Another 1,227 small boat migrants arrived here last week…so what exactly are you waiting for Sir Keir?

IN the end, just four migrants went to Rwanda.

It was not for lack of trying.

For two years, ministers battled in the courts, battled in the Lords and battled with their own MPs.

They exhausted shedloads of political capital — as well as £700million of cold, hard cash — in their do-or-die mission to stop the boats.

When one treaty with the African nation was ripped apart by lawyers, they went back to the drawing board and signed another.

When one law was not strong enough to withstand legal challenge, they passed a second, then a third.

Three successive Home Secretaries visited Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, to shore up the alliance, followed by a pack of reporters, including myself.

There were signs it was starting to have the desired dissuasive effect.

Remember how migrants started pouring into Ireland as Immigration hammered down doors?

But it all ended in one fell swoop on Sir Keir Starmer’s first day in charge.

Reduce crossings

The new PM called the Rwanda scheme a “gimmick” that lacked the scale to accommodate the thousands of arrivals reaching our shores every month.

Perhaps he was right — the scheme was far from perfect. Now we will never know.

One thing is certain: solving the Channel crisis is the ultimate problem of our time.

And without a credible deterrent, Labour is trying to cut this Gordian Knot with a butter knife.

During the election, we were told they would hit the ground running with a fully fleshed-out plan to “smash the gangs”.

Sir Keir elevated the immigration issue to one of his six “first steps” for government.

The now-Home Secretary Yvette Cooper held more pre-election meetings with her soon-to-be department than any other Cabinet Minister.

Civil Service boss Simon Case even presented the Home Office with the “access talks trophy”, which is proudly displayed in the Permanent Secretary’s office.

When vulnerable men, women and children are drowning in the icy waters of the Channel, there is not a moment to waste.

Yet they are not winning any prizes for reducing crossings, and one could be forgiven for finding the progress in their first four months disappointing.

There have been 31,094 arrivals so far this year, which is 16 per cent higher compared with the same point last year and surpasses the 2023 total.

Just last week, 1,227 people squeezed into 28 flimsy dinghies to make the perilous journey.

Downing Street says “nobody can expect this to be turned around overnight”.

But when vulnerable men, women and children are drowning in the icy waters of the Channel, there is not a moment to waste.

Ms Cooper claims to have acted swiftly, namely by creating a Border Security Command backed with £150million of funding.

Working with the National Crime Agency, they will use counter-terror tactics to flush out smuggling gangs and fast-track them through the courts.

All noble efforts, and Sir Keir — a former Director Of Public Prosecutions — certainly seems to genuinely loathe the “vile” people traffickers.

But is he wildly underestimating the ruthlessness of these hardened criminals to simply adapt to new policing tactics?

Governments have invested billions tackling the global drug trade, yet today it is just as easy to get a bag of weed on a street corner as it ever was.

Time immemorial proves where there’s a will, there’s a way.

The UK’s former Chief Immigration Officer, Kevin Saunders, puts it bluntly: “Unfortunately what the Prime Minister is trying to do is not feasible.”

Most of the gang bosses operate from the Middle East, he said, adding: “He’s got to come up with a deterrent to make the migrants not want to come to the UK.”

So what of a deterrent?

When asked if they would consider offshore processing — as Italy is doing in Albania — ministers mumble non-committally that they could be tempted.

It’s the same answer Labour gave in Opposition.

What are they waiting for?

Ms Cooper is banking on increasing deportations — the logic being that migrants would not bother risking their life if they would be put on a plane home.

She is right to identify our terrible returns rate — just three per cent of small boat migrants have been removed in the past six years.

Migrants have been all too aware that being removed is an empty threat.

I can reveal that from March 11-14 this year, Home Office officials phoned 197 failed asylum seekers with a “generous one-time offer” to start a new life in Rwanda.

The total package included free housing, a credit card with £3,000 on it, a new mobile phone, private healthcare and “bespoke career support”.

With a salesman-like script, staff warned: “You should prepare to leave the UK.

“You have a choice about how to leave — you can either do so voluntarily or you may be forced.

“If you choose to leave voluntarily, we are offering you a chance to relocate to Rwanda.”

