Top 10 most fuel efficient cars of 2024 which could save you £100s at the pump – from bargain Prius to luxe Mercedes

A GROUP of car experts have revealed the most fuel efficient cars drivers can buy in 2024 – including a very luxurious Mercedes.

Petrolheads at Cinch have picked out their 10 best motors with the best miles per gallon ratings.

A group of car experts have picked out the most fuel efficient motors of 2024[/caption]

In this instance, they’ve heaped together petrol and hybrid cars, seeing as they are the types of cars Brits prefer the most.

BMW 330e

The BMW 330e backs plenty of punch thanks to its hybrid power[/caption]

The stylish 330e features a 2.0-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor – giving this very economical hybrid some serious power, too.

Better yet, the 330e boasts a typically refined interior filled with top-of-the-range tech.

Cinch said: “The 330e plug-in hybrid is the BMW 3 Series that tends to get all the attention, thanks to its ability to run on pure-electric power for around 30 miles and return well over 100 miles to the gallon (on paper).”

Toyota Prius

The everlong Prius returned to the UK earlier this year[/caption]

The Prius returned to the UK in the spring with the release of the third-gen Prius Plug-in – which offers an official economy of 235.4mpg.

What’s more, the plug-in version can run on electric-only power over short distances.

Toyota also offers a self-charging version which doesn’t use a plug and is generally cheaper on the used car market.

Cinch said: “When you take a taxi, there’s a good chance it will be a Toyota Prius. There are good reasons for that – the Prius is extremely reliable and cheap to run.”

Suzuki Swift

The much-loved supermini uses the brand’s ‘Boosterjet’ tech[/caption]

Many petrolheads were dismayed to learn in the middle of 2024 that the hot hatch Suzuki Swift Sport was coming to the end of its lifecycle.

However, the regular Swift is still very much alive and kicking as the eco supermini that’s become a firm favourite among Brits.

The current version of the Swift uses the brand’s ‘Boosterjet’ tech, which comprises a mild hybrid setup.

That means the electric motor takes some of the strain off the petrol engine, and also allows for better economy over a standard petrol engine.

Toyota Corolla Touring Sports

The Touring Sports version of the Corolla combines estate practicality with fuel economy[/caption]

The Corolla has been a staple on UK roads for years, having been on sale here on and off since 1976.

Classed as a hatchback counterpart to the long-since discontinued Crown, it offers a mixture of luxury and good looks for an affordable price.

Having disappeared from the UK for a few years, it’s now back with the addition of hybrid power.

It isn’t just a hatchback anymore either, with the Touring Sports naturally being a fast estate – with a choice of two petrol-hybrid engines – 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre – offering up to 63.8mpg.

Hyundai Ioniq

The Ioniq range combines the best of lower fuel bills and cheaper insurance[/caption]

Hyundai’s Ioniq, much like the Prius, comes as both a self-charging hybrid and a plug-in – but Cinch says the plug-in is better value as a used car.

With its 1.6-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor, it can reach up to 39 miles on a single charge.

Cinch added: “It’s not just the lower fuel bills; the car will also feature cheaper insurance and maintenance bills.”

How about a plug-in hybrid diesel?

The E300 de boasts a pretty incredible official economy figure with the best mileage available – providing the battery is topped up.

Once fully charged, Mercedes say drivers can get 33 miles of electric-only range.

The 208 diesel hybrid is a great looking supermini with a great mpg record.

The five-door hatch features a 1.5-litre diesel engine that’ll return more than 70mpg, while inside it’s typically stylish with a particularly slick dashboard.

Much like the 208, the Corsa (EV version pictured) is widely popular supermini in the UK[/caption]

Not only is the Corsa one of the UK’s cheapest EVs, but it’s also one of the more fuel-efficient diesel hybrids.

Similar underneath to the 208, the Corsa Turbo D boasts 70.6mpg – not far off from its Peugeot brother.

Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI SE

For decades, the Octavia has been the ultimate family motor

The ultimate family motor, the Octavia has been a long-time favourite for Brits – not least because of its huge boot and, naturally, excellent fuel economy.

