Saga cruise passengers relive storm HELL with 700ft ship ‘swaying like a pendulum’ as they said their last goodbyes
SAGA cruise passengers have relived their storm hell and admitted they said their final goodbyes after the 700ft ship began “swaying like a pendulum”.
Spirit of Discovery was on a 14-night voyage around the Canary Islands when it was smashed by 30ft waves and force 11 winds in the Bay of Biscay on November 4, 2023.
Carol Lake recalled the moment she thought she ‘wasn’t going to make it’[/caption] The 63-year-old said outside in the storm was like a ‘horror film’[/caption] Some 30ft waves battered against the side of the ship as it was halted in the waters[/caption] One person died after the Spirit of Discovery was caught in a storm[/caption]The storm last year hospitalised eight people when the ship finally docked at Portsmouth – one of whom sadly died from their injuries.
Travellers onboard have since spoken out about the “nightmare” they lived through.
Carol Lake, 63, recalled thinking she “wasn’t going to make it” as crews asked her to return to her cabin when towering waves started to batter the vessel.
She told The Independent: “I’d packed my bag early but realised no one in the Bay of Biscay was coming to rescue us if we went over and thought for the first time I wasn’t going to make it.
“I have had a good life and thought ‘this is it then’ as I could hear others in alarm around me.
“It was like a horror movie outside with the waves going up so high.”
Jan Bendall, 75, who was on the cruise with her husband, told how the captain came over the boat’s speaker and told guests to “remain seated or lie down”.
She said the ship was halted and stationary for around 15 hours “in the middle of the storm”.
She told BBC: “[We were] holding on for dear life. It was quite frightening.”
Mrs Bendall went on to say part of the dining room was converted into “a makeshift medical area” and passengers were told to stay in their cabins for the rest of Saturday and all of Sunday.
Pictures from the cruise ship show broken glass from a balcony after the storm[/caption] A bookshelf inside the vessel has been shaken around tipping all the books out[/caption] Guest rooms are left in a state during force 11 winds[/caption] Lobby lamps are knocked over in the weather conditions[/caption]An interim report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) found that shortly before the incident, the Spirit of Discovery, operated by Saga Cruises, had to cancel a visit to Las Palmas as the weather worsened.
It was instead heading towards La Corona where the port was closed because of the weather conditions.
Cruise crews then decided to return to the UK when the ship’s propulsion safety system was activated – causing it to veer suddenly to the left and bring the vessel to a sudden halt.
The MAIB report states that there were 943 passengers and 503 crew on board at the time.
It said: “At about 12.30 on 4 November, 2023, the passenger vessel Spirit of Discovery lost propulsion in heavy weather while crossing the Bay of Biscay.
“This led to the vessel moving violently while the crew restarted the vessel’s propulsion.
“The propulsion issues, storm force conditions and vessel motions continued until the following morning when Spirit of Discovery was able to continue its passage.
“During this period over 100 passengers were injured. Eight of the seriously injured passengers were taken directly to hospital on arrival at Portsmouth, England, one of whom later died from their injuries.”
It continued: “The MAIB’s investigation has considered all aspects of the accident to determine the causes and circumstances of Spirit of Discovery’s loss of propulsion in heavy weather and the on-board response, including analysis of the vessel’s intended passage, preparations for operating in heavy weather, the on-board response to passenger injuries and damage and the medical treatment of injured passengers.”
The investigation is nearly complete and a full report will then be issued.
Saga Cruises said in a statement: “Spirit of Discovery was sadly caught in the challenging weather conditions this weekend, as she started her return to the UK.
“The ship remained safe at all times but, due to the impact of the storm, some guests sustained injuries.
“All were treated immediately by onboard medical staff.
“While the weather is clearly beyond our control, we want to offer our sincere apologies to all those affected who are now safely back, having sailed home in calmer seas.”
A spokeswoman for Saga said all guests on the trip had been offered a full refund and added: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with the family of our guest who died following the storm in the Bay of Biscay last year.
“We are continuing to work with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, supporting their investigation.”
Spirit of Discovery was on a 14-night Canary Island Quintet cruise, which departed on 24 October last year.
However, after 10 days of smooth sailing, the crew decided to cancel its final call to Las Palmas and continue to La Coruna in northern Spain to get ahead of the approaching storm.
Key findings from the report
AN interim report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has revealed one of the eight passengers seriously injured in the storm has died.
The report also found:
- There were 943 passengers and 503 crew on board at the time
- Spirit of Discovery lost propulsion in heavy weather
- The cruise ship moved ‘violently’ and issues continued until the following morning
- Over 100 people were injured
- Eight were taken to hospital with serious injuries once the vessel docked in Portsmouth
- One person died from their injuries
- Full report will consider the ship’s preparations for operating in heavy weather, the on-board response to passenger injuries and damage and the medical treatment of injured passengers
The investigation is nearly complete and a full report will then be issued.

