Organizer say Octobafest main concert cancellation had nothing to do with Walker Town gaffe

When the two-day main event of OktobaFest 2024, scheduled to take place this week on 26-27 October, was canceled earlier this month, there were mixed reactions on social media. Several revelers questioned why the event had to be canceled at the last minute. Instead, the main sponsor of the music, art, and cultural festival, East African Breweries Limited (EABL), through its flagship brand Tusker, announced that it would replace the main festival with mini-shows in various regions in the country. The announcement of OktobaFest's cancellation raised legitimate questions, given the hiccups experienced at yet another EABL-sponsored event that had just ended the previous week. EABL's spirits brand Johnnie Walker had just sponsored its annual Walker Town festival, which didn't go down well as expected with sound problems the main undoing on the second day, when American singer Lauryn Hill was due to perform. Those who voiced their opinions on social media, many argued that the cancellation of OktobaFest had everything to do with the earlier gaffes witnessed at Walker Town, which prompted the organizers to offer full refunds for day two tickets. But speaking candidly to Nairobi News in Kisumu over the weekend at the Da Club Place mini-show where Bensoul delivered an hour-long stellar performance to a mammoth crowd that included Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Tusker marketing manager Christine Kariuki dismissed the analogy.   Was the cancellation of the main Oktobafest Festival a consequence of what happened at the Walker Town Festival? The decision to deconstruct the main festival into mini-festivals was to open up access to the festival to more of our fans across the country. We recognize that Oktobafest is an important calendar event for our fans in Nairobi, so we have ensured that even though we are opening up the festival to the rest of the country, Nairobi still gets Oktobafest experience every weekend spread across the city. Replacing the main event with mini-shows, does it offer the same experience as that of curating a festival? Tusker Octobafest has grown over the years and we believe now is the right time to open it up to even more people across the country. We're reimagining Octobafest from one big moment to many moments. Is this the new plan for the future, to have mini-shows all over the country instead of one festival? Oktobafest is an annual festival. The format of the festival may be different each year, but we remain committed to providing a platform to celebrate our beer and culture each year. Last year's festival featured acts from East Africa, will there be such acts at this year's mini-shows? As Oktobafest is an annual event, each year is an opportunity to take a different approach to our execution to give our fans a new experience every year. This year's festival came at a time when the Kenyan entertainment scene had grown exponentially and we saw more Kenyans consuming a lot of local content, which informed our decision to have an all-Kenyan Oktobafest. This is not to say that you will not see more East African acts at future Oktobafests. So far, six Oktobafest mini-shows have taken place across the country in Nairobi, Eldoret, Juja, Thika, Nanyuki, and Kisumu, with four more scheduled for Saturday this weekend in Kiambu, Ngong, Ruaka, Karatina and Mombasa.

JB Gill and Lauren Oakley’s Strictly dance this weekend revealed after Amy Dowden was forced to pull out of show

Amy Dowden was previously forced to pull out of the hit BBC show after she collapsed backstage.

The popular professional dancer previously returned to Strictly Come Dancing after her battle with stage three breast cancer.

Bosses confirmed that she will be replaced by Lauren Oakley after she was rushed to hospital after she filmed the main show.

The programme previously came under fire from fans as JLS star JB Gill was made to stand alone on the results show.

Now, his next dance – and first with Lauren Oakley – has been revealed on the spin-off, It Takes Two.

The theme for the week is ‘Icons’ and Fleur East ran through the music and each artist that will be featured this weekend.

As part of the BBC Two show, the former X Factor runner-up revealed the songs and type of dance for each couple.

She revealed that JB Gill and Lauren will dance the Couples Choice, to music by smash-hit singer, Bruno Mars.

Going through the list, she explained: “At five, an out of this world Bruno Mars medley for JB and Lauren.

“The American singer’s 24k Magic, put a spell on the 2018 Grammys, scooping seven awards.

“Will his [JB’s] own brand of Uptown Funk bring treasure to their Couple’s Choice?”

Over the weekend, an ambulance was called to Elstree Studios where Strictly is filmed and the 34-year-old was brought to hospital by medics.

A spokesperson for Amy said: “Amy was feeling unwell and so an ambulance was called as a precaution.

“She is feeling much better and would like to thank the Strictly family for their love and concern.

“We request Amy’s privacy in matters of health is kindly respected.”

Strictly Amy's cancer 'nightmare'

The Sun's Jamie Downham takes a look at the beloved Strictly star's ups and downs...