On the 2.0-litre TDI, Cinch said: “You get incredible fuel economy and class-leading reliability, all at a price that doesn’t worry your bank account too much. “

For 50 years the Golf has been a stalwart on British roads[/caption]

The evergreen Golf celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and it still remains a great choice for the likes of first-time drivers and families.

The latest generation Golf – the Mk8 – has the same 150hp diesel engine and six-speed manual gearbox as the aforementioned Octavia.

As is expected with VW, the motor is very refined inside, and all for a decent price.

VW recently revealed a special edition hot hatchback that’s inspired by a legendary model from 1990s.

The stunning motor even comes with a unique colour finish that pays further homage to its heritage.

Elsewhere, Porsche has recalled 200 cars after discovering a “manufacturing defect” that could cause the wheels to fall off while driving.

The firm has issued a notice on three of its most popular models, including the iconic 911.

Central Cee rakes in a huge £7m and his debut album isn’t even out yet

BRIT rap sensation Central Cee is sitting on a gold mine and he hasn’t even released his debut album yet.

The 26-year-old rapper, real name Oakley Caesar-Su, has already built up a £7m fortune, which looks set to significantly grow next year when his record Can’t Rush Greatness is released.

The rapper’s track Sprinter spent 10 weeks on the top of the UK chart[/caption]

In documents filed to Companies House earlier this year, Cee’s CC4L Ltd showed £5,500,00 in profit and loss reserves, with the music star the business‘s sole director.

That same month Been Tour LLP showed it had £1,757,000 in cash at bank and in hand, with Cee once again the sole name associated with the business.

And the money-making performer looks set to expand his business empire after setting up DRP Yours Ltd, a new clothing brand, in September.

Cee has become a phenomenon with eight top 40 singles, a number one in Sprinter – his track with rapper Dave that held onto the top spot for 10 weeks, and a raft of other tracks that have cracked the Top 40.

His biggest hit this year was his summer single BAND4BAND with US rapper Lil Baby, which peaked at number four.

And he holds the distinction of being the first Brit rapper to rack up more than 2 billion streams on Spotify.

While his debut album proper is coming out in January, Cee has released two mixtapes to date.

His first, Wild West, reached number two in the charts in 2021 and his second, 23, topped the charts two years later.

Though he’s achieved huge fame and riches, teetotal Cee is an introvert who likes nothing better than to unwind indoors by himself.

In a recent interview with Dazed, he explained: “I don’t play games, I don’t watch TV, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t go out.

“I’m just on my phone, my screen time is too high. I’m just scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. I spend time on Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok.”

Earlier this year Cee was linked romantically to US star and Taylor Swift’s pal Ice Spice following his split from Madeline Argy.

The pair collaborated on summer track Did It First, though anything romantic has never been confirmed.

Hull star Oscar Zambrano BANNED after breaching anti-doping rules as club release statement

HULL CITY star Oscar Zambrano has been banned from football for breaching anti-doping rules.

The Ecuadorian midfielder, 20, is currently on loan at the KCOM Stadium from LDU Quito.

However, he was slapped with an immediate suspension on Tuesday.

Hull confirmed the shock news in a statement.

The club said: “Hull City can confirm that, with immediate effect, CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, has suspended Oscar Zambrano for breaching the anti-doping rules set out in Articles 6 and 7 of the CONMEBOL Anti-Doping Regulations.

“Zambrano and his defence will use their right to appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“The Club is not in a position to provide further information at this time.”

Zambrano came through the academy at Colorados Jaipadida – the same youth team as Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo.

But it was at LDU Quito where he made his name, progressing into the first team with the Ecuadorian giants.

The youngster had a trial with Ajax and was also wanted by Sao Paulo as well as Colorado Rapids.

However, he joined Hull on a season-long loan in August for the 2024-25 season.

Zambrano grabbed his first goal and assist for the club in the 4-1 win over Cardiff on September 28.

The shock news means he will be unavailable for Tim Walter’s Tigers when they take on Oxford United tonight.

