SIR Keir Starmer wants a new security deal with the EU to help nab Channel people smugglers.
The PM slammed our current post-Brexit agreement, saying we can’t access Euro intelligence on the gangs.
Speaking at the Interpol general assembly in Glasgow, he said UK investigators should be in charge of tackling gangs across Europe, but it hasn’t happened since we left the EU.
He told reporters: “I’m very keen to get the UK into a leadership position, particularly in relation to smuggling and putting people into small boats across the Channel.”
He added: “All of the European countries value what the UK has to offer.
“They know that we’ve very good intelligence.”
The PM opened the annual global policing conference calling for greater international cooperation and intelligence sharing.
He said: “People-smuggling should be viewed as a global security threat similar to terrorism.”
The PM added: “We’re working with Italy to dismantle supply chains of maritime equipment, combat illicit financial flows and strengthen investigative capacities and data sharing.”
A “bi-lateral co-operation treaty” is also in the pipeline with Germany.
A total of 9,400 people have been returned to their home countries since Labour took office — mainly to places deemed safe.

The museum says to expect “exceptional images that capture fascinating animal behaviour, spectacular species and the breathtaking diversity of the natural world”.
But it warned: “Visitors may find some images distressing due to animal cruelty and animal death.”
The exhibit, on loan from London’s Natural History Museum, opened last month.
Tory MP Sir Alec Shelbrooke fumed: “This is an example of lowering the education levels of society based on a decision made by a few woke people on inflated salaries deciding how everyone else should live their lives.
“I don’t understand why people going into an exhibition about the natural world need to be warned about the natural world.
“They are being wrapped up in cotton wool and it’s not preparing anyone for how the real world works.”
A contest spokesman said: “Some of the images can be confronting for visitors, so we understand why some of our touring partners may wish to communicate this.”

MARRIED At First Sight’s Sacha and Ross have baffled fans with their ongoing issue about where to move.
On Monday night’s episode, the home stay week continued with Sacha bringing Ross to Walsall to visit her family.
Ross and Sacha are divided over where to live[/caption]
Sacha admits she doesn’t want to live too far away from her family[/caption]
Sacha was determined to show him the highlights of the area in a bid to make him move there from Manchester.
However, Ross has reservations as his daughter, Blue, is currently living in Manchester and he didn’t want to be too far away from her.
With Sacha wanting to remain closer to her family, it seems the pair have hit a roadblock in making their relationship work.
However, this came as a bit of a shock to viewers – especially when they discovered that Walsall and Manchester is only about an hour-and-a-half drive down the motorway from each other.
As a result, some are accusing them of playing up the issue, wondering why they don’t move somewhere in the middle to make things work.
They also thought they were blowing the issue way out of proportion.
Speaking on X, one fan wrote: “For a bit of context, Walsall and Manchester are a 1 hr 40 mins drive apart – I drive 1 hr 20 mins (each way) to work, twice a week. It’s really not the dealbreaker they are making it out to be!”
“Being from the North of Scotland, I thought the distances Ross and Sacha were talking about were enormous!” said another,
“Then I googled it and realised Manchester and Walsall are a 1 hr 40 min drive apart! That is absolutely nothing!”
“Get a grip, it’s literally down the road… it’s not another country Sasha!!!” said a third.
A fourth joked: “Last time I looked Manchester was 90 mins from Walsall. Not 3 flights, a visitors visa and a malaria injection away.”
“For the love of God it’s like 70 miles from Manchester to Walsall. This is NOT A BIG DEAL,” said a fifth.
“Why don’t Ross and Sacha get a place in between Manchester and Walsall (like Stoke on Trent)?” noted another.
“Then they’d only be an hour from each place. That’s doable, no?”
The pair’s marriage hangs in the balance of the decision, with the final commitment ceremony coming up quickly.
A dinner with her friends resulted in Luke declaring himself “a single man” much to the anger of Amy.
