Surprising new way to cut back on booze revealed – plus 5 other tips to tackle problem drinking

FROM avoiding temptation to blitzing your home of booze, there are a number of ways we’re advised to cut back on alcohol.

But now a new study has offered up a surprising new way to diminish your dependence on drink, which could boost your mental and physical health at the same time.

People working out in the modern gym
Exercise was found to reduce alcohol dependence and boost mental health

If you struggle with your drinking, giving up alcohol can feel like an impossible task.

Research carried out by scientists at Xinjiang Normal University found that exercising helped alcoholics cut down on drinking and significantly reduced their dependence on booze.

Working out also helped combat participants’ anxiety, depression and stress, as they reaped the benefits on their physical fitness.

“Exercise intervention as an adjunct to the treatment of alcohol use disorder patients is significantly effective,” researchers said.

Alcohol use disorder is the medical term for alcoholism or alcohol addiction.

It describes a strong, often uncontrollable desire to drink – even if it’s harmful to your health, putting your safety at risk and damaging relationships.

It’s estimated that over 600,000 people in England are dependent on alcohol, according to Alcohol Change UK – but only 18 per cent of them are receiving treatment for it.

For people that do seek treatment for their problem drinking, the risk of relapsing is as high as 90 per cent, study authors noted.

“Physical activity has been shown to affect alcohol use disorder both psychologically and physiologically,” they wrote in a paper published to the journal PLOS ONE.

“Physiologically, exercise can increase beta-endorphin levels, which are associated with post-exercise euphoria, and exercise may also mitigate the negative effects of ethanol intake through cellular-level mechanisms.

“At the same time, physical activity can improve mental performance and increase self-confidence, as well as bring about a relaxing and calming effect, helping to reduce psychological dependence on alcohol.”

The Chinese research team conducted a review of 17 trials that included a total of 1,905 patients with alcohol use disorders, who were asked to work out for a minimum of two weeks while receiving treatment.

Their review included a number of different types of exercise – from slow walking, jogging and swimming, to resistance resistance training, yoga, Pilates, and basketball.

Workout sessions could be between 15 and 75 minutes long, and most participants gave the “exercise intervention” a go for about 12 weeks.

Researchers said yoga could be a helpful form of exercise for people to curb alcohol cravings[/caption]

They compared people’s dependence to booze – as well as their mental and physical health – to a control group who didn’t exercise while receiving treatment.

Researchers looked at how many drinks people had daily or weekly and used the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) to calculate people’s dependence to booze.

To assess participants’ physical health, researchers looked at how much oxygen their body consumed while exercising, as well as their resting heart rate.

For mental health, anxiety, depression and stress levels were assessed.

How to cut back on drinking

If you're concerned about your drinking, a good first step is to see a GP.

They’ll be able to give advice and support on how to manage your drinking habits and cut back safely.

This might involve counselling, medicines or detox services.

Being dependent on alcohol means you feel you’re not able to function without it and means stopping drinking can causes physical withdrawal symptoms like shaking, sweating or nausea.

If you have these symptoms when you don’t drink, it could be dangerous to stop drinking too quickly without proper support.

There are also many charities and support groups you can join or speak to, as well as helplines:

Tips to quit

When you’re ready to stop, the following tips and techniques can make it that little bit easier.

  1. Tell family and friends that you’re aiming to stop drinking alcohol and explain why – reminding yourself and the people close to you why you want to stop drinking can help keep you on track, and may even encourage someone else to give up or cut down with you.
  2. Identify triggers avoid avoid situations where you may be tempted to drink, at least in the early stages – from after work pub quizzes to boozy dinners.
  3. Keep busy in the times you’d usually drink by trying something new – get active or meet a friend at the cinema.
  4. Reward yourself as you make progress and don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up every once in a while – it can be helpful to give yourself short-term goals.
  5. Notice how your body feels without booze – you might find that you have more energy, are sleeping better or have lost weight.

They found that engaging in any form of exercise significantly decreased the amount of drinks participants consumed on a daily and weekly basis.

Those who worked out to curb their alcohol cravings also had lower AUDIT scores – the lower the score for the 10-question screening tool, the lower the person’s risk of alcohol related issues.

Participants who exercised also had an improved resting heart rate and reported lower levels of anxiety, depression and stress.