Man City’s title bid is being derailed by the loss of Pep Guardiola’s secret weapon he feared it was a ‘mistake’ to sell

MANCHESTER City’s title bid is being derailed by the absence of a key player from last season.

And we’re not talking about injured midfield lynchpin and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.

Julian Alvarez was a key figure in Manchester City winning their fourth title in a row[/caption] julian alvarez is a manchester city soccer player

Because although the Spain midfielder was undeniably crucial to the triumphs of his club and country, Julian Alvarez was front and centre (and sometimes wide) in Pep Guardiola’s side in 2023/4.

And selling Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for a massive profit in the summer is no longer looking like quite as good a deal for City.

It was not only the Argentinian World Cup winner’s 11 goals and nine assists in 36 PL appearances that was important to City.

Nor was Alvarez just a useful replacement for Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne when they were injured.

The versatile star also gave Guardiola the freedom to rotate his attacking options during or between games, keeping them out of the “red” zone and giving them the chance to perform at their peak more often.

But Alvarez wanted to be the main man, playing regularly in a No 10 or No 9 role. That was not going to happen any time soon, so when Atletico offered him the chance to swap Manchester, where he had never really settled, for Madrid, he wanted the move.

And City regarded as good business a fee of up to £81.5m for a wantaway player who cost an initial £14m in 2022.

Yet Guardiola knew at the time that the sale of Alvarez could come back to bite his team, admitting “if we have many, many injuries it will be a problem”.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

Guardiola added: “Maybe it is a mistake, I don’t know, but I don’t like leaving players without playing for a long time.

“When everyone is involved with a chance to play, the performance of the teams is always better.”

Unfortunately for City, they have a lot of players without a chance to play at the moment.

On the flipside, title rivals Arsenal are also feeling the effects of losing key players.

And the Gunners are more dependent on their starting 11 than City and so less equipped to cope with injuries.

Last season, four of Mikel Arteta’s squad played more than 3,000 minutes in the Premier League – William Saliba, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Magalhaes.

a list of the most minutes played for arsenal in pl a list of the most minutes played for man city in pl

Not a single City player did the same, with Rodri’s 2,937 league minutes putting him top of their workload charts but also behind Ben White (2,995) and only just ahead of Bukayo Saka (2,933).

Phil Foden, second in the City rankings with 2,865, would have been eighth in the Arsenal list.

The Gunners are undoubtedly suffering from the loss of injured captain Odegaard, whose skillset would be difficult for anyone to replace.

But a slight drop-off in form from 2023/4 ever-present Saliba and partner Gabriel is also being felt, because of injuries and a lack of match sharpness among the defensive cover.

Last weekend both Arsenal and City learned once more what can happen even to them if their best players are not fit and/or firing.

Josko Gvardiol gave City hope at Bournemouth but the champions slipped to a 2-1 defeat[/caption]

For most of the defeat against Bournemouth, Guardiola’s men looked pretty toothless, with Haaland struggling to make an impact and a lack of options on the bench to replace him.

Andoni Iraola’s men were good value for their win.

And Arsenal gave one of their flattest performances of the last two and a bit seasons at St James’ Park, as hosts Newcastle deservedly completed back-to-back home victories over the Gunners.

At one point on Saturday, all three favourites for the title were losing.

But although Liverpool came back to beat Brighton and return to the top of the league, no one at Anfield will be complacent.

So far the Reds are coping well with the absence of the injured Diogo Jota, such is the array of attacking options that Arne Slot has.

Yet how would they perform if player of the season so far Ryan Gravenberch or Alexis Mac Allister were to be unavailable for an extended period, despite the good form of Curtis Jones?

And what if captain Virgil Van Dijk was out? When the Dutchman, like Rodri, suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out for much of the 2020/1 season, Liverpool’s title defence collapsed.

While Van Dijk and fellow centre back Joel Matip spent months on the sidelines, then Kop boss Jurgen Klopp desperately tried to plug the gap by moving central midfielders Jordan Henderson and/or Fabinho into the back four.