Nathan and Lacey appear to be the only couple who could go the distance at this moment in time, with the pair getting closer by the day to the approval of Lacey’s mum.
Married At First Sight UK continues tomorrow at 9pm on E4.

A POSTCODE Lottery player who won more than £400,000 while her neighbours got just £6,000 says she has a “guardian angel”.
Retired antiques dealer Innis Gamble, of Fenham, Newcastle, scooped the largest share of the £3.2million prize.
She and husband Dave are now set on completing their bucket list – starting with trips to New York and Thailand.
Innis said: “The world has opened! I’m walking on air. I’m literally floating at the moment and Dave is holding me down, so I don’t float away.
“This money will change our lives forever. I really do feel like I have a guardian angel now.”
She celebrated after her postcode, NE4 9XU, was announced as the winner of October’s Postcode Millions prize on November 2.
And 390 of her neighbours shared the remainder of the multi-million-pound prize, each netting cash prizes ranging from £6,146 to £36,876, depending on the number of tickets they played with.
She won a substantial amount more by purching a lot more tickets – meaning a higher reward if she struck it lucky.
Innis, who was diagnosed with stage 4 skin cancer last year, couldn’t believe her windfall after already beating the odds as she recovers from melanoma, which was at an advanced stage.
She is waiting on the results of a third scan carried out just days ago – after two previous checks came back clear.
She said: “I’m grateful to be alive. It started with a freckle on my arm which changed shape, so I thought, ‘I’ve got to go to hospital and get it checked.’
“I had surgery to cut out the cancer from my arm but in October last year tests showed it had spread to my armpit, chest and stomach.”
Innis, who bears an S-shaped scar on her left arm, then started immunotherapy treatment for the cancer, which was successful.
She added: “Thankfully, it worked and I’m still here. I had my last scan last Saturday. I haven’t had the results back yet, but my last two scans have been clear.
“And now this has happened. I’m just waiting for the alarm clock to go off because it doesn’t sound real yet.”
Innis, who owned an antiques shop, had looked to the sky while she held her £402,919 cheque.
Later, the mum-of-two said: “Unfortunately, I’ve experienced a lot of loss, and I was simply thanking everybody.”
She also credits her husband Dave for saving her life after eight years of feeling lost following the passing of her previous husband.
Innis said: “My life’s been up and down for years, many years, and Dave has saved it.
“I lost my previous husband 15 years ago, and I was alone for eight years, and I couldn’t have been any lower until I met Dave on a dating website.”
How to enter the People's Postcode Lottery
The Postcode Lottery is a subscription-based lottery in which players sign up with their postcode.
Your postcode is your ticket number – 40p a day ensures entry into all drawers, or £12 a month.
Once subscribed, they are automatically entered into every draw.
Prizes are announced every day of the month.
If your postcode gets luck, every player in your postcode wins.
33 per cent of the ticket price will go to charity that is re-funnelled back into the community.
Innis, who married dad-of-one Dave in New York’s Central Park in 2016, added: “It was meant to be. We are going to enjoy this.”
Dave, who works as a complementary therapist, said they wrote a bucket list together and now plan to start ticking it off.
He said: “It’s perfect timing when you get to our age. You build up a little bucket list, and we wrote one together. It can all happen now.
“We got married at Wagner Cove in Central Park and it was the best day ever and we’d love to go back.
“We stayed on Seventh Avenue in a honeymoon suite on the 73rd floor with balconies and its own kitchen. We might even see if we can stay there again.”
Innis, who reminisced about taking a horse and carriage ride on their wedding day, added: “We’ve got to go back to take the horse a carrot. We forgot the carrot the first time round.”
Innis and Dave also plan on taking a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to Thailand, but before then Innis plans on writing a book about her life.
Innis, who ran her antiques shop in Norton called Yesterdays with her late husband, said that much like antiques, her life consists of lots of stories.
Adopted at birth, Innis found her birth mum, brother and sister 52 years later and said she’s always wanted to tell her story.
