Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Ronwen Williams has been named NINTH best goalkeeper in the world.
Williams was nominated for the Ballon d’Or’s Yachine Trophy which recognises the top goalkeepers across the globe.
He became the first African-based goalkeeper to be nominated for the Yachine Trophy, and only the fourth African ‘keeper to be recognised.
Now, Williams took a flight to France for the ceremony, but he didn’t make the top three only to finish ninth.
Aston Villa and Argentina No.1 Emiliano Martinez scooped the Yachine Trophy, and a section of football fans feel Williams was robbed.
This is the second successive year that Martinez wins the Yachine Trophy.
Consequently, he became the first goalkeeper to win the award twice in a row.
Martinez was followed closely by Unai Simon of Athletic Bilbao in second place while Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin came in third.