Life and death

It went on: “If you decline . . . you will not get any of this support and may be forcibly removed to your home country.”

That 193 migrants who were called decided to take their chances with our immigration enforcement speaks volumes.

There is growing internal frustration that Emmanuel Macron doesn’t give a monkeys about helping — despite the half a billion quid we’ve given him.

If Ms Cooper can ramp up deportations — and returns are up a fifth on the same period last year — then more power to her elbow.

But how does she intend to return serious numbers coming from Taliban-run Afghanistan or warmongering Iran — the two countries with the highest number of Channel arrivals last year?

The holy grail of deterrents would be a returns deal with France: simply scoop up the boats in the Channel and drag them straight back to Calais.

Fat chance of that, and there is growing internal frustration that Emmanuel Macron doesn’t give a monkeys about helping — despite the half a billion quid we’ve given him.

With or without our European allies, Sir Keir is going to have to start turning the tide or risk the wrath of voters.

Politics aside, it is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Girl, 12, lucky to be alive after suffering ‘life changing injuries’ in a horror XL Bully attack

A 12-YEAR-OLD girl is lucky to be alive after suffering “life changing injuries” in a horror XL Bully attack.

Ayva Batkin was left “inches from death” after the vicious dog sank its teeth into her arm leaving her with horror bite marks in Brynmawr, South Wales last month.

Wales News
Ayva Batkin and her instructor Master Angus Rogers, of Heads of the Valleys Tang Soo Do[/caption]

But keen martial arts fan Ayva has vowed to fight back despite having a huge chunk taken from her arm and undergoing plastic surgery.

Ayva is already back training her kicks in the Korean martial art of Tang Soo Do.

Her brave father tackled the dog which was not on a lead and did not have a muzzle after the horror mauling.

Ayva has now had skin and ligaments taken from her leg by surgeons to replace the damage done to her arm and faces a lengthy recovery.

Her fellow martial artists at Valleys Tang Soo Do – where she attends with brother Logan – held a fundraiser of 50 fancy dress fights to raise money to boost her recovery.

Instructor Master Angus Rogers, said: “Before the attack the Ayva and Logan never missed a class, taking their training very seriously.

“It was humbling to hear form Ayva’s mum that one of the first things she said after her ordeal was that she’d be missing her Tang Soo Do classes – this is a true testament to Ayva’s tenacious character and determination not to let what happened affect her.

“With this in mind we wanted to make a small gesture to show just how much she means to us as a club, as she’s already back at the dojang training solely using kicks.

“She is an inspiration to other youngsters in helping to overcome adversity.

“We hope to raise enough funds for Ayva and her family to have a nice day out to try and make them forget what happened.”

Ayva’s mum Louisa said: “My daughter is the definition of bravery.

“While her arm was severely damaged one of the first things she said to me was she was so glad it was her and not her brothers, knowing especially her younger brother is so small.

“She is my inspiration and any person should aspire to have her bravery and get up and go – which has made me forget she is only 12! I am so proud of her.”

Louisa previously said Ayva, of Nantyglo, had got out of the car when the dog bolted towards her and attacked.

She said: “My daughter had just got out of the car with her dad when the dog came out of the blue. I was at home and a neighbour came to tell me something had happened.

“My daughter is going to be scarred physically and mentally for life, a few inches higher or a couple of millimetres deeper she would be dead.

“I am a dog owner myself and can’t fathom how people have such a blatant disregard for life. I just want others to realise that they need to be responsible.

“I also want people who let their kids out to make sure they tell them to be extra aware of their surroundings as this happened in a split second and with an adult around. Smaller children wouldn’t have had a chance.”

Two people were arrested following the attack on October 7 and the dog was put down.

Gwent Police said at the time: “Officers attended and a 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital with life changing injuries.

“The dog was seized by officers and will be destroyed. No other animals were involved in the attack.

“A 37-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, both from the Brynmawr area, have been arrested on suspicion of owning or possessing a dog bred for fighting and owning or possessing a dog dangerously out of control.”