She said: “I think I’m entitled to write a book.”
The couple both care for Dave’s mum, Marcella Cook, who turned 102 on 2 September, and plan on celebrating together with a bag of chips.
17 hours agoNewsComments Off on How Ruud van Nistelrooy’s ‘donut solution’ starts Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd revamp early with signs of improvement already
MANCHESTER UNITED were out with the old and in with the Ruud in their first Premier League game since the sacking of Erik ten Hag.
Ruud van Nistelrooy made some tactical changes suitable for Ruben Amorim[/caption]
Rasmus Hojlund had a combative new role[/caption]
While Enzo Marseca made a baffling tactical change[/caption]
And a cagey first half between the team’s of the old Malaga team-mate’s, Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Rasmus Hojlund was brought down in the area by Robert Sanchez.
However, moments later Moises Caicedo sensationally volleyed home an equaliser, which ended up being decisive.
Maresca’s Chelsea are far from the finished product, while United have Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim coming in to take charge from November 11.
But what did Sunday’s Old Trafford clash show for two two sides going forward? SunSport’s tactics guru Dean Scoggins broke down all the tactics and tricks in the latest episode of Tactics Exposed…
1. Ruud new set up is practice for new boss… but playing out still a big issue
Van Nistelrooy has clearly been doing his homework on Amorim’s Sporting side.
On paper, United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 or even 4-4-2 shape at times, but realistically what they did was move to 3-4-3 in possession, and that is Amorim’s formation.
So Van Nistelrooy, maybe in a little audition to say, ‘I know what you’re going to do, Ruben’.
So Dalot, who has been the wingback or the fullback or even inverting as a fullback a lot of times for United, he effectively played as a right centre-back in the first half.
He barely got forward, barely crossed the halfway line, took a couple of throws, got forward for a couple of corners. But that was about it.
And in a defensive set-up, when they turned the ball over, it was Dalot playing as the right centre-back.
Matthijs De Ligt was the centre-back and Lisandro Martinez was on the left side. So there was a clear three there straight away.
Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui was on the left and Alejandro Garnacho came in on that right-hand side and played as a nominal wingback in a 3-4-3, which we saw four or five times in the first half.
Van Nistelrooy was quite brave and Garnacho played on that right-hand side, which meant that Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are then the two playing off of Hojlund.
I found it quite encouraging for United that after months and years of Ten Hag and not seeing anything, that in a week, Van Nistelrooy was able to implement something that will start off the Amorim era.
He said at the start of the game, almost with a grin, ‘I haven’t spoken to Amorim, there’s been no contact.’
I don’t believe him because it really, really was like, ‘Here you go, mate, I want to be your No 2.’
2. Midfield two starting to address the ‘donut’ in midfield
This game also saw United playing with a solid two in midfield in Casmeiro and Manuel Ugarte.
Previously United seemed to be playing with a donut in their midfield that left acres of space, like in the Liverpool and Tottenham games, where they are caught pressing upfield but the defence are not committed enough to come forward leaving this big open hole in the middle.
It must have huge part of training in the week for United because we’ve seen before the Chelsea box midfield.
So with the inversion of the fullback, they have four players in there.
And what it meant was Casemiro and Ugarte had a really, really big job to do. And Ugarte, we’ve only seen him play well in fits and starts so far.
But I thought there was a little bit where he showed for the first time what they’ve bought.
He was combative and gave away lots of fouls. We’re going to expect to see more and more of that.
But Casemiro and him in the absence of Kobbie Mainoo played as a two. A proper two. They weren’t ahead of each other, behind each other most of the time.
You’d see them either side of the centre circle. You saw them screening in front of the back four, back three at times. Getting up, up to support, but as a two.
And it’s so important, especially against teams like Chelsea. And it was clearly drilled, showing how that 3-4-3 Amorim formation might look when they play a two-man midfield.
They will play a two in there. And, you know, at times the guys up front and the number 10s will come back in to support them.