“This study revealed that since most alcohol use disorder patients have poor physical functioning and lower-than-average physical fitness due to chronic excessive alcohol consumption and a lack of exercise,” researchers said.

a poster showing what happens when you stop drinking alcohol

They pointed out that several of the studies’ participants chose to do yoga alongside treatment.

“Yoga is a mind-body exercise that integrates breathing and mental training while practising physical postures,” they wrote.

“This study demonstrated that yoga exercise is a good intervention to complement alcohol use disorder treatment.”

The authors called on future studies to “carefully differentiate between the types of exercise and exercise intensity and to analyse the effects of exercise of different natures on alcohol dependence more deeply to develop the most suitable exercise prescriptions for the clinical treatment of alcohol use disorder”.

Signs you might have a drinking problem

It can be tricky to spot the signs of alcohol dependence.

Doctors often tend to look for these specific signs:

  • Impaired control over alcohol use – not being able to control how long a drinking session is, how much alcohol you consume when you do drink, how frequently you drink, being unable to stop drinking once you start, or drinking on inappropriate occasions or at inappropriate places.
  • Giving increasing priority to alcohol – giving precedence to drinking over other daily activities and responsibilities, drinking is becoming more important to you than looking after your health, or carrying on drinking despite negative consequences for your health or life.
  • Unwanted physical or mental effects from drinking – showing signs of increased tolerance to alcohol (having to drink more for the same effect), experiencing withdrawal symptoms, or using alcohol to prevent or alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

If you think you may be drinking too much, or that your drinking is beginning to have a damaging effect on your life, Drinkaware also has a quick online test that can tell you if you should be concerned.

‘Player burnout is BIG conversation in dressing rooms and strike action can’t be ruled out’, says Tottenham ace

BEN DAVIES says player burnout talk among Prem stars has increased since Rodri’s injury.

And Tottenham’s long-serving defender refused to rule out future strike action over the increased workload sparked by Fifa’s new Club World Cup next year.

Davies admitted Rodri’s injury has stoked up the ‘burnout’ talk[/caption]

Manchester City’s Rodri warned his peers were close to going on strike over the bursting calendar – days before the Ballon d’Or winner suffered a season-ending knee injury against Arsenal last month.

Player welfare is a hot topic across Prem dressing rooms and Davies said: “It’s something that players right now have been talking about.

“And it’s become a big conversation – and probably even more of a conversation since we saw Rodri discuss it and then have a pretty serious injury.”

Davies, 31, is Spurs’ PFA representative and pleaded recently for a three-week football blackout to help tackle the thorny subject.

Liverpool’s Andy Robertson then called for a taskforce of players and managers to be set up in a bid to solve the sport’s crazy fixture pile-up.

When asked if Robertson’s idea is a good one, Davies added: “It’s a difficult one right now. It’s probably a sensitive topic.

“When you have seen the unions in other sports, especially in the US, come together and in the past they have taken some serious and drastic action with strikes and stuff like that…”

Davies is referring to industrial action taken in America which has seen lock-outs in basketball, baseball and hockey.

So does the Welshman ever see the threat of striking becoming a genuine reality?

He replied: “It’s difficult to say never. I don’t know.

“That conversation has picked up in the last year or so. In football I’ve never seen it before.”

Davies hopes for change but the Tottenham star believes it is down to the governing bodies rather than the players to sort out the calendar.

He said: “It’s a tough one. There are times when there are so many games and it feels very continuous.

“We wouldn’t mind a solid block of time away from football.

“But, ultimately, we are in a situation where there are a lot of games and there are a lot of playing competitions. You do want to be involved in them all.

“As much as players will say what they want or would like to happen, it’s probably out of our hands until the competition organisers agree on finding a schedule that works for everyone.”

Davies has made almost 300 Premier League appearances with Swansea and Tottenham.

The left-back has also won 90 caps with Wales and played at two Euros finals and a World Cup.

But Davies has played the same number of games for his country as his club – four – this season.

He has made three Europa League appearances – as well as one in the Carabao Cup.

Although, he is waiting for his first Prem action, he could be involved for Ange Postecoglou’s men at home to Rodri’s City in tonight’s Carabao Cup fourth round clash.