Wetherspoons issues update on closure plans and three branches at risk of shutting for good

WETHERSPOONS has issued an update on its closure plans and three boozers are at risk of shutting for good.

There is some good news from the pub chain as The Sir Daniel Arms in Swindon has been taken off the market and will remain as a Wetherspoons.

The future of three Wetherspoons pubs is still hanging in the balance[/caption]

However, the company said The Hain Line in St Ives, Cornwall, was sold on October 11.

But the Ivor Davies in Cardiff is still on the market while the Foot of the Walk in Leith, Edinburgh, and The Quay, in Poole, Dorset, are both now under offer.

Under offer may mean that a bid is being considered or has been accepted.

But as the sale has not been finalised the pub remains on the market.

Since July 2023, the high street pub chain has closed more than two dozen outlets.

Pubs have closed in locations across the UK, including Stafford, London, Halifax and Penarth.

Wetherspoons regularly reviews the branches it has up for sale and has often taken venues off the market to continue operating as part of the pub chain.

In its annual report published today the pub giant said the disposal of the 27 pubs it has closed gave rise to a cash inflow of £8.9million.

Wetherspoons has sold the freehold of premises it owned outright and returned others to their landlords.

The pub sites sold may reopen to welcome drinkers under their new owners.

Landlords could also find new tenants, so Wetherspoons’ departure doesn’t necessarily mean the loss of a pub for locals.

The sites closed are:

  • The Saltoun Inn, Fraserburgh – sold
  • Widow Frost, Mansfield – sold
  • General Sir Redvers Buller, Crediton – sold
  • Butler’s Bell, Stafford – sold
  • Coronet, Holloway Road, London – sold
  • White Hart, Todmorden – sold
  • Asparagus, Battersea – sold
  • Mock Beggar Hall, Moreton – sold
  • Sir Norman Rae, Shipley – sold
  • Lord Arthur Lee, Fareham – sold
  • Market Cross, Holywell – sold
  • The Cross Keys, Peebles – sold
  • The Regent, Kirkby in Ashfield – sold
  • An Geata Arundel, Waterford – sold
  • Jolly Sailor, Hanham – sold
  • Millers Well, Purley, Halifax – sold
  • The London & Rye in Rushey Green, Catford – sold
  • Bankers Draft, Eltham – returned to landlord
  • Sir John Arderne, Newark – returned to landlord
  • Night Jar, Ferndown – returned to landlord
  • Moon and Bell, Loughborough – returned to landlord
  • Capitol, Forest Hill – returned to landlord
  • Hart and Spool, Borehamwood – returned to landlord
  • Alfred Herring, Palmers Green – returned to landlord
  • Tichenham Inn, Ickenham – returned to landlord
  • Bears Head, Penarth – returned to landlord

Wetherspoons has also opened two new sites in the last 12 months – The Captain Flinders near Euston Station and the Star Light at Heathrow Airport, and The Grand Assembly in Marlow.

A number of sites have also been expanded including the Red Lion,
Skegness; the Talk of the Town, Paignton; the Albany Palace, Trowbridge and the Mile Castle, Newcastle.

Wetherspoons, which has around 800 pubs across the UK, continues to draw crowds with ambitions openings.

A huge new £3.5million pub opened in the countryside town of Marlow, in Buckinghamshire, on September 24.

Plus, Wetherspoon opened its first pub at a holiday park at Haven’s Primrose Valley in Filey, North Yorkshire in March.

How can I save money at Wetherspoons?

FREE refills - Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.

Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.

So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.

Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.

For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.

Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.

Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.

Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.

Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.

It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.

As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Wetherspoons boss Sir Tim Martin he is planning to ramp up plans to launch “Super Spoons” pubs – making existing sites even bigger.

It has recently made a big bet on giant pubs, such as its one in Ramsgate which can cater up to 1,400 punters.

And work on its “Super Spoons” in Newcastle is now underway which will include a 26-bedroom hotel and 3,000 sq ft beer garden.

Martin also exclusively revealed to The Sun that he would not be putting up prices this year in good news for drinkers.

In its annual report to for FY24 Wetherspoons reported sales of £2,036million – an increase of 5.7% on the previous year.