The entire balance of the team was thrown off and the Reds only just scraped into the top four.

City’s overall strength in depth and potential spending power in the January transfer window mean they should still be well capable of maintaining a title challenge.

But in a battle that could come down to a handful of points, the sale of Alvarez, as much as Rodri’s injury, may prove crucial.

Kamala Harris was ‘asleep at the wheel’ as VP and immigration nightmare will lose ‘elitist, arrogant’ Dems this election

KAMALA Harris and her team have been “asleep at the wheel” and their immigration tactics could lose them the election, an ex-congressman has warned.

Joe Walsh is among a minority of black sheep Republicans backing the Vice President‘s race for the White House – but fears her “elitist” party may have blown her chances.

Kamala Harris and her team have fallen asleep at the wheel on a number of issues, an ex-congressman has said[/caption]
AFP
Joe Walsh believes the Democrats have become an ‘elite, arrogant party’ – and it could be costly[/caption]

“Harris’ team tried to protect her from the beginning,” Walsh, behind the Republicans for Harris effort, told The U.S. Sun.

“Maybe some of her people thought she could ride this joyful vibe to the White House.

“But that’s not the case.”

Walsh believes that if votes are cast on the idea of “where does Kamala stand on issues” she “could lose”.

Similarly, if the election revolves around crunch-time topics like “immigration or the economy” she may have blown her shot.

“The Harris campaign knew what they were getting into – and they have a lot going against them,” Walsh explained.

“Immigration is a huge issue and the Biden-Harris administration really has been asleep at the wheel.

“They’ve ignored the issue of immigration for a long time.”

Harris has vowed to increase the number of asylum officers, immigration judges and immigration detention beds if she becomes president.

She also plans to push a bill through Congress to maintain order at the border, while bringing in more Border Patrol agents to keep an eye on those illegally entering the US.

Donald Trump, however, is adamant his rival hasn’t done enough, dubbing her the “border czar” and calling for an instant crackdown on immigration.

“If the election is about immigration, the economy, crime, it could go either way,” Walsh said.

“Inflation is way down from where it was before, but the Biden-Harris administration did a lousy job from the beginning in communicating this.”

Another area the former congressman believes Harris’ team has fallen short is how they’ve sold the VP to the public.

She “should have defined herself instead of trying to let Trump define her,” Walsh said.

“Trump is an idiot that can never be underestimated.

“If he had a decent debate and talk about immigration, he’d be ahead – but because he’s such an idiot, he talked about Haitian migrants eating cats and dogs.

“Because he’s so bad, he’s keeping this thing close.”

Getty

Trump famously repeated debunked myths in September that claimed immigrants were eating cats and dogs.

But according to Walsh, he has nothing to prove”.

“Biden had a lot to prove,” Walsh said.

“He had to prove he wasn’t too old, he failed. Harris has had something to prove that she’s not too far left and can do this job.

“Donald Trump hasn’t had anything to prove. Nothing matters to him because everybody knows every inch of him.”

He added, “Democrats have become an elite, arrogant party and it could be costly.

“Biden knew it – he was too old to address it. Harris knows it.”

Polls this morning showed Harris leading over Trump by just 0.7 per cent – a tiny margin in keeping with expert analysis that it’s the closest election seen in decades.

Americans have just ours left to cast their votes.

How do the US presidential elections work?

BY Ellie Doughty, Foreign News Reporter

The Democratic and Republican parties nominate their candidates with a series of votes – called state primaries and caucuses – in the run up to the election in November, held every four years.

This gives members the opportunity to choose who they want to lead the party into an election – this year, Donald Trump and following Biden’s resignation, Kamala Harris.

There are also some independent candidates running for president – arguably the most well-known was Robert F Kennedy Jr who pulled out in August and endorsed Trump.

In US elections the winner is not the candidate who gets the most votes across the country.

Instead Trump and Harris will compete to win smaller contests held in each of the 50 states.

Many of the states often vote the same way – but seven of them – Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona – tend to go in either direction.