Davies, who moved to the North Londoners a decade ago and is in the final year of his contract, says Tottenham hold the cards on his future.

He added: “That’s probably in the club’s hands and not so much mine.

“I’ve been at the club a long time. My wife is from London, my son was born here.

“It’s definitely a huge part of my life. I’m very settled here right now.

“I do hope I will get more minutes. Sometimes in football you have to bide your time.

“All I can do is keep myself in as good nick as I can, work hard every day and when I do get those minutes then I have to do my best to show I am still capable of performing at the highest level.”

Davies, who attended a McDonald’s Fun Football session, said: “It’s incredible to see all these kids playing football.

“It shows how important programmes like McDonald’s Fun Football are to communities across Wales.

“As a parent, I love seeing kids getting active and having fun.”

Ben Davies was celebrating the latest free wave of McDonald’s Fun Football sessions this Autumn, available to all children aged 5-11 across Wales. Sign up now for your nearest free session at mcdonalds.co.uk/football .

‘I can’t tell you that’, says ref leaving Nathan Aspinall in stitches after darts star asks bizarre question

NATHAN ASPINALL was left in stitches after a ref responded “I can’t tell you that” to his bizarre question.

The darts star was in action on Thursday for Event 29 of the Players Championship.

The ref left Aspinall tickled, with even opponent Michael Smith laughing

Aspinall found himself up against pal and Premier League rival Michael Smith in a third round clash.

Things did not go to plan for The Asp, who crashed out with a 6-3 defeat.

But both men were all smiles following an amusing incident in the final leg.

Smith left himself with just 16 points to seal victory.

While Aspinall faced a daunting task with a total of 236.

And hilariously, he asked the ref “can I leave a finish?” before hurling his darts at the board.

However, the man by the board had a blunt response, saying: “I can’t tell you that.”

This left everyone giggling, including the judge.

And as it stood, Aspinall was unable to leave a finish as he took his points tally down to 194.

Smith appeared to laugh uncontrollably as he stepped up to the plate.

Yet he made no mistake with his checkout as he secured the win.

Last month Aspinall revealed he was nearing a darts comeback after undergoing painful treatment on an elbow injury.

He said: “I had to go back to the Matchplay and give it my all to try and defend my title, but I knew it was never going to happen. Obviously, after that I made the call to pull out of everything and get it done.

“It’s been a tough couple of months for me, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The treatment has gone fantastically and we’re not far off coming back!

“I’ve just been back to the hospital to get all of my results and basically, in a nutshell, I’ve had all these tendon problems, golfer’s elbow, tendonitis.

“So I’ve had six or seven treatments of shockwave therapy, plus rehab, but I was just still getting a lot of pain and a lot of swelling in my elbow.

“There’s basically a bone in my elbow joint that’s rubbing into things. So I need to have an injection with something called plasma directly into my elbow joint. That’s the last piece of the puzzle.”

Five hidden announcements in the Budget document including boost for millions on benefits

HOUSEHOLDS should be aware of these hidden announcements which they have missed in the Autumn Statement.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled her financial plan for the year this morning, which includes a cut to pub beer prices, and hikes in the minimum wage and state pension.

The Budget at a glance

Millions of workers are set to get a £1,400 pay rise as the National Living Wage will be hiked by 6.7% come April.

Elsewhere, beer drinkers are going to see a penny knocked off the price of a pint and drivers will welcome their 15th consecutive year of fuel duty freezes.

However, it was not all good news as smokers are set to rise by £16.78 from tonight due to hikes in tobacco duty.

Elsewhere, raids on inheritance tax mean that bereaved families will have to pay tax on their deceased loved ones’ pensions.

These are the headlines which have been dominating your newsfeed all afternoon, but there are a few hidden gems you might have missed.

The Sun has dug deep into the official Autumn Statement to uncover some announcements you may have missed.

HIGH-INCOME CHILD BENEFIT CHARGE

The government will not proceed with the reform to base the High-Income Benefit Charge (HICBC) on household incomes.

This is because it would have come at a significant fiscal cost of £1.4 billion by 2029-30 if setting the threshold to £120,000-£160,000, where no families would lose out.123

To make it easier for all taxpayers to get their HICBC right, the government will allow employed individuals pay their HICBC through their tax code from 2025, and pre-prepopulate Self Assessment tax returns with Child Benefit data for those not using this service.

