John Lewis has recalled its latest Quality Street Sweet Glass Baubles due to their striking resemblance to the actual chocolates.

Officials have warned that people risk being left with cuts to their mouth or hand if they try to take a bit of the bauble.

The Christmas baubles were sold at John Lewis from September 1 to October 17.

The Office for Product Safety & Standards warned: “The products present a risk of cuts or injuries as they may be mistaken with real chocolates.

“If the glass baubles are bitten or swallowed the user could receive lacerations to the mouth or hands.

The products do not meet the requirements of the Food Imitations (Safety)Regulations 1989 or the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.”

They added: “Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately and return the item to a John Lewis & Partners store for a full refund.”

Shoppers who need further assistance should contact the” John Lewis Customer Service team at 03456 049 049 (09.00-17.00 Monday to Friday)”.

The affected products are the Various colours of glass baubles in Fudge, Coffee Crème, The Purple One, The Green Triangle, Caramel Swirl and Strawberry Delight designs.

It follows a soup recalled from a UK supermarket over fears it contained shards of metal.

A batch of butternut squash soup has been declared “unsafe to eat” due to possible contamination, the food safety watchdog and supermarket have warned.

Marks & Spencer urged anyone who bought its own brand of soup to return it for a full refund.

The recall covers soups with a use-by date of 6.10.2024 and barcode 0041142.

“The product may contain pieces of metal making it unsafe to eat,” the Food Standard Agency (FSA) said.

Recall notices are on display in shops and online.

An M&S spokesperson said: “Please do not consume this product.

“Any customers in procession can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given.

“No other M&S products are affected.

“We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”

For more information, you can call M&S on 03330148555.

It comes after an urgent “avoid” was issued for 66 “contaminated” dips sandwiches and wraps which could pose a lethal threat.

And Asda has urgently recalled a popular chicken product over health risk fears.

What to do if someone is choking

First aid steps for someone who is choking.

Mild choking

If the airway is only partly blocked, the person will usually be able to speak, cry, cough or breathe, and may be able to clear the blockage themselves.

In adults:

  • Encourage them to keep coughing
  • Ask them to try to spit out the object
  • Don’t put your fingers in their mouth
  • If coughing doesn’t work, start back blows

In children:

  • If you can see the object, try to remove it (but don’t poke blindly)
  • Encouraging coughing
  • Shout for help if coughing isn’t effective or the child is silent
  • Use back blows if the child is still conscious but not coughing

Severe choking

In adults:

Where choking is severe, the person won’t be able to speak, cry, cough or breathe.

Without help, they’ll eventually become unconscious, so you should carry out back blows.

In children:

Back blows can be carried out on children under one year.

If this doesn’t work, chest thrusts can be started on kids up to 12 months old, and abdominal thrusts for those over one year.

Call 999 if the blockage doesn’t come out after trying back blows and either chest or abdominal thrusts.

Keep trying this cycle until help arrives.

Even if the object has come out, get medical help. Part of the object might have been left behind, or the patient might have been hurt by the procedure.

The 9 warning signs of diabetes after Dragon’s Den star Sara Davies health scare led to drastic weight loss

DRAGON’S Den star Sara Davies has spoken of her fear of type 2 diabetes after being told she is ‘high risk’.

The 40-year-old said she was “borderline” early-onset diabetic after having a blood test last year, but has since taken action.

Early-onset diabetes is a term for diabetes that occurs in people under the age of 40.

Type 2 diabetes happens when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or cells don’t react to insulin

This causes glucose (sugar) to build up in the blood instead of being used for energy.

Being overweight or obese, especially around the waist, can make the body resistant to insulin.

Businesswoman Sara told Prima: “I had gestational diabetes in both my pregnancies, which meant that I’m at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.”

The owner of arts and crafts supply company Crafter’s Companion dropped three dress sizes last year by “cutting out sugar”, chocolate, cake and fruit and fruit juice and cutting down her alcohol intake.

She had initially lost weight when she appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, when she was “on top” of being at a “higher risk of type two diabetes in later life”.