And other times a fullback or a wingback will move infield to help them. But it will be a two. And this was the first pointer to that.
Fernandes gets a lot of criticism at times where he does other people’s jobs for them. I don’t think we can criticise United over the last few weeks for not running.
They are running. They’re just a bit erratic. And this was much more organised.
Fernandes, communication-wise, worked very hard with that midfield to make sure they were working as a unit.
They didn’t get overrun by a very impressive Chelsea midfield. You know, Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer and then whoever was inverting and they didn’t get overrun.
So there was an improvement there. Definitely.
3. United still struggle playing out from the back
However, United struggled to find a consistent method of playing out against Chelsea.
It will be a style they seek to play under Amorim.
He uses the two midfield players and the two centre-backs to bounce passes in and out to the goalkeeper.
And then he expects the goalkeeper or one of the two centre-backs to then find the number tens. It’s direct.
Was there an improvement yesterday? No, absolutely not. But there was an improvement in their positions.
They did this interesting thing where De Ligt went to the right and Dalot came inside to come and receive the ball, but they didn’t pass it to him. So they’re confused in what they’re trying to do.
Gary Neville correctly mentioned on commentary that playing out should be second nature, they should be doing it without thinking.
If I’m getting pressed from the left, I’m going into midfield and he’s going to bounce it right. They should be drilling it time and time again on the training ground. And they’re just not showing it.
Andre Onana is good with his feet and they will get better with it under Amorim, but it was confusing against Chelsea.
Onana nearly gifted it to Nicolas Jackson when they nicked it was a Chelsea trap.
But in the picture you can see that De Ligt was not close enough to Onana to be passed to. Everybody’s got a role in there. It’s not very complicated.
It’s just like if you’re playing a move through midfield, it’s patterns of play. You know, and we practice it all the way through youth levels. Teams will practice it right from the way everyone will do it.
That’s where Leny Yoro can come in. We’ve not seen him yet. And he will be the right centre-back instead of Dalot in that setup, I think. Then De Ligt in the middle so that will make a difference.
Mazraoui, I thought, had a really good game yesterday. Clearly, he could be either one of the two wingbacks.
We might see more involvement from Harry Maguire, and hopefully they get Luke Shaw back fit as well, because he can do this. We’ve seen him do it in an England shirt.
So there are players there who can do it. But for me, it’s drilling it. It’s gaining confidence in doing it time and time again, repetition. And then it will happen.
4. All action Hojlund – but with more in the box he could be golden
Everyone has been talking about Viktor Gyokeres in the last week despite Man Utd not having the money to spend.
But Hojlund, who they have already spent a lot of money on, showed some really good signs playing as a proper No 9 as they went direct into him.
He wasn’t drifting into channels which is almost an excuse not to have the ball into feet, he’s had a week with Van Nistelrooy and he’s playing combatively.
I’m a big advocate for selfless runners, but the No10’s are the runners in this formation, meaning he has to be the target and he was.
He didn’t have enough touches in the box, but he did win a penalty after his only touch in there, showing they have to get him in the box.
Hojlund drew fouls in the centre of the field, he got them out when they were under a bit of pressure because he won a free kick and he had a good ding-dong with Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.
For the penalty incident, he actually goes head-to-head with Caicedo outside of the area and then sells Chelsea with a lovely little peel-off run over the back.
And if he’s going to contact people in front of the goal and then go round the back for another touch, he’s got a bit about him.
I think we’re going to see a lot more from Hojlund under Amorim, given there are certainly similarities between him and Gyokeres in stature and pace.
Man Utd aren’t giving him enough chances to score, but that might change with Amorim.
However, we saw in the game that it is a system that doesn’t suit Rashford.
It worked better with Fernandes but the creativity comes from the two players off the frontman, I think Hojlund has a place there, but for me Rashford was terrible against Chelsea.
It wasn’t down to a lack of effort, but rather confusion over the system and where they wanted him to play.
