Guinness World Record of the biggest number of people hiking a mountain at the same time. The group consisted of 815 people. They set the record in Iraq last year on 11 March 2023. The participants’ aim was to create awareness about the nature and the mountains of Kurdistan to attract more visitors.
How does one apply to break a Guinness World Record?
There is some information that one needs to be familiar with before applying to break an existing Guinness World Record or set a new one. This includes knowing what makes a Guinness World Records title and reasons for rejected applications.
The next step is registering an account online to access the record database. The applicant can either navigate to an existing record that they want to break or apply for a new record title.
Thereafter, the applicant needs to complete and submit the application form. Applicants have the choice of requesting that their application is prioritised at a fee. This means that they will receive the necessary guidelines within five working days. If not choosing this option, a standard application procedure is followed. Applicants will then receive their guidelines up to 12 weeks or sometimes longer after submitting the application.