Sara, who was eliminated in week eight of the 19th series of the BBC dancing show, said: “I was running a lot and eating well, all because I was in a routine, so I got in great shape.”

But since the show ended she saw weight creep back on and her glucose levels went back up.

After Strictly finished the star “lost the routine and motivation” and went “back downhill”.

“I saw the weight pile back on, which for me is a problem,” Sara said.

“I need to get my BMI comfortably under 30 to be healthy.”

Every year on her birthday, Sara gets her HbA1C checked, saying: “This tells me how close my blood sugar levels are to early-onset diabetes.

“And last year, my HbA1C was right on the borderline.”

According to Diabetes UK, an HbA1c measures your “average blood glucose levels for the last two to three months”.

If it is in the higher end then a person can develop diabetes-related issues in their eyes and feet.

Healthcare professionals can advise patients who could be edging towards pre-diabetes on how to change their lifestyle, and keep glucose in target levels, the charity said.

According to Diabetes UK, the nine most common warning signs of the condition include:

  1. Tiredness
  2. Peeing more often
  3. Frequent thirst
  4. Itchy skin
  5. Blurred vision
  6. Slow healing of cuts and wounds
  7. Tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands or feet
  8.  Patches of darker skin
  9. Itching and yeast infections

‘Cutting sugar’

Sarah went on to describe herself as a “yo-yo dieter” and explained she had thought about losing weight before joining Dragon’s Den in 2019 – but then decided she was “happy with how I look”.

Sarah added: “I’m a big personality and I’m no different when I’m three dress sizes smaller – it really doesn’t bother me at all.

“What does bother me is the health side of it.”

She went from a size 16 to a size 12 and said that people want a “magic bullet” for weight loss, but pointed to “lifestyle changes” being better.

Type 1 vs type 2 diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes, which causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

There are two main types of diabetes, which cause a person’s blood sugar level to become too high.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce the hormone insulin.

It affects around 344,000 people in the UK.

Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is far more common, accounting for more than 90 per cent of the 4.4million adults with diabetes.

It occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells don’t react to it properly.

There are no lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk of type 1 diabetes.

But you may be at higher risk of type 2 diabetes if you are overweight or obese, eat unhealthily, have a family history of the condition, take certain medications for a long time, have high blood pressure, and have had gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

People of Asian, Black African or African Caribbean origin are also at increased risk.

The full interview with Davies is available in the December 2024 issue of Prima, which is now on sale.

Early-onset diabetes on the rise

Globally, the International Diabetes Federation estimates more than 75million people aged 20-39 live with type 2 diabetes.

In 2021-22, there were 139,255 people under 40 with type 2 diabetes in England and Wales, which is 4.8 per cent of all type 2 diabetes cases under 80.

This is an 18.7 per cent increase since 2017-18, which is steeper than the 11.3 per cent increase for those aged 40–79.

Between 2016-17 and 2022-23, the number of people under 40 diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the UK increased by 40 per cent.

This is a faster rate of increase than among people over 40.

How to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes

According to Diabetes UK, there are a few diet tweaks you can make to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes:

  1. Choose drinks without added sugar – skip out the sugar in your tea and coffee and stay away from fizzy and energy drinks
  2. Eat whole grains such as brown rice, wholewheat pasta, wholemeal flour, wholegrain bread and oats instead of refined carbs
  3. Cut down on red and processed meat like bacon, ham, sausages, pork, beef and lamb
  4. Eat plenty of fruit and veg – apples, grapes, berries, and green leafy veg such as spinach, kale, watercress, and rocket have been associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes
  5. Have unsweetened yoghurt and cheese
  6. Cut down on booze – and have a few days a week with none at all
  7. Have healthy snacks like unsweetened yoghurt, unsalted nuts, seeds and fruit and veg
  8. Eat healthy fats included in nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil
  9. Cut down on salt
  10. Get your vitamins and minerals from food instead of tablets

The items are worth £310 in total but Martin explained how you can get it for just £85[/caption]

The festive season is just around the corner and can leave a big dent in budgets.

But there are also opportunities to bag some cracking deals if you shop at the right time and place.