You can read more about the tax here.

HELP TO SAVE

The government will extend the current Help to Save scheme until April 5 2027.

The scheme offers lower earners a savings account where they can save a maximum of £50 a month for four years and receive a 50% government boost at the end of year two and year four.

This helps workers kickstart a savings habit and offers up to £1,200 over the four years.

MORTGAGE GUARANTEE SCHEME

The government plans to make the mortgage guarantee scheme permanently available.

Through the scheme, buyers can get a 95% loan-to-value (LTV) mortgage.

The scheme has been extended a number of times and was set to end in 2025.

But now the government intends to make it a permanent fixture of its policy.

TRIPLE LOCK UNTIL END OF PARLIAMENT

The government will maintain the State Pension Triple Lock for the duration of this Parliament.

The triple lock system sees the state pension rise in line with whatever is highest out of: wages for May to July, 2.5% or September’s inflation figures.

By doing this it ensures that pensioners are being paid enough to keep up with rising costs.

MODERNISE SELF ASSESSMENT

The government will invest £16million to modernise HMRC’s app to allow income tax Self Assessment taxpayers to make voluntary advance payments in instalments.

This should make it easier for people who are self-employed or have a side hustle to update HMRC on their earnings.

If you are self-employed you can voluntarily pay National Insurance, but you have to pay it in advance.

Now HRMC will give you the option to pay instalments.

BRITAIN’S MOST MEMORABLE BUDGETS

By Harry Goodwin

Today is the first Labour budget for 14 years – and the first ever to be delivered by a female Chancellor.

Brits are bracing for a raft of tax hikes as Rachel Reeves tries to plug the “£22billion black hole” she says she’s found in government accounts.

Here are five other budgets which have caused a stir over the years.

1979 – Geoffrey Howe, Conservative

Margaret Thatcher’s Chancellor Geoffrey Howe slashed both the top rate of income tax and the standard rate.

He also doubled VAT – shifting the tax burden from income to consumption in a huge change for Brits.

Howe also eased controls on foreign exchange in a bid to control inflation.

The budget signalled a massive break from the last Labour government and set the pattern for decades to come.

1988 – Nigel Lawson, Conservative

Nigel Lawson (dad to domestic goddess Nigella) massively slashed income tax again.

The deputy Commons speaker twice cleared the chamber amid noisy protests from Labour MPs slamming the tax cuts.

Lawson also set off a property bonanza by announcing an end to double mortgage tax relief for couples buying homes.

1993 – Norman Lamont, Conservative

In March 1993 the economy was still reeling from Black Wednesday, when the pound crashed out of the European exchange rate mechanism.

Lamont announced tax rises including VAT on domestic gas and electricity.

Later that year Lamont’s successor Ken Clarke froze personal tax allowance and brought in stealth taxes on insurance and plane passengers.

The Lamont and Clarke budgets marked the end of the Tories’s scything tax cuts – and set the stage for Labour’s return to office in 1997.

2002 – Gordon Brown, Labour

Brown raised national insurance by a penny on the pound to fund higher spending on the NHS.

The future PM had fretted over a possible backlash from voters who had re-elected Labour in 2001.

But he managed to pull off the largest rise in health spending in the history of the NHS.

2009 – Alistair Darling, Labour

Labour’s last budget before today came amid the credit crunch and soaring unemployment.

Darling ramped up taxes and borrowing in a bid to fill up draining Treasury coffers.

Tory leader David Cameron blasted Labour’s ‘utter mess’ – and was in power a year later.

2022 – Kwasi Kwarteng, Conservative

Kwarteng unveiled his economic package less than a month after becoming Liz Truss’s Chancellor.

Technically, it was a fiscal statement rather than a budget – but it turned out to be just as seismic.

Rising Tory star Kwarteng announced £45billion in tax cuts including a drop in all rates of income tax.

Markets took frights and the pound went into freefall before the Bank of England waded in to stop a run on UK pension funds.

Mortgage rates soared and Kwarteng was out of the job just three weeks later.

Exact amount your pay will rise by after Rachel Reeves reveals income tax change in Autumn Budget

MILLIONS of workers will get a bumper pay rise from 2028 when income tax and National Insurance thresholds are unfrozen.

