Gogglebox’s Daniel Lustig reveals why ‘inappropriate’ new romance didn’t work out after shock marriage split

GOGGLEBOX star Daniel Lustig has said it’s ‘a shame’ a recent romance didn’t work out, and revealed his reason why.

The 49-year-old is back looking for love after his split from ex Stephen, following 11 years together.

And the Gogglebox favourite has taken to the apps, where’s he had success, including one date which he enjoyed at Brighton’s Soho House.

But it was the 18-year age gap that Daniel just couldn’t get on board with.

Opening up about the date, Daniel, who is 49, told The Sun: “There was a really lovely guy, he was 31 so really young.

“We went on a date at Soho House in Brighton. And that was really lovely. But when he was there I just realised, you know, he was too young for me.”

Daniel continued: “He was lovely and sprightly and excitable, and he had an amazing job as a writer.

“And he was also just so interesting as a person.

“But I thought maybe if I was 31 or 35 even then t would have been perfect.

“It’s a shame but he’s 31, and let’s day we got together for 20 years – he’d be 51 which is practically what I am now, and I’ll be like 70.”

Daniel playfully added: “I’d be like ‘hand me the crutches.’”

The TV favourite explained that their decision not to meet up again was “a little bit mutual.”

“We had a really nice day, and we had a cocktail and dinner but then we kind of said goodbye to each other and I think we messaged saying we had a really good time, thank you very much, but that was it.

“Obviously if he’d then started trying to message me back or something, I’d have definitely had to have the conversation about where I stood with things.”

But his age gap romance to one side, Daniel has been dating other people.

Gogglebox stars Stephen and Daniel's relationship timeline

Hairdressing duo Stephen Webb and Daniel Lustig got engaged back in 2016 and married two years later.

The couple co-own a hair salon and live in a £575,000 property on Brighton’s sought after seafront.

At the time of the engagement, Stephen appeared on Gogglebox alongside his ex-boyfriend Chris Ashby-Steed.

In 2019, Daniel made his Gogglebox debut and was immediately a big hit.

Chris, who is now in a happy relationship with husband Tony, spoke publicly about how the show affected his mental health.

Having relocated to Wales and quit showbiz, Chris said he was racked with anxiety during his time on the programme.

Just last year Daniel and Stephen shocked Gogglebox fans when they announced they were leaving the programme. Daniel had been part of the show since its launch in 2013.

Their departure opened up a new world of opportunity for the duo and it was soon announced that Stephen would take part in Dancing on Ice. But disaster struck and injury ruled him out before the live shows.

There were further gasps of shock in April when we revealed the pair had split up. They vowed to remain friends and looked to be true to their word, sharing a smiley picture the following day with Stephen’s mum on the seafront.

He said: “I was dating someone – if you can even call it that – we went on four dates in London, and it was really fun.

“But that was literally the first guy I dated since the split, so it was a bit of a learning curve.

“We were very similar in age though, we had a lot in common, it was very nice and we had a lot of fun.”

But Daniel admits that things between the two of them “dried up” romantically.

The 49-year-old, who said he’d be more than keen to give Celebs Go Dating a go, said people haven’t really clocked on to his Gogglebox fame.

Asked if he was worried people would swipe right because they’d seen him on the show, Daniel shared: “The people I have chatted to or met haven’t mentioned it on the first or second date, and if they sort of slip it in, I think ‘Oh, that’s quite cool.’ You know what I mean. I don’t want dating to be like an interview.”

And the single star is trying his hardest not to be picky on his dating quest, sometimes unsuccessfully.

Daniel added: “I’ve been quite open, actually, because in the past I’d be like ‘they must be this age, ‘they must look like this. But now my age bracket is more open than it used to be. So that’s interesting.

“To be honest, I’m not too picky but then when I meet them I can really be picky.

“I also don’t like all the texting on the apps, I don’t want a pen friend!”

And the show favourite shared that anyone he dates will also have to accept that he and ex Stephen are still good friends.

Daniel playfully added: “It’s something people will just have to put up with. We’re business partners and also dog daddy’s as we share a dog together.

“When I met Stephen I was still pals with my ex, and he took that on the chin.