Each state has a number of electoral college votes – partly based on population sizes – with a total of 538 across the country up for grabs.

The winner is the candidate that gets 270 or more, marking a majority in the electoral college.

All but two of the US’ 50 states – Maine and Nebraska – have a winner-takes-all rule.

Meaning whichever candidate gets the highest number of votes wins all of the state’s electoral college votes.

In 2016 Hillary Clinton won more votes nationally than Donald Trump – but she still lost the election because of electoral college votes.

The candidate who will win this election is the one who secures 270 or more college ballots.

Usually the winner is declared on the night, but it can take days to finalise the result.

In 2020 Joe Biden wasn’t officially announced as the president-elect until November 7.

The new president will be sworn into office in January on the steps of the Capitol building in Washington DC.

What has Trevor Sorbie said about how long he has to live?

TREVOR Sorbie is the genius behind some of the most iconic haircuts of all time, including Adam Ant and Bryan Ferry’s hairdos.

Sadly he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019 and shared, in 2024, that his cancer diagnosis had become terminal.

A heartbreaking diagnosis

Trevor was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019, which he said led to a “little panic attack”.

He told the Mirror: “I lost a lot of blood one night and was unusually disturbed so went to hospital.

“They told me I had bowel cancer and I had a little panic attack.

“I looked at Carole and she looked at me, we were both speechless, didn’t know what to say.

“So I went and had a big gin and tonic.”

The tumour was removed but, sadly, returned despite there only be a 5 per cent chance of his cancer returning.

Eventually, the disease spread to his liver.

In November 2024, he shared on This Morning that he only had “weeks to live” but said he did not want to undergo chemotherapy.

Trevor previously told the Times: “Chemo might give me another month but I can’t face any more of that poison.

“When I asked a nurse if I’d still be here at Christmas, she said, ‘We don’t know, Trevor’.”

Trevor’s heroic work

Trevor is married to his partner Carole, who has vowed to support him through his cancer battle.

The couple met when Trevor was in his fifties and they both run a charity together which supplies wigs for people with cancer.

The charity, My New Hair, has been a passion project of Trevor’s since 2009 and he said it is the part of his career that he is most proud of.

He told the Times: “I’ve cut wigs for women so far gone they can’t lift their heads.

“You have to radiate empathy … ‘I’m going to help you. I’m going to make you look good.’

“I’ve tried my best all my life to make women feel good about themselves.”

Trevor was born on March 13, 1949 in Scotland, but moved to Essex when he was just 11-years-old.

He developed his love for styling people’s hair when he worked in his father’s barbers in Ilford.

The celebrity coiffeur opened his own barbers at the age of 20, in 1969, before becoming a stylist for Vidal Sassoon in 1972.

He was made artistic director of the company in 1973.

Trevor created the wedge haircut; a short, groundbreaking hairstyle that became trendy in nightclubs across the world.

Celebs began to flock to him for the latest en-vogue styles and his artistic creations earned him the British Hairdresser of the Year Award.

He would go on to win this prize three more times before being appointed an MBE in 2004.

Britain’s cheapest chippy is flogging HUGE portions of fish, chips, sausages and chicken for just 1p

THE UK’s cheapest Fish & Chip shop is serving up whopping portions for just 1p – but you’ve got to be quick.

The brand-new eatery is offering 150 portions of fish, sausage, chicken or kebab with chips to celebrate their opening.

The Island House in Birmingham is offering the cheap deal[/caption]

The Island House has taken over from Shards Fryer in Shard End, Birmingham.

The 1p offer will kick off tomorrow and run through until November 9, so chippy lovers had better get their skates on.

Once all the portions have gone, the next 200 customers will be charged just £1 for sausage or chicken meals and £1.50 for kebab and fish meals.

The chippy proudly announced their opening on Facebook and said how excited they were to invite the community to eat.

“Our 9th store has officially opened its doors at Unit 8, Ownall Road, Birmingham, B34 7AH,” they wrote.

“We’re absolutely over the moon to expand into this wonderful community.

