Rosh Hashanah, known as the “Jewish New Year”, is the first day of the Jewish calendar. This day commemorates the completion of creation by God, and specifically the sixth day, when human beings were created. This day is also called “Yam Teruah” meaning “the day of blowing the horn” because the horn (shofar) is sounded on this day. This day holds a deep religious significance, and is celebrated with great reverence and respect throughout the Jewish community.
Rosh Hashanah falls every year around September or October, and it is celebrated for two days. This year, Rosh Hashanah will begin at sunset on October 2, 2024 and will last until dusk on October 4, 2024. At this time, the Jewish community not only celebrates the beginning of the new year, but it is also a sacred time of introspection and repentance. This time is called “Yamim No’em” (Hebrew: ימים נוראים), which means “Days of Fear” or “Great Days”, and is a 10-day period that ends with Yom Kippur (Judaism’s Day of Atonement).
The day of Rosh Hashanah is a religious celebration that not only marks the arrival of the new year, but also provides an opportunity for introspection and self-purification. The day is especially meant for reflection on humanity’s origins and its purpose within God’s creation. It is a wonderful occasion to repent for one’s sins and mistakes, and to ask God for forgiveness and blessings.
On this day Jews perform religious rituals and prayers, most notably the Mussaf prayer, and the sounding of the shofar (horn) is also done in Jewish religious organizations. Shofar means following the ancient religious tradition of the Jews, which makes this day sacred and special.
10 days after Rosh Hashanah comes Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), which is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. This day is a day of atonement, introspection, and seeking forgiveness from God. On the day of Yom Kippur, Jews fast and ask God for forgiveness for their sins. It is a day when one has to do a complete introspection and try to correct their mistakes.
The message of Rosh Hashanah is—”There is always an opportunity for any person to improve themselves and make a new beginning for the future.” This day is not only a religious celebration, but it is also a time for self-building, peace, and achieving inner balance.