He doesn’t want the ball to feet or on the turn, he wants it in behind so I do feel a bit sorry for him from that perspective.
But there was a moment in the second half where Marc Cucurella peeled off the back of him who was the left back inverting.
It’s his man, and Rashford starts to sprint and then lets him go, a bit like Dalot in the Tottenham game, and he was very lucky that Chelsea didn’t score from that incident.
A couple of times he chased back quite hard in the first half. But that was really because he’d given the ball away in the first place going the other way. He looks confused. He’s 27 years old now.
He’s not the not the superstar kid anymore. He should be one of the leaders at Man United. And I feel he’s in real danger of being the sacrifice.
I mean, I’ve seen more movement from a lamp post in a storm, to be honest.
Given his salary you could see Man Utd selling him, but he’s a Man Utd boy and Amorim is very tactically flexible. He will play a 3-4-3, but it will be flexible.
So against teams who play with a higher line, you know, there is a role for Rashford.
But does he want and is he going to be willing to be a bit part player and not a starter in that 11? As it stands at the moment, he’s nowhere near it.
5. Enzo Maresca’s baffling Cole Palmer decision
We were very impressed by the way that Chelsea have started and setting up and the tactical changes Maresca has made against the likes of Liverpool.
We previously showed a heat map of Palmer and where he’s getting all his joy, and that’s inside right, a bit narrower as a No 10 this year than he was under Pochettino, which was more from the right hand side.
And then yesterday, it was as if Marseca thought ‘I know, I’ll move Palmer into a different position.’
Palmer is probably best player in the Premier League at the moment And Maresca started with Malo Gusto as the right back and Reece James as the left back, which meant that he inverted.
Gusto and James played more of the time as part of the back three when they were in possession.
Gusto has been playing as a left-back at times as well and they’ve moved it the other way. But Palmer should be the one who’s the right sided No 10.
And what was happening was that’s where Gusto was playing and Palmer was the inside left 10.
And he a few times got into this position on his left foot where De Ligt did very well as a defender to sort of push him wide and block off his shot.
But you know full well from the other side, it would have been a little feint and a ball and then a bend for the back post. And it just stifled him a little bit and they changed it in the second half.
You know, they brought Cucurella on, took Gusto off, and switched it back to where it should have been.
And the game became a bit erratic and a bit confused with United’s formation going a bit all over the place in the second half as well.
It was a bit un-Palmer-like and it’s early days to be saying that, but we’ve come to expect such high standards and he was a little bit anonymous.
For me, the golden rule, just play your best player where your best player should be playing.
So if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Chelsea player ratings vs Man Utd
CHELSEA came from a goal down to rescue a point at Old Trafford.
Robert Sanchez brought down Rasmus Hojlund with 20 minutes remaining and Bruno Fernandes rolled in what looked to be a decisive spot kick.
But Chelsea hit back swiftly as Moises Caicedo’s sweet strike flew into the bottom corner.
Here is how SunSport’s Lloyd Canfield saw the performances of the Chelsea players in the 1-1 draw…
Robert Sanchez – 3 Made a few really good saves in the first half, and was much improved after a poor performance last time out against Newcastle.
That was until he gave away a reckless penalty on Rasmus Hojlund, which was easily dispatched by Bruno Fernandes.
His mistakes are starting to cost Chelsea time after time.
Malo Gusto – 2 Got in good positions in the first half, but was often wasteful when he got there.
Was booked for a late challenge on Manuel Ugarte, before being hooked for Cucurella at half-time after an awful overall showing.
Wesley Fofana – 6 A strong performance at the back was marred only by the Frenchman letting Rasmus Hojlund escape him before winning a penalty for his side.
Showed brilliant recovery pace throughout the game, and made some crucial challenges too.
Levi Colwill – 6 That was a strong defensive showing from the Chelsea number 6.
For a player with a passing range as impressive as his is, it would’ve been nice to see him use it more as Chelsea looked for a goal.