Like-for-like sales were up 7.6%, driven by an 8.9% increase in bar sales and a 5.6% increase in food sales.

Profit before tax saw a dramatic uptick from £42.6m in FY23 to £73.9, in FY24.

Martin has previously said he aims to have 1,000 pubs.

What is happening to the hospitality industry?

Many food and drink chains have been struggling in recent years as the cost of living has led to fewer people eating out.

Businesses had been struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, only to be hit with soaring energy bills and inflation.

Multiple chains have been affected, resulting in big-name brands like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny’s closing branches.

Some chains have not survived. Byron Burger fell into administration last year, with owners saying it would result in the loss of over 200 jobs.

Pizza giant Papa Johns is shutting down 43 of its stores soon.

Tasty, the owner of Wildwood, said it will shut sites as part of major restructuring plans.

Stuart Hogg’s abuse got ‘worse’ when drinking and left wife terrified when he got angry

SINISTER Stuart Hogg’s wife became terrified of her husband during bouts of booze binges, a court heard today.

The disgraced rugby star, 32, also used an app to track his wife throughout five years of abuse.

Hogg berated the mother of his four children Gillian for “not being fun” after going on booze binges with colleagues.

He had anger issues which left her scared and wishing “for it to be morning as soon as possible” when he would sober up.

And he bombarded her with more than 200 texts within a few hours despite being told to leave her alone, Selkirk Sheriff Court was told.

The former Scotland captain arrived for the hearing accompanied by his parents to admit domestic abuse between 2019 and 2024.

The single charge stated that he engaged “in behaviour which was abusive” to his ex, that he “did shout and swear in an aggressive manner, track her movements (and) send messages which were alarming and distressing”.

November 4, 2024: Hogg is convicted of a five-year domestic abuse campaign against his estranged ex-wife including “using an app to track” her and bombarding Gillian Hogg, 36, with hundreds of text messages.

Prosecutor Drew Long told the court that paranoid Hogg used an app to keep tabs on Gillian, who finally left him last year.

He said: “When she was out with friends the accused often messaged her to find out her movements.

“In August 2023 Mrs Hogg was dropping kids off and received messages from Mr Hogg questioning her movements.

“It became clear to her that her husband was using an app to track her. The following month she was out with friends and he called her and was shouting and swearing. He also sent her unpleasant messages which resulted in Mrs Hogg suffering a panic attack.

“Following this Gillian contacted a lawyer who wrote to Hogg but this resulted in him turning up at her home and shouting and swearing.”

The court heard Hogg’s behaviour worsened when he was drunk.

Mr Long went on: “Gillian Hogg became scared when Mr Hogg got angry. He got worse when he was drinking and Gillian would wish it was morning so he had sobered up.”

Hogg initially faced further charges, including stalking, but his not guilty pleas were accepted.

Mr Long said: “Stuart and Gillian Hogg are in the process of a divorce. They lived in Hawick, Borders, Glasgow and Exeter, before moving back to the Borders.

“They were living in Glasgow to further Hogg’s career. They would fall into dispute about where the family should live.”

Mr Long said Hogg’s “behaviour deteriorated” as he went out partying.

He got worse when drinking…Gillian would wish it was morning so he had sobered up.

Fiscal Drew Long

He told the court Hogg would “shout and swear and accuse Mrs Hogg of not being fun” for not joining in drinking, and that her family “noticed a change in her”.

In 2022, Gillian went on a night out and was bombarded with texts from her husband which “caught the attention of people she was with”.

The following year, the couple moved to Roxburghshire where Hogg used the tracker to snoop on her.

In 2023, the mother decided to leave the sportsman and sought advice from a domestic abuse service, the court heard.

In February this year, he entered the family home despite being told not to and became “belligerent”.

On February 21, police were called due to Hogg “shouting and swearing” and he was taken into custody.

He was bailed on the condition not to contact his estranged wife.

But in August, Hogg was on a video call to his children and requested that they pass the device to their mother.

Angela Gray KC, defending, said: “Mr Hogg accepts these incidents have fallen short of what is expected of a husband.”

