Lion on the loose in Mpumalanga Province

On Wednesday, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) confirmed that a male lion escaped from its enclosure in Mbombela. Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant as efforts continue to locate the lion, last seen near The Rest Estate.

Lion’s Last Sighting Near the Rest Estate

MTPA spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube says the lion’s last sighting was recorded on Wednesday afternoon through security footage from The Rest Estate.

“This is confirmed by security footage obtained from The Rest Estate control room,” Shungube stated.

He explained that the MTPA team has been working tirelessly since early Wednesday morning to track the animal.

Search Operation Ongoing

Equipped with a thermal imaging drone, MTPA officials have been searching for the area since 2:00 on Wednesday but have yet to locate the lion. Shungube emphasised that the agency would continue its efforts until the animal was safely found.

“The MTPA has been on the scene since 2:00 (on Wednesday) with a thermal imaging drone trying to locate the lion, so far without success,” he noted.

Public Advised to Remain Calm and Report Sightings

Authorities advise residents to remain calm, stay alert, and report any sightings.

“The public is advised to remain calm, be vigilant, and alert the authorities if they see the lion,” Shungube added.

MTPA has provided a contact for immediate reporting and asks the public to call Louw Steryn at ‪083 6266 792‬ if they spot the lion.

Will this unusual sighting in Mbombela prompt authorities to review enclosure security measures?