“A massive thank you to each and every customer who made this possible. Your support means everything, and we can’t wait to welcome you in!”

As well as helping hungry diners budget-friendly food, owners say they pride themselves on only serving fresh grub.

Co-owner Theo Kyriacou told Birmingham Live: “Our slogan is ‘fresh food comes to those who wait’ and we really do focus on making things fresh.

“But more than that, we only serve food we’d want to eat ourselves. It’s important to stick to your guns, making sure the quality doesn’t drop.”

The bargain deal costs just one ninth of the average price of fish and chips in the UK.

The most expensive portion is being sold by TV Chef Tom Kerridge at HarrodsLondon, which is a staggering £37 for a piece of battered cod and nine chips.

Critics branded it “pretentious” and “ridiculous”.

They urged fans to support local chippies after a study found half could shut by 2025 due to rising energy bills.

Sources claimed the “infestation” had been caused by “cutbacks” at the store.

Footage of two huge rats running around Asda’s branch in Horwich near Bolton, Lancs, last Sunday was shared with The Sun.

In one film, staff spotted a rat diving under shelves and threw a caution cleaning sign towards it, forcing the vermin to make a run for it.

A brave worker then tried to scoop up the animal with makeshift paddles.

A second film showed a rat running across the store, with terrified staff in pursuit.

A source said: “Asda has raised the issue. It’s a real problem.

“There have always been rats outside the store, but now they are regularly seen inside.”

Another source said: “There have been massive cuts to staff hours and cleaning workers and this is unfortunately the result.

“It’s not a case of ‘There’s a Rat in my Kitchen What Am I Going to Do’.

“This is reality and rats the size of cats are running around Asda.”

Last night an Asda source said the store was closed when the footage was taken so no shoppers were aware of the rat running around the store.

It was “safely removed” and inspections have not revealed any more vermin.

Also, the idea that the rodent’s existence had anything to do with cutbacks was “unsubstantiated”.

An official Asda spokesperson told The Sun last night: “We have robust hygiene processes in place in all our stores and took immediate steps to resolve this issue.

“We can reassure customers that the store has been inspected regularly since then and no further incidents have been reported.”

It follows these huge rats that were filmed crawling over fresh pastries in Sainsbury’s as the supermarket vowed to investigate.

‘THAT’S GROSS’

Videographer Anthony Mitson captured the horrifying clip of two rats crawling over an uncovered butter croissant in an unknown Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The creatures quickly scarper away when they notice Anthony – dashing behind the open-fronted stand.

The appalling clip quickly gained attention online – with gobsmacked shoppers saying “that’s me done with supermarket bakeries”.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said the supermarket chain is “immediately investigating with the store”.

One viewer wrote: “Nooooooo. See, that’s why I can’t eat from those open bakery things. That’s gross.”

Another Twitter user added: “This video is a perfect example of why supermarkets need to stop selling pastry out in the open like this.

“It’s not just the rats it’s the flies too.”

One shopper said they “don’t think they can buy the loose bakery” items any more.

It comes after a supermarket was slapped with a £78,000 fine after hygiene inspectors discovered it was full of rotting dead rats.

And this is the horrific moment a shopper spots a giant rat climbing up the shelves in an Aldi supermarket.

Scottish fan is ONLY away supporter to turn up to cheer on Atalanta against Napoli

JUST one Atalanta fan made it into the away section for their game against Napoli… and he was Scottish.

Atalanta went to Antonio Conte‘s Serie A leaders Napoli on Sunday without any support.

The home side banned anyone with a Lombardy postcode – where Atalanta is located – from entering the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

This measure was taken for security reasons.

But that did not stop Scottish supporter Steven from making the trek to Naples for the game.

He could be seen all alone in the Atalanta section with a huge club flag.

Steven also shared pictures of him inside the ground surrounded from all other corners of the arena by Napoli fans.

But the area for the away fans was completely deserted as the Scot took photos with the stewards.

Alongside the pictures, he added the caption on X: “Napoli stewards were amazing with me. Grazie.

“Easiest shift they’ve ever had. What a game that was.”