Reece James – 5 Improved this week, but still showed signs of rustiness as he gave the ball away in dangerous positions a few times.
More effective on the right side in Malo Gusto’s position, and more comfortable there as expected with Marc Cucurella on the left.
Another 90 minutes in the tank is fantastic news for Chelsea fans.
Moises Caicedo – 9 Scored a certain contender for goal of the month with a sensational volley from the edge of the box to level the scoring for his side.
Effective in breaking up play for the Blues once more, and showed why he is worthy of the £100m price tag Chelsea paid for him.
Romeo Lavia – 8 Another impressive midfield performance from the Belgian, who shows prowess beyond his years on and off the ball.
Seems the perfect pivot partner for Moises Caicedo, and people need to start talking about how Manchester City let him go for peanuts.
Noni Madueke – 6 Unfortunate to hit the post in the 13th minute with a header following a corner.
Worked hard defensively throughout the game too, but was unable to really put his creative abilities to the test.
Cole Palmer – 7 In the first half, his signature ‘Palmer touch’ got the away supporters off their feet, and he was Chelsea’s most creative outlet on the day.
Unable to add another goal or assist to his impressive tally this season, but still had a solid showing.
Pedro Neto – 5 Showed flashes of brilliance on the left-hand side, and came close with a shot across goal in the second half.
Was moved to the right-hand side in the second half, but it was much of the same from there.
Nicolas Jackson – 5 Pretty invisible up front for Chelsea today.
Worked hard and tracked back well when required to, but fans were left confused as to why Christopher Nkunku was left on the bench.
In fairness to him, could’ve had an assist if Enzo Fernandez could finish his dinner.
Subs Marc Cucurella (for Gusto, 46 mins) – 5 A solid showing on the left-hand side. Chelsea look a better team with him in the 11.
Mykhailo Mudryk (for Madueke, 70 mins) – 4 Tried to light things up on the left hand side, but his spark wasn’t enough to win the game for his side.
Enzo Fernandez (for Lavia, 70 mins) – 2 Missed an absolute sitter which would have won his team the game after coming on. Looks very short on confidence.
MARTIN BLACKBURN gives his verdict on the Red Devils against Chelsea
Andre Onana – 5 Will be disappointed not to keep out Caicedo’s equaliser.
Almost put Casemiro in trouble with sloppy early pass too
Noussair Mazraoui – 6 Key interception to prevent Neto getting in on goal late on and tried to support Garnacho where possible
Matthijs de Ligt – 6 Good early block to deny Palmer.
Late slip under pressure from Jackson almost proved costly.
Lisandro Martinez – 6 Lucky not to concede a pen with clumsy challenge on Colwill and lucky to escape a red for x-rated late tackle on Palmer.
Diogo Dalot – 6 Poor tackle on Pedro Neto earned a deserved booking and had a real battle with his international team-mate.
Casemiro – 7 Made a difference with super ball to Hojlund in lead up to pen – but could he have got more distance on clearing header that was despatched by Moises Caicedo.
Manuel Ugarte – 6 Rugby tackle on Palmer but Uruguayan showed signs he is starting to settle in after big money summer move.
Alejandro Garnacho – 6 Always a threat but wasted some great chances.
Shot straight at Sanchez and shanked another effort after great work by Fernandes.
Bruno Fernandes – 8 Created United’s best two chances for Rashford and Garnacho and then kept his cool to score from the spot.
Marcus Rashford – 6 Hit the angle with volley on stroke of half-time and saw another shot saved by Sanchez.
Better from the England man.
Rasmus Hojlund – 6 Did not touch the ball in the Chelsea box first half but when he finally did he won the penalty.
Subs Amad Diallo (73′ for Rashford) A couple of nice touches but not much impact.
Joshua Zirkzee (’84 for Hojlund) A couple of nice touches but not much impact.
Victor Lindelof (’84 for Ugarte) Thrown on to keep things tight and did that.

FOR decades, Sarah Smith suffered with depression.