Martin told viewers that the M&S Beauty Advent Calendar provided the perfect opportunity to snap up a bargain.

The money whizz said that it was made up of 25 items that would separately cost £310.

But Martin has done his research to find out that you could get the box for a total of £85 in outlay.

Shoppers must first spend at least £35 on full priced M&S clothing, beauty or homeware.

Then you can secure the calendar for £50.

Martin says that the eagerly awaited calendar is a source of multiple gifts after being divided up.

But he warned viewers that the incredible calendar may sell out quickly due to high demand.

It comes as M&S shoppers rushed to buy a £15 box of chocolates which comes with a unique festive surprise.

The fancy supermarket has brought out a gift box with a magical miniature forest inside – and when you shake it, it snows.

To find your nearest M&S store, you can go to its website and use the store finder tool.

What else is M&S selling this Christmas?

M&S festive food is always the centre of excitement at Christmas time, with shoppers splashing that little bit extra to mark the occasion.

The Sun tried all 450 new items in the M&S huge Christmas range, including a turkey feast lasagne and hot honey brie.

We rated the Xmas dinner dip the top of our list this year – it features bacon bits, turkey, cranberry and even stuffing and is delicious to eat with bread or crisps.

Booze lovers will also be pleased to see the original snow globe gin liqueur back on shelves this year after it was slashed from last year’s range.

In previous years M&S have had to install an alcohol buying limit because of the massive demand.

Shoppers can also buy 75cl bottles of cocktail drinks on sale at the moment for just £5.50, which come in flavours Christmas Cosmo, Christmas Colada and Christmas on the Beach.

The new white mulled wine is also £6 and offers another twist on a winter favourite, with pear, vanilla and mulled spice flavours.

How to save money on Christmas shopping

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.

Limit the amount of presents – buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.

Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you’re not having to buy multiple presents.

Plan ahead – if you’ve got the stamina and budget, it’s worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales.

Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you’re not forking out more than you should though.

Buy in Boxing Day sales – some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25.

Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.

Shop via outlet stores – you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.

They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor.

Fresh blow for Katie Price as she cuts price a SECOND time to sell Mucky Mansion for £1.3m after revealing ‘new babies’

Katie Price has had another blow as the price of her Mucky Mansion has been cut for the second time.

In previous interviews, the former I’m A Celebrity star bragged that the dilapidated house was worth £2million.

The sprawling house boasts nine bedrooms and four bathrooms[/caption]

Previously, The Sun exclusively revealed that the property was snapped up just a week after being placed on the market in August.

Katie, 46, was previously forced out of the run-down house after it was repossessed.

This was after she failed to meet payments for two mortgages on the sprawling pad.

After multiple sales fell through, the mansion is now back on the market for a third time.

It was previously on sale for £1.5million, however the former Loose Women star will not see a penny of the proceeds.

Now, another estate agent has listed the mansion for £1.35million, a full £150K less than the last asking price.

As such, the property is being marketed for £650K less than the first price that was listed.

According to the website the house boasts nine bedrooms and four bathrooms, but is in need of “overall refurbishment”.

A spokesperson for Katie previously insisted: “The sale of the house isn’t Kate’s responsibility, she has no involvement in the sale, so therefore nothing to do with her.”

This comes after she Katie previously sparked rumours she’d become a mum again.

The former Eurovision hopeful previously shared a photo cuddling a newborn boy over the weekend.

She uploaded a snap of two tiny babies to Instagram as she declared: “my twins have arrived.”

The Sun learned the cherubs are, in fact, hyper-realistic reborn dolls, which come with a wide price range from £300 to a whopping £20,000.

A source close to Katie said: “She’s posing with two dolls. These ones are known as reborn dolls and, while they look incredibly lifelike, they’re not real.

Katie Price's missing millions

At the peak of her career Katie had an estimated fortune of £45m, thanks to her lucrative modelling career, book deals, and TV appearances.

The cash-strapped mum-of-five was first declared bankrupt in 2019 over unpaid debts of £3.2 million.

