Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane has explained how different coaches operated at Amakhosi during his time at the club.
The 42-year-old retired footballer spent eight years at Naturena winning two league titles. Yeye broke out at Jomo Cosmos before joining Kaizer Chiefs under Muhsin Ertugral in 2008. Speaking on SoccerBeat podcast, Letsholonyane said he enjoyed his time at Amakhosi under English coach Stuart Baxter.
“The three seasons under Stuart, we played on transition which literally is another language is counter-attack football. It stands out because we won two league titles,” he said.
“As much as the three(seasons) stand out, the world or the foundation was before that. The type of football we played under Stuart, was the type of football we prepared for under VV(Vladimir Vermezovic). If you saw the type of training we had under VV, you’d understand why we played like that.”
Yeye on working with different coaches at Kaizer Chiefs
The former Bafana Bafana explained that it was tough working under Serbian coach Vermezovic.
“It was a military-style type of training session. For some people, he was more of a strong guy who believed in more hard work… it was just wrong,” Yeye said.
He said the training sessions helped them to be in good shape physically when Baxter took over in 2012.
When Baxter came, he put good structures and order, Letsholonyane added.
At Cosmos, Yeye admitted he was more aggressive in the middle of the park.
“When I got to Chiefs(under Ertugral), it was more of a structured space. Had a technical and tactical coach who believed in those aspects of the game. I believed in duels, used to create 50/50 situations and even when I got to Chiefs, I still had that approach.” he said.
“Coach Muhsin repackaged my career on how to do certain things,” said the Kaizer Chiefs legend.