“You don’t have to be really good friends with these people but you have to respect it. It’s some Louis Vuitton baggage!”

Daniel doesn’t want to “live on the apps” when it comes to meeting someone knew, instead saying he prefers a more traditional way of going about things.

“I’d like to meet someone out, strolling along the beach with my dog or in a bar, like how it used to be.

“If a friend set me up on a date I’d have to put the parameters out there, and if they got it wrong I’d probably never speak to my friend again!”

Despite Daniel’s hunt for romance, the star is busy juggling owning two hair salon businesses, alongside a life in the spotlight as a TV personality.

He’s recently appeared on The Weakest Link, and shares his desire to one day take to the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor, but “doesn’t feel famous at all.”

Daniel added: “If we’re not filming anything or doing anything like life is just the same as everyone elses.

“I’m going out on the beach picking up the dog poo in the rain. I’ve got to run to get in my car quickly to get to work so I’m not late, you know, living the same life as everyone else.”

And on a Gogglebox return? Well, Daniel says “never say never.”

African nation a big part of Junior Nsemba’s rise – as he helps kids in need

JUNIOR Nsemba will have plenty of backing as he steps up to England level – not least from the children helped at his family’s orphanage.

Wigan’s back row sensation will make his Test debut against Samoa today, sparking scenes of celebration in the capital of Cameroon, Yaounde.

Junior Nsemba has revealed how he helps orphaned children in Cameroon – who will be supporting him as he makes his England debut

And you could expect to see more kids on the streets wearing rugby league gear, almost 5,000 miles from where the 20-year-old will be doing his stuff in Leeds.

For Nsemba revealed his mother Giselle helps run an orphanage in her home city and donations mean plenty of those it aids can be found in the Warriors’ cherry and white.

“It’s a real tough thing to do,” said Nsemba, who will head to Cameroon in the off-season, after a holiday with pal and England team-mate Kai Pearce-Paul.

“It’s in Yaounde, where all my family is based, but I don’t actually know its name. I’d have to ask my mum as I don’t go into it too deeply with her. I just know she runs one.

“So we’ll sort the containers for there out and I’ll head to Cameroon with my mum. Kids there literally don’t have anything.

“But all the players at Wigan have helped massively. They give clothes they don’t want or need, or that don’t fit any longer, and we send them over in a container.

“It’s more than just once a year. One goes out whenever it’s full – now the kids are repping Wigan Warriors kit.

“There are dozens of kids running around Yaounde wearing Wigan’s kit. It’s good.”

Not everyone in Yaounde will be trying to watch Nsemba in action. He admits his fiercely protective grandmothers would be screaming at the TV if they saw him being tackled.

But Cameroon can claim credit for creating the breakout star of 2024, who Wigan were quick to get on a six-year contract as NRL talk swirled.

For its food helped turn an 18-year-old ‘tall, lanky thing’ into the powerhouse he is today after he announced his talents to some of his now team-mates in a 2022 pre-World Cup training session.

“It’s purely down to the gym and my mum’s food,” added Nsemba, who actually started pre-season on crutches because of a knee problem.

“It’s Cameroonian food, let me tell you! The main thing is jollof rice but there’s plantain and your meats – the way they cook them is different.

“When I was on crutches, I was 97 or 98kg, now I’m 110kg.

“And at that training session, I was a tall, lanky thing, so I thought I was a target. Coming up training against England was a big thing.

“Being called up for that might not seem like it to some but it was for me. Just to see what the standards and training were like.

Nsemba puts his size down to Cameroonian food

“If anything, I was more nervous then than I am now. I’m a pretty nervous guy when it comes to things anyway but as you get older, you learn to control them.”

Nsemba is not the only Wigan player coming into England’s side today. Winger Liam Marshall will finally earn a cap while prop Luke Thompson is back from suspension.

And he is ready to put lessons from his enforced watching brief into action.

He said: “It was about seeing things I could exploit and having a look out for them – there were a few things we’ve spoken about that we could’ve done better.

“We started well but we’ve got to stick with that for longer. Hopefully, we’ll get better than last week and Test rugby definitely sees things go up a few notches.”

Do this vital November gardening job now to fill your outside space with colour & stop disease next year – says expert

IT’S November! Which means it’s officially Tulip Bulb Planting time.