But now, due to a futuristic-looking headset that zapped electronic pulses deep into her brain, her fog has lifted.
Sarah Smith claims the Flow headset has transformed her life for the better[/caption]
Brits are using electric brain stimulation at home to improve their depression[/caption]
She tells Sun Health: “It’s like seeing the world in colour for the first time in over 20 years.”
Sarah had been using the Flow Neuroscience Headset for just five days when she felt the benefits.
The 48-year-old call centre worker from The Wirral, Merseyside says: “I’m a completely different person.
“My partner tells me he can finally see the sparkle in my eyes.
“I told him it’s probably just the electricity.”
In fact electricity, in the form of electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, has been used to treat depression since the 1930s, with mixed success.
Many still see it as outdated and barbaric, conjuring up images of dark, ominous corridors in grim asylums.
But ECT is still given today to a small number of patients who have severe, treatment- resistant depression.
Now Flow, a new kind of electrical brain stimulation, can be used at home.
It uses transcranial direct current stimulation, a technique which has been developed over 20 years.
Clinical trial
The device sends a weak electrical current through electrodes on the forehead.
This targets a part of the brain linked to positive mood, focus, decision-making and emotion regulation, and where inactivity is linked to depression, though is not necessarily a root cause.
Many factors are thought to influence risk of depression, including circumstances and genetic risk.
Studies are looking at whether tDCS can benefit other mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders . . . and heartbreak.
Sarah claims it works better than her antidepressants, and her enthusiasm has been echoed by reality TV’s Gemma Collins.
In an Instagram advert in May 2023 after using it for one week, she told her 2.2million followers: “This has been a game changer for me.”

The £400 gadget is available on the NHS in just three regions of England[/caption]
Gemma, 43, claimed the £400 device worked “faster and better” than antidepressants, the side effects of which can include loss of appetite and libido, nausea and other digestive problems.
Just weeks later, the results from a clinical trial testing the Flow device were published in the medical journal Nature.
King’s College London scientists said that 44.9 per cent of patients went into remission — meaning they were no longer considered depressed — within ten weeks of using the headset, compared to 21.8 per cent of patients in the control group who used an inactive headset.
My outlook on life became so much clearer, it was like a black cloud that had been hanging over me for years had been lifted.

The 174 depressed adults, of which nearly two-thirds were on antidepressants, were given the device to use at home under video supervision.
Study author Professor Cynthia Fu said: “The study showed these headsets have potential to be a first-line treatment for people with depression, or alongside other treatments.”
Sarah is among the 30,000 or so Europeans using one and says: “It’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent.
“It’s expensive, but I was spending so much on antidepressant prescriptions, which over the years really adds up.”
Flow is being offered through some NHS services in West London, Northants and Leicestershire.
Sarah was diagnosed with depression at 26, having begun struggling five years earlier when she gave birth to her daughter.
She recalls: “I was so sad all the time.
“I would just tell myself to get it together and would just pretend I was happy until I almost convinced myself I was.
“Antidepressants did help, but they stopped me feeling things.”
Up to 60 per cent of people on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors — the most common depression treatment — say they experience the side effect of emotional “blunting”, in which the happy emotions are as stunted as the unhappy ones.
Over the next 24 years, Sarah found herself trapped in a cycle of feeling low, starting antidepressants and coming off them, admitting it was hard for her to be the mum she wanted to be.
Things changed in 2022 when she saw the Flow headset featured on Good Morning Britain.
By day four or five, I suddenly felt alive
Sarah Smith
She decided to try it and after a few days of wearing the device daily for 30 minutes, she says her symptoms noticeably improved.
She adds: “At first, it was a bit painful — the zaps felt like nettle stings — but by day four or five, I suddenly felt alive.
“My outlook on life became so much clearer, it was like a black cloud that had been hanging over me for years had been lifted.”
‘Exciting results’
As she continued using the headset, she slowly reduced her antidepressants, under her doctor’s supervision.