In a podcast interview earlier this year, she blamed her exes who include Peter AndreAlex Reid and Kieran Hayler and lawyers for her money woes.

She insisted that funding her exes’ lavish lifestyles with cars, watches, luxury holidays and homes left her finances in tatters.

She added: “I went through a breakdown, this is how mine started – lawyers and exes, that is my bankruptcy thing.

“And obviously a bit of HMRC.

“When I had my breakdown, if anyone has been depressed… I don’t know if you’ve ever had depression.

“It starts with depression and you just want to sleep all day and not talk to anyone, the phone would ring and you wouldn’t answer it.’

In March, Katie was declared bankrupt for a second time over an unpaid tax bill of £761,994.05.

The demand for payment was made by HMRC last October.

Katie was due to give evidence about her finances at the High Court but failed to turn up – holidaying in Cyprus with her new man JJ Slater instead.

Her Mucky Mansion was a bomb site for years after it was burgled, flooded and swamped by an overflowing septic tank.

She finally moved out at the end of May and is renting a four-bed mansion in Sussex.

“She’s doing it to get people interested in her IVF journey, which she’s made a TV show about for Channel 4. It’s out next year.

“It’s also part of her preparations for a future pregnancy, as she hopes to successfully welcome twins via a surrogate.”

Top tips to prepare your pets for fireworks including special sprays, calming apps and creating a safe space

WITH Bonfire Night and the Hindu Diwali festival of lights upon us, the skies will be bursting with fireworks – which is not great news for pets.

But there are steps you can take to help soothe their anxiety.

a person holding a brown and white dog 's head

Fireworks can cause anxiety in pets – but here’s how you can help them[/caption]

Animal expert Loni Loftus, director of the Fellowship of Animal Behaviour Clinicians, says it is vital that all pets are prepared for fireworks – not just those that have shown fearful behaviours.

She explains: “Pet owners must prepare, not least as animals’ stress can increase with repeated exposure.”

One option is a pet-calming app such as Zoundz, which is offering a free 14-day trial – and readers can save on an annual subscription with code zjblzdz at zoundzforpets.com.

Below, Loni shares her top tips to stop animals getting a fright over fireworks season.

PHEROMONE SPRAYS

THESE sprays are designed to replicate pheromones – which are chemicals that humans and animals release when they communicate.

They can enhance calmness, especially when combined with other measures.

Loni says: “Animals respond to pheromones in really different ways, but it’s definitely worth trying them, as it may make your pet feel safer and calmer.

“They’ve been formulated for diffusers and sprays that you can use around your home.

“The trick is to make sure you choose one that is appropriate for your species.”

BODY LANGUAGE

LONI recommends owners do all they can to create a relaxed atmosphere, including acting relaxed yourself.

She says: “Your body language makes a big difference.

Your body language makes a big difference to how your pet feels

“Avoid being stressed because animals will be pick up on that.

“They need a calm person to reassure them.

“Offering play and food can create a positive association between the sounds outside and having fun.

“Don’t leave your pet alone during the night.

“Your presence provides comfort and reassurance.”

VISIT THE VET

A TRIP to the vet could be the first step in helping to cure your pet’s fear of loud noises – but don’t wait until your pet is already distressed.

Loni explains: “Sensitivity to sound can be related to certain medical conditions, so it’s wise to check they are fully healthy.

Visit the vet before fireworks season to get help[/caption]

“If needed, your vet can refer to an accredited clinical animal behaviourist, who will work through treatments to reduce those fears.

“You don’t want them increasing year on year.”

ADD IN OTHER SOUNDS

SOMETIMES, insulation isn’t enough to block out the sound of the bangs.

If this is the case, owners can add other noises to mask the fireworks and help animals feel more settled.

Loni says: “People sometimes turn up the TV, but this all depends on what programmes are on.

“Steer clear of noises that are just as distressing.

“Apps such as Zoundz could be useful – they play calming sounds tailored to the requirements of different species.”

Zoundz, for managing pet anxiety, is currently offering a 14-day free trial ahead of bonfire night.

CREATE A SAFE SPACE

MAKING your house as safe a haven as possible is important.