Unlike daffodils, these beauties would rather be planted in a colder soil – as the lower temperatures help reduce the risk of fungal and viral diseases that can affect the bulbs.

‘Acuminata’ will eventually naturalise, so it’s a great money saving tulip[/caption]

It’s the best defence against botrytis – which can cause the dreaded Tulip Fire – which produces brown spots and twisted, withered and distorted leaves.

And nowadays there’s an astonishing range of colours, heights and types.

Naomi Jones, horticulturist at bulb experts Farmer Gracy, told Sun Gardening: “Spring bulbs should be planted at 2-3 times the depth of the bulb size. For tulips, a good planting depth is 15-20cm.

“You can go for a full mixed planting scheme with a variety of different bulbs all spaced at approximately 10-15cm apart from each other, or 5cm apart from each other if growing in pots.

“If you prefer something more organised, you can plant your bulbs in groups, drifts or swathes without intermingling them with each other.

VERONICA'S TOP TULIP PICKS

Get your bulbs in the ground this month - there's great deals everywhere.

Queen of the Night – dependable and late flowering

Ballerina’ – best for planting in groups, with a light scent.

‘Lemon Beauty’ – great for contrasting with purple alliums

Purissima – early flowering, best in pots

Acuminata’ – Perennial that will eventually naturalist – smaller heads

“Remember to plant bulbs which grow to a lower height closer to the front of a border than taller varieties, which should be nearer the back.

“When planting in groups, odd numbers look best for groups of 10 bulbs or less. The aim is to achieve a gradient from low to high when planting in a border.

“In large pots, you can plant tall varieties in the centre with lower-growing varieties around the edge. Choose a well draining pot, and plant your bulbs close together without them touching each other.

“You can also layer bulbs to create a succession of blooms in one pot.”
She added: “Your soil type can have an impact on how well the bulbs grow. Spring bulbs grow happily in any free draining, crumbly soil.

“For pots, we recommend using multipurpose compost. Spring bulbs won’t enjoy very wet conditions, so if you have a heavy soil type like clay which also has a tendency to become waterlogged over winter, it is best to avoid planting bulbs in this area but work at improving the texture of the soil over time.

“Digging in mulch, such as fallen leaves, during winter every year will gradually improve the texture and aid drainage so you can enjoy a wider variety of bulbs in this area in future.”

Chart-topping DJ reveals fans have been singing the wrong lyrics to his biggest hit – and what the REAL words are

DJ Francis has revealed that people have been getting the words wrong to his song Get Low.

The 37-year-old has shed new light on his 2014 collaboration with Frenchman DJ Snake, confirming that what most people believed the lyrics to be, are actually wrong.

DJ Francis has addressed the confusion to lyrics around his hit Get Low[/caption]

While fans have been singing “get low when the whistle blow”, Francis, who also goes by the moniker DJ Hanzel, says they should have instead been singing “get low when the whistle go”.

“Ten years later, I’m here to set the record straight,” Francis says on TikTok.

“Get low when the whistle go – not blow. You could have just googled the lyrics but you chose not to – because you’re a f***ing idiot.

“We were making Get Low, I was in Paris France with DJ Snake, before he was wearing sunglasses all the time.

“We were in a studio, I think we were just trying to figure out what the vocal would be.

“I think I went and got a big roll of Babybel cheese and I remember I actually threw it through someone’s window, on a hot Paris night, and we’ve never laughed so hard in our lives.

“Because we knew someone was going to wake up to a melted Babybel on their floor.

“But that didn’t help us get to where we wanted to in terms of finding out what the lyrics would be.

“I think I left Paris sad and feeling helpless, and one day I was taking a shower and I came up with the incredible, undeniable vocals, get low when the whistle go.’

Get Low was the lead single on Francis’s debut album Money Sucks, Friends Rule, and was released in February 2014.

It went Platinum in his native USA after selling 1 million copies through sales and streaming.

In the states it went to number 5 in the Billboard Hot Dance and Electronic Songs chart – and peaked at 61 in the Billboard Hot 100.

While in the UK it charted at 23 in the country’s dance charts – and at 88 in the overall UK singles chart.