AS Strictly Come Dancing viewers know, you’ll struggle to catch Amy Dowden without a huge smile on her face.

But recently the Welsh star – one the best-rated Ballroom and Latin American professional dancers the UK has ever produced – has suffered a string of “nightmare” blows to her health.

She was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May last year and underwent a full mastectomy, before having chemotherapy towards the end of 2023.

However, she later reported docs had found a clot on her lung, telling fans sadly: “Unfortunately I’ve had another nightmare this week.”

Nonetheless, brave Amy, seen here dancing with James Bye, made an epic return to Strictly the following month with an appearance that left many viewers in floods tears.

As 2024 dawned, she admitted: “I feel I was robbed of the year I had planned and reflecting for me makes me upset and angry.”

However, she was soon smiling again. Amy, her hair starting to grow back after her cancer treatment, was seen messing around with her co-stars Dianne Buswell and Vito Coppola on the Strictly tour earlier this month.

And despite another spell in hospital in February, she still mustered a cheeriness many would struggle for, telling fans: “The sun is shining – and I certainly can’t wait for Spring.”

And we certainly can’t wait to see you dancing again, Amy…

Later, a spokesperson for the show said: “Amy Dowden MBE is doing much better and the Strictly family send her love and wish her well.

“She is delighted that fellow professional dancer, Lauren Oakley, is able to step in for rehearsals and to perform in Saturday’s show for JB Gill’s Couple’s Choice dance.”

They added: “We are all hopeful that Amy will be back to dance with JB next week.”

Stark warning to parents as harrowing pictures show girl covered in blood after family dog bit her HEAD in horror attack

HARROWING pictures have shown a little girl covered in blood and left with horrific injuries after she was mauled by her family dog.

Police were called to a property in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, on October 25 after reports that a young child was attacked by a two-year-old Doberman.

The horrific injuries saw the youngster require surgery[/caption]

The dog was laid on the sofa and the girl tried to kiss it, but the animal reacted and mauled the child’s head.

Horrific photos of the little girl from after the attack show the side of her face and ears covered in blood after the savage attack.

The youngster was rushed to hospital where she required surgery.

The dog responsible for causing injury to the child was seized by South Yorkshire Police officers and will be put to sleep.

As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach again this year, police have warned dog owners and parents to be alert.

Sergeant Matt Duffy said: “We are continuing to see children bitten by dogs across South Yorkshire.

“We are working hard to reduce the risk from dangerous dogs to our communities, but we need your help.

“You know your family, you know your dog.

“As we approach a time of year where things are slightly different, people are in costumes and you may have more visitors to your home, please take action.

“Also, please remember that when a dog has been exposed to stress or anxiety, it may take a few days for the effects to end.

“It is important you are vigilant and provide your dog with a safe space.”

South Yorkshire Police said they received 126 reports of dangerous dogs between October 28 and November 8, with 34 reports involving a person being seriously injured.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach, we’re releasing photos of a child mauled by a family dog to urge parents to act.

“As a busy and ‘different’ period approaches, please be aware that any dog can bite and cause serious injuries and you are more likely to be bitten by a familiar dog within your home.

“Urging parents to act, we are sharing photographs of a child recently mauled by a family pet; this can happen to anyone, any dog has the ability to cause harm.”

What is the Dangerous Dogs Act?

After eleven horrific attacks in 1991, Home Secretary Kenneth Baker promised “to rid the country of the menace of these fighting dogs” by introducing the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The law is often considered controversial.

This is because it focuses on a dog’s breed or looks instead of an individual dog’s behaviour.

Many believe this fails to stem the rise of dog attacks.

According to the RSPCA, over a third of the people killed by dogs since the act was brought in were attacked by legal breeds.

UK’s most dangerous areas for dog attacks

By SARAH GREALISH

THE UK’s fatal dog attack hotspot has been revealed.

Britain is battling an epidemic of vicious maulings, with incidents last year hitting a 40-year high.

In the last ten years there have been a whopping 41 deaths as a result of vicious hound attacks – and ten of these took place in the last year.

Now, using the latest ONS statistics, The Sun has revealed which county in the UK has seen the most fatalities in the last decade.

From 2013 – present Yorkshire has seen five deaths from dog attacks – making it the most deadly area in Britain.

July 2022 was the most recent fatality – when Joanne Robinson, 43, was savaged by two dogs at a home in Rotherham.

Her boyfriend Jamie Stead, 42, also suffered devastating injuries to his face, hands and chest as he tried to pull the animals off her.