So ensure windows and doors are locked on the night and that curtains are drawn.

Making your home safe for your pet is so important[/caption]

Loni says: “Create a quiet, comfortable space for your dog or cat, such as a crate or bed area that can be covered to mask sounds from outside.

“Add blankets, as animals burrow when scared. Fill it with toys, food and water.

“Get them used to this environment – don’t surprise them with it on the night.”

Sporting Lisbon fan reveals you’ve been pronouncing name of incoming Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim wrong this whole time

A SPORTING fan has revealed supporters have been getting Ruben Amorim’s name wrong.

The Sporting boss has been thrust into the spotlight after emerging as Manchester United’s No1 target to replace Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd are hot on the heels of Ruben Amorim[/caption]
a man in a black jacket is standing in front of a set of stairs .
A Sporting fan explained how his name is pronounced

Amorim is well known in his native Portugal after winning two league titles in four years.

His most recent success came last season which led to speculation he could join Liverpool or West Ham.

However he now looks destined for Man Utd and could be in the hotseat for Sunday’s clash against Chelsea.

But it appears many have been saying Amorim’s name incorrectly when discussing his possible switch to Old Trafford.

A Sporting fan spoke to SunSport ahead of their cup game against Nacional on Tuesday night and demonstrated how it should be pronounced.

Instead of Ru-ben A-mo-rim, he pronounced the name as “Hoo-ben Am-mo-reem”.

Fans better learn quickly as Amorim could be announced as Ten Hag’s successor soon, with Man Utd reportedly willing to trigger his £8.3million release clause.

Sporting acknowledged Man Utd have been in contact and even confirmed the official approach with a letter to the Portuguese stock exchange.

But they did not confirm whether they have accepted United’s advances.

Amorim himself gave little away when quizzed on a possible move after the Nacional game.

He refused to confirm if it was his last game as Sporting boss, and told reporters: “Manchester United is interested. But it’s my choice. Until everything is decided, we won’t be making any noise.

“I have nothing useful to say. I will take on whatever I want to do, as I have always done.

“I’m not going to talk about my contract, it’s a matter between me and Sporting. All the clauses that exist in a contract are included by the employer and the employee. What I can say is that the statement contains all the necessary information.

“I can’t promise anything. What I know is that I will be at training tomorrow and I will prepare for the game against Estrela da Amadora (on Friday).

“We have to wait a little bit more to explain everything I need to explain, then it will be very clear.

“It is my decision, I will tell everything to so we have to wait.”

Ruben Amorim is ‘Mourinho 2.0’ who turned Sporting from ‘walking dead’ into Portuguese champs… he can revive Man Utd

WHEN Ruben Amorim took charge of Sporting Lisbon in March 2020, one club official compared their situation to the “walking dead”, writes Jordan Davies.

Optimism and hope was at an all-time low.

But the Amorim-effect was almost instantaneous, guiding the Portuguese sleeping giants to their first league title for 19 years in 2020/21, losing just once and only conceding 20 goals.

Since then, Sporting have lifted another league title in 2023/24 – as well as two League Cups – and currently sit top with nine wins from nine this term.

He may be young, but Amorim already has an eye for rebuilding and revitalising fallen super powers with his infectious charisma and intense tactical philosophy that hardly ever wavers.

The “walking dead” at Manchester United must be praying for a similar sort of revival.

And they may just get it from one of the most talented young coaches on the continent – a man accustomed to breathing new life back into crumbling institutions such as Old Trafford.

Amorim has spent the last decade dreaming of one day gracing England’s Premier League, such was his admiration for an ex-United boss in Jose Mourinho growing up.

Often nicknamed ‘Mourinho 2.0’, Amorim spent a week with his coaching idol in an internship capacity at United’s Carrington training base in 2018, going on to cite him as his “reference point”.

United should not be expecting a mini-Mourinho, as Amorim said himself: “Mourinho is one of a kind. There won’t be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique.”

And yet, you cannot help but compare the two.

For all the mismanagement in the Old Trafford hot seats over the years, this would be a real get – finally a slap in the face United’s Prem rivals have no answer for.