Sarah’s experience mirrors that of patients on the new trial, and Professor Fu says: “Participants really liked the headsets.
“They found them very easy, liked how they could use them from home and generally the response was very positive.”
Sarah now claims to be “thriving as a human” and adds: “I’m out and about all the time, making plans with friends and paddle-boarding with my partner Andrew, and I finally feel like myself again.”
Urging caution, Dr Rachel Ward, a GP at Woodlands Medical Centre in Didcot, Oxon, advises patients not to rush into stopping their antidepressants.
She says: “No drugs have a 100 per cent success rate and antidepressants are no different.
“Though the [new] research is early and the study is small, I think the results are exciting.
“Though this is promising research it is not yet recommended by the NHS.
“Please do not stop taking antidepressants without discussing with your GP.”
Sarah uses the headset occasionally when she senses her mood starting to dip.
Flow recommends using it for up to a year to prevent a relapse, though most benefits are felt within the first ten weeks.

“Thank you for being the best teacher. Nothing but love from all of the Gill family.”
He then went on to share on his own Instagram story: “Heartbroken for you right now [Amy], but like a phoenix you will rise. Isaiah 40:31.”
Earlier today, a spokesperson for the BBC dance contest confirmed that Amy would be replaced by Lauren Oakley who had filled in for her over the weekend.
They said: “Sadly, Amy Dowden MBE will not be partaking in the rest of the competition this year.
“Whilst Amy focuses on her recovery following a foot injury, fellow Professional Dancer, Lauren Oakley, will step in as JB’s dance partner.
“The health and wellbeing of everyone involved in Strictly are always the utmost priority. The whole Strictly family sends Amy love and well wishes.”
Speaking for the first time on being forced to leave the show via Instagram earlier today, Amy said: “My heart is breaking right now. The past few months I finally felt like me again.
“Cancer was no longer the first thing I thought of when I woke up. It was choreography, music choices, which dances in which order, what we needed to work on. I felt free again.
“My goal since hearing those words you have cancer was to get back on the Strictly dance floor. It’s been such a challenge to get back, one I devoted 2024 too.”
She went on to add: “My heart right now is breaking having to pull out of the competition due to a foot injury and I know only too well ‘this too shall pass’ and I’ll be soon better and back dancing.
“Something I’ve had to get used to in my life. I’m sure at some point we will dance again JB.”
Her most recent foot injury comes after her fractured foot last November, which occurred whilst rehearsing a dance at home, three days after she finished cancer treatment.

A BRIT man who had gone missing while holidaying in Tenerife has finally been found.
Kris Finney from Lancashire flew to the Spanish island last Thursday to meet a pal, but was reported missing after not being heard from for four days.
Kris Finner has finally been found[/caption]
Kris Finney went missing while on a trip to Tenerife[/caption]
He was found on Monday by a local shopkeeper who helped him after he was left with no money and a shattered phone.
His aunt Debbie Kenyon told The BBC: “We are so relieved. We were sick with worry.
“He told me his phone had broken and he had no money or way of getting in touch with us.”
Aunt Debbie said Kris was set to be away for a week and flew to the island on Thursday morning, arriving on Thursday afternoon.
He contacted his mum to confirm he arrived at the holiday hotspot but said he was running out of phone battery, according to the Manchester Evening News.
But the electrician failed to meet up with the pal.
It is understood the young Brit was staying at Casa Natalia, in the Armeñime area of western Tenerife.
Photos of Kris and details of his last known whereabouts had been shared on the Missing Persons Tenerife group on Facebook.
An FCDO Spokesperson previously said: “We are supporting the family of a British Man reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
The man’s disappearance echoes the case of Jay Slater which made headlines across the world this summer after the teen went missing on the island.
The young Brit had left an Airbnb in the remote village of Masca hours after travelling there with two men he’d met at a music festival.
Authorities and volunteers conducted a massive search on the island with drones, dogs and a helicopter, for nearly a month.