And in September 2020, Elon Jase Ellis-Joynes was only 12 days old when he was fatally bitten by his family’s Chow Chow-cross called Teddy.

Merseyside and South Wales come in joint second for the most deathly dog attacks – with four in each county.

In October 2022 Ann Dunn, 65, died at her home in the Vauxhall area of Liverpool following a horror involving five American bulldogs.

Just two months later, retired nurse Shirley Patrick, 83, passed away in hospital 17 days after suffering “life-threatening injuries” from a dog in her home.

And down the road in November 2021, schoolboy Jack Lis, 10, was mauled to death by an American Bully XL called ‘Beast’ at a friend’s home.

Manchester and Lancashire are the third worst areas for fatalities after seeing two deaths each in the last ten years.

I spent over £40k getting my nails done – trolls say I look like Edward Scissorhands but I say they’re worth every penny

A MAN has revealed that he has been nicknamed Edward Scissorhands after spending over £40,000 getting his nails done.

Lash technician Ryan’s nails are always four to five inches long, and he only ever cuts them to get a new set put on.

He said that people are always so impressed that he can crack eggs with his long nails[/caption]

His nail appointments can last up to eight hours, and he spends around £760 every two weeks on his nails.

The 25-year-old, from New York, has been getting his nails done extremely long for over four years, and said his clients are often worried that he won’t be able to do their lashes properly because of his nails.

Ryan said that the household tasks he struggles with the most are washing small cups or getting into small crevices whilst cleaning.

“I would say it’s a challenge because it requires patience, and it probably just takes a little bit longer than the average person, by like a minute”, he told Truly.

However, despite the challenges, Ryan said that he can do everything anyone else can with his nails, even cracking an egg.

“People are always amazed that I can crack these”, he said.

Ryan said that the inspiration for his unconventional nails came from his grandma who always had very long nails when he was growing up.

He said he loved the sound they made, as well as the crazy designs she had on each nail.

“I always knew that one day I would do my nails like that.”

Ryan often posts videos of himself doing basic tasks like tying his shoelaces or opening doors, and the videos often go viral, racking up millions of views.

Many are impressed by Ryan’s ability to be able to carry out tasks with his huge nails, but he has also faced lots of criticism from trolls.

“Everybody is just outraged that a boy has such long nails”, he said.

Comments from trolls have ranged from saying that the nails look like “overpriced garbage” to likening Ryan to the titular character in Tim Burton‘s classic film Edward Scissorhands.

“You can never compare these nails to garbage, garbage will never cost $1000”, he said.

Hitting back at the trolls, Ryan said that he thinks his nails are “beautiful”, adding that just because they are not to everyone’s taste does not mean that there is anything wrong with them.

Ryan said that a lot of people think he gets his nails done for “attention”, but he said that this is not the case, and he just thinks that they are beautiful.

He added that he doesn’t think that he will ever go back to having short nails.

“It would probably have to be a life or death situation”, he said.

Ryan said that he thinks his nails have helped his confidence, as he can express himself better with them.

“Haters are what has pushed me to keep going and get to where I’m at.”

Dianne Buswell is currently paired up with comedian Chris McCausland.

The duo is currently one of the favourites to life the Glitterball trophy, which some believe could be 35-year-old Dianne’s ‘last hurrah’.

Writing on social media, one fan said: “I would say Dianne might leave this year, especially if she wins.”

Someone else replied: “Now that you’ve said it, it does seem likely that this could be Dianne’s last hurrah.

“Not only because of her massively popular partnership with Chris but also because she’s been getting a lot of prominent roles in the pro numbers.”

Another reason fans think Dianne is set to bow out is her 2025 tour with fellow professional Vito Coppola.

Announcing her new adventure outside of Strictly with her co-star earlier this year, Dianne wrote on Instagram: “We are so, so excited to finally introduce you all to our brand new show DIANNE & VITO ‘Red Hot and Ready’ presented by Burn the Floor.

“We’ve been working on this project for such a long time and we cannot wait to share this special show with the whole of the UK in 2025!”

But some fans were not impressed with the announcement from Dianne, who joined Strictly in 2017.

Many pointed out that out of 27 locations revealed so far, there are no shows scheduled in Scotland or Ireland.

One wrote: “So exciting!! However it can’t really be considered a uk tour without a Scotland date.”

Off the dancefloor Dianne is in a relationship with YouTube star Joe Sugg, who she met when they were partnered for the 2018 series.