Hogg will be sentenced next month. Sheriff Peter Paterson will consider a non-harassment order and an anti-domestic abuse programme.

Hogg, now with French club Montpellier, declined to comment as he left court.

Horrifying pics show mangled wreck of shredded Tesla Cybertruck after crash – but all 4 passengers survived in miracle

HORRIFYING pictures have emerged showing the mangled wreckage of a Tesla cybertruck that was torn to pieces in a devastating crash.

The stainless steel electric SUV, carrying four passengers, rammed into a statue before flipping over in a nightmare crash in Mexico.

One of the passengers understood to be an 18-year-old girl, was tossed out of the vehicle in the deadly accident.

Rescuers had to cut through the twisted wreckage to pull out the other three trapped inside the 6,800-pound truck.

However, all of them survived the horrific crash in what is now being called a miracle.

Video footage of the aftermath shows the car’s torn-off bodywork and twisted chassis from the force of the impact.

A day after the crash one social media user named a snap of the cramped car on X, formerly Twitter.

The caption read: “I have no idea what the person driving this Cybertruck was doing in Mexico, but this accident is amazing. All the occupants of the Cybertruck survived.

“If this does not prove the safety of Tesla vehicles, then I don’t know what will.”

Soon after Tesla boss Musk retweeted the post bragging: “Cybertruck – tougher than a bag of nails.”

Another Cybertruck on the same day in Mexico crashed outside of Mayor Miguel Hidalgo’s office.

Local media says the driver lost control and smashed into a van.

Social media users say Cybertruck crashes are caused by drivers not being used to its rapid acceleration.

The exact cause of the crash wasn’t immediately known, but local reports suggested speeding may have been a factor.

One user said: “People are not used to driving a vehicle that accelerates from 0 to 100 in just under 4 seconds.”

Recently, Tesla was forced to recall 27,000 vehicles due to an issue that could have lead to serious injury and crashes.

The problem affects Tesla’s Cybertruck electric vehicle models in the latest blow to the manufacturer’s newest release.

They were recalled because the rearview camera image may not activate immediately after shifting into reverse.

It’s the fifth recall for the vehicle since it went on sale late last year.

Tesla has released a free software upgrade to address the issue and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 25.

According to a new filing with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 27,185 electric Cybertrucks are impacted by the recall.

Previous Tesla recalls

Two notices were issued on June 19 for an improperly adhered trunk bed trim that can detach and a front windshield wiper that can fail.

The problems led to more than 11,000 Cybertrucks being recalled.

In May, Tesla recalled more than 125,000 vehicles after the company said its seatbelt warning systems aren’t working correctly in some products.

The recall included 2012-2024 Model S, 2015-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y models.

Previously, in April, nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks were recalled due to a potentially fatal flaw that causes the accelerator pedal to become stuck.

In January, the company issued a recall for 200,000 Model S, X, and Y EVs because of a rear visibility issue.

Car recalls are relatively common across the automotive sector and occur regularly as part of manufacturers’ quality control processes.

It comes as Tesla plans to design four new versions of its in-house battery to power the Cybertruck, its forthcoming robotaxi, and other electric vehicles, according to people with knowledge of its plans.

Tesla currently sources most of its EV batteries from other companies, including Panasonic Energy and LG Energy but has been trying to ramp up production of its 4680 battery cells in the United States to lower costs and boost margins.

The development of the 4680 battery has been facing troubles, with the company losing 70% to 80% of the cathodes in test production compared with conventional battery makers, which lose fewer than 2% of their components to manufacturing defects, the report said.

Cathodes, a key part of the battery, help in creating energy that propels an EV.

Tesla is planning to introduce the dry cathodes in Cybertruck batteries by the middle of next year, the Information report said, adding that the company plans to make between 2,000 and 3,000 Cybertrucks a week using the dry-coating technology.

By 2026, Tesla plans to introduce four versions of the 4680 that use the dry cathode, one of which, code-named NC05, will power the robotaxi, according to the report.

The EV maker is expected to unveil its long-awaited robotaxi product next week as it looks to shift its focus to AI-powered autonomous technology amid slowing demand for battery-powered cars.