The measure, announced today by Rachel Reeves, will mean thousands will save up to £211 a year in tax.

The Chancellor had been widely expected to extend the freeze, which has been in place since 2021, in today’s Budget.

But in a surprise move, the thresholds will increase again in 2028, boosting incomes.

It will see the earnings level at which you become liable to pay income tax and national insurance (£12,570 a year) increase in line with inflation.

The freeze on higher and additional rate income tax bands will also end.

This adjustment means that individuals earning between £15,000 and £35,000 annually will save £71 per year in income tax and National Insurance, assuming a 2% increase to the thresholds.

For those with incomes exceeding £60,000 per year, the savings could amount to up to £211 a year starting in 2028.

Shaun Moore, personal tax expert at Quilter: “Despite widespread speculation that Labour would break its pledge not to raise taxes for working people by extending the income tax threshold freeze beyond 2028, the Chancellor has confirmed that the freeze will thaw as originally intended.

“This decision brings relief to many taxpayers who were concerned about the potential for prolonged fiscal drag.”

You currently pay no income tax on the first £12,570 of your earnings.

This is known as the personal allowance.

You then pay tax at 20% on income over this and up to £50,271.

Then, on earnings over that and up to £150,000, pay 40%.

The threshold at which employees begin paying National Insurance contributions (NICs) is also set at £12,570 per year.

Most people pay 8% NICs on earnings between £242 and £967 a week.

Plus, you have to pay 2% on anything you earn over £967 a week – or £4,189 per month.

Like the personal allowance, the NICs threshold has been frozen since 2021.

The “trick and treat” Halloween package included:

Frozen tax thresholds act as a “stealth tax,” allowing the government to collect extra revenue without raising tax rates.

As wages increase due to inflation or other factors, more people will find their incomes pushed into higher tax brackets.

This phenomenon, known as “fiscal drag,” leaves more people paying more taxes, thereby reducing their disposable income.

However, from April 2028 both thresholds will become unfrozen, meaning they’ll rise with inflation.

For example, if the personal allowance and NICs threshold rise by 2%, it will be worth £12,822 in 2028.

What is the personal allowance?

THE personal allowance is the amount you can earn each year tax-free.

In the current tax year – which runs from April 6 2024 to April 5 2025 – the figure is £12,570.

Any earnings above this threshold are taxed at different rates, depending on the income bracket.

However, this amount may be larger if you claim certain allowances, including a blind person’s allowance, marriage allowance and child tax credit.

Income tax also applies to money you make outside your job, not just your earnings.

But there are also some tax-free allowances on top of the personal allowance for these other sources of income.

If you are self-employed, you don’t have to pay tax on savings interest, dividends and the first £1,000 of income.

INCOME TAX RATES

You currently pay no income tax if you earn £12,570 or less.

On earnings between £12,570 and up to £50,270, you pay the basic income tax rate of 20%.

Wages of £50,271 and above are taxed at the higher rate of 40%.

The additional income tax rate, which applies to earnings above £150,000, is 45%.

The income tax thresholds generally rise yearly so that people can earn more without paying more tax.

These thresholds will rise again in now frozen until 2030.

What is National Insurance?

NATIONAL Insurance is a tax on your earnings, or profits if you're self-employed.

These contributions make you eligible for things like the state pension and certain benefits.

You’ll usually pay National Insurance Contributions (NICs) when you’re over the age of 16 and earning a certain amount.

You can see the amount of NICs you pay on your payslip.

If you’re employed, the company you work for deducts the tax and pays it to HMRC for you.

Self-employed individuals generally have to pay NICs themselves when completing a self-assessment tax return.

NATIONAL INSURANCE RATES

Most people now pay 8% NICs on any earnings between £242 and £967 a week.

This means if you earn more than £12,570 a year, you’ll start paying NICs.

You pay mandatory National Insurance if you’re 16 or over and are either:

  • An employee earning more than £242 per week from one job
  • Self-employed and making a profit of more than £12,570 a year

Plus, you have to pay 2% on anything you earn over £967 a week – or £4,189 per month.

The exact amount you pay will depend on how much you earn, as it’s a percentage of earnings between these amounts.

You can check how much National Insurance you’ve paid by visiting gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record.

