The second day of Shardiya Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Brahmacharini, who is considered the goddess of penance and restraint. The second day of Sharadiya Navratri 2024 will be celebrated on October 4, which falls under the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. Sharadiya Navratri has great significance in Hinduism, as nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped during these days, which are considered a symbol of auspiciousness, happiness and peace in life.
Goddess Brahmacharini is considered the goddess of asceticism and detachment. Brahmacharini means “one who practices penance”. According to mythology, Goddess Parvati (reborn as Mata Sati) wanted to marry Lord Shiva, for which she performed rigorous penance. She performed extremely strict fasts and penance while observing celibacy and restraint. It is her power to follow this rigorous penance and penance that makes her famous as “Brahmacharini”. Her worship increases qualities like asceticism, sacrifice, virtue and restraint in a person’s life.
By worshipping Goddess Brahmacharini on the second day of Navratri, a person gets mental and spiritual peace. It is believed that worshipping Maa Brahmacharini brings happiness and peace in life, and at the same time brings auspiciousness in life. Especially those who want to get spiritual knowledge and come closer to God, should worship Goddess Brahmacharini. Her worship leads to asceticism, detachment, virtue, restraint, and spiritual strength, which takes life in a positive direction.
On the second day of Navratri, Maa Brahmacharini should be worshipped methodically. First of all, the place of worship is purified and prepared. The idol or picture of the mother is dressed in white clothes, as it symbolizes peace and purity. Flowers, especially jasmine or white flowers, are offered to the goddess during worship. Apart from this, she is offered sweets and sugar, which are considered to be her favorite. During the puja, lamps are lit and a grand aarti of the mother is performed, as the puja is considered incomplete without aarti.
The form of Maa Brahmacharini reflects the ascetic form of Parvati. When Mata Sati immolated herself in the yagya of Daksha Prajapati, she took birth as Parvati. Due to the desire to marry Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati performed rigorous penance. She gave up food and water for many years and consumed only fruits and leaves and later did penance by staying without food. Her penance was so rigorous that even the gods were surprised to see the power of her penance. Her penance pleased Lord Shiva and she got him as her husband.
This story teaches that to face difficulties and challenges in life, one should follow restraint and patience. By worshipping Mata Brahmacharini, we get inspiration to imbibe these qualities in our life.