Ruth Langsford ‘dreading first Christmas since Eamonn Holmes split’ as he’ll ‘spend it with new girlfriend’

RUTH Langsford is reportedly dreading Christmas this year as she faces her first without husband Eamonn Holmes in over 20 years.

The couple, who announced their split in May, initially vowed to remain cordial, however things have soured since Eamonn went public with his new girlfriend, relationship counsellor Katie Alexander.

With the festive season nearly upon us, sources have said that Ruth’s not looking forward to this year, especially considering their 22-year-old son, Jack, is caught between his parents.

It’s believed Eamonn plans to spend Christmas with Katie.

“Ruth is dreading Christmas coming up, because it will be her first one apart from Eamonn – who could be spending it with his new partner,” a source told OK!

“This Christmas means creating different memories,” they added. “Ruth and Eammon are positively co-parenting Jack, but he’s at the age where he might want to do something different at Christmas, and that’s worrying Ruth.

“He’s no doubt hurting too, seeing his mum and dad go through this. However, Ruth knows people will be looking up to her and feel inspired about how strong she appears on the outside.

“She knows the first Christmas will always be the hardest, and she just wants to get through it.”

Both Ruth and Eamonn are extremely proud of their son, with Ruth previously telling Woman and Home Magazine that her greatest wish is “happiness”, calling him “delightful and caring”.

The pair had been together for 23 years and married for 14 before they shockingly announced they had gone their separate ways.

It was later revealed they had been secretly separated for up to a year before it was made public and they filed for divorce.

In the aftermath of their split, Ruth has been supported by her friends and family, and has even had a glamorous makeover.

She even shared videos of her enjoying a wild night in with bestie Rylan Clark.

Eamonn has since started a relationship with Katie Alexander, 42, with the couple being seen heading off on holidays to Ibiza together.

Insiders suggest Ruth came up with a special brand of revenge for Eamonn wasting no time in flaunting his new relationship by removing the stairlift from their Surrey home so he couldn’t collect his things.

She has now lawyered up with “fierce” divorce attorney, Catherine Costley in order to navigate a financial settlement and officially end their marriage.

My best friend is female, lesbian and taken, still I’m on the cusp of an affair

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M about to embark on an affair with my female best friend, after years in a sexless relationship – but I know it’s foolish.

Last time we met, we kissed and fondled each other, and we would have had sex had her girlfriend not come home. I can’t stop thinking about her.

I’m about to embark on an affair with my female best friend, after years in a sexless relationship

I’m a 39-year-old guy, and live with my partner, who is 38.

She has chronic fatigue and is quite disabled by it, so I’m her carer. I love her, but for the past three years, she’s had no interest in sex at all.

I’m still young and incredibly unhappy and frustrated with the situation, but she won’t discuss it.

My best friend is a gay woman, 35, who has a long-term girlfriend.

She’s always been there for me, and I’ve confided in her about my relationship issues, including the lack of sex.

She told me she’s not happy with her girlfriend either.

The girlfriend has made no secret of the fact she doesn’t like me. She’s clearly extremely jealous of our relationship as friends.

Last week, I went to my best friend’s for coffee and we had a heart to heart. We admitted we were in love with each other and she said I was the only man she’d ever been attracted to.

She hugged me and, somehow, we ended up kissing and touching each other through our clothes. I was really turned on and could tell she was too.

Before we could rip each other’s clothes off, we heard her girlfriend coming in the front door, and jumped apart.

Since then, I have fantasised about sex with her daily.

Would I be crazy to take things further?

DEIDRE'S STORIES

Tom is convinced his girlfriend fancies his brother

DEIDRE SAYS: Take things further and you risk not only wrecking your relationship – and hers – but also destroying your friendship.

You seem to be looking for a way out of your relationship.

It’s incredibly hard to leave someone who you’re caring for, so perhaps part of you wants to torpedo things by being unfaithful.

Or perhaps, you and your best friend really are destined to be together.

Either way, it’s important not to rush into anything.

Perhaps you could suggest to your best friend that you take a step back until you’re sure about what you both want.

It might help to have some counselling.

See my support pack about this, and contact TR –  formerly Tavistock Relationships (tavistockrelationships.org.uk).

My support pack, Torn Between Two Women, should also help.