Newcastle vs Chelsea preview
Well this feels familiar…
Newcastle United and Chelsea clash for the second time in less than a week. Only this time it takes place at St James’ Park for a place in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup.
Cole Palmer scored his seventh goal of the season as Enzo Maresca’s side beat the Magpies at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to move into fifth position.
Chelsea have now won seven of their last nine matches in all competitions, with their only loss a respectable 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.
They have scored in their last 13 matches in all competitions, while they’ve managed a whopping 19 in their last seven Stamford Bridge fixtures.
The pair met in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup last season with the London outfit edging it out on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The Blues went on to reach the final only to suffer a second defeat to Liverpool in the same fixture in three years when Virgil van Dijk netted an extra-time winner at Wembley.
As for hosts Newcastle, it’s not been a particularly enjoyable period.
Hopes at the start of this season were high that they could challenge for Champions League qualification, but they’ve not won in the Premier League since beating Wolves on 15 September, drawing two and losing three of their last five games.
Also beaten finalists in 2023, Eddie Howe will be desperate for a reaction from his side and will perhaps risk selecting his strongest XI ahead of Saturday’s visit of Arsenal.

2+ Goals
Given Chelsea’s appetite for goals, I expect the Blues to score at least twice on Wednesday.
As mentioned above, Enzo Maresca’s side have scored in their last 13 matches in all competitions and haven’t blanked in any of their competitive away games this season – scoring 2+ on three occasions.
They boast the highest xG from open play of any side in the Premier League (15.25) and that should stand them in good stead against a Newcastle side who’ve shipped 140 goal attempts in nine league outings this season – the sixth-highest in the Premier League.
- Chelsea to score over 1.5 goals at 21/20 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE
Hit the net
This tip will of course depend on Enzo Maresca’s team selection, but Pedro Neto could find himself on the scoresheet or in the assist column this week – especially if the game is similar to the encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The Portuguese international fired off FIVE shots against Newcastle on Sunday and struck the woodwork with one of those. He had seven touches in the opposition penalty area and created three chances for his colleagues – assisting the opener for Nicolas Jackson.
- Pedro Neto to score or assist at 29/20 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE

I have no space for a tumble dryer or dehumidifier – my genius airer hack takes up no extra room & dries clothes quickly
LIVING in a small house or apartment often presents unique challenges, one of the most common being the struggle to find sufficient space to dry clothes.
This issue becomes particularly big during the winter months when trying to avoid turning on the heating can lead to increased humidity levels.
A homeowner has revealed their struggle for drying clothes in a small home[/caption]One homeowner recently shared their struggle with this very issue on the online forum Mumsnet.
The individual, who chose to remain anonymous, described their difficulties with drying clothes in a confined space.
They asked fellow Mumsnet users for advice: “Any ideas for drying laundry very fast and with limited space?”
The poster elaborated on their situation: “I cannot have a tumble dryer. I do not have space for an airer. I cannot spread my laundry due to limited space.
“The place is not sunny or airy. I can only put my laundry in a basket or something and need to dry it there.”
Many people in similar situations quickly offered their suggestions.
One user recommended a dehumidifier, noting: “A smaller space like a small room or cupboard works best.
“However, no wet clothes will dry if they’re in a basket; air needs to move between them.”
Others suggested utilising the bathroom, with some placing an airer in the bath.
One user shared their method: “My airer sits in the bath. I plug the dehumidifier into a power socket on the landing, and the cable is long enough to wheel it into the bathroom.”
Another added: “If you have a bathtub or a shower with a shower rail, hang your laundry on hangers on the rail.
“Buy a dehumidifier (approx £140), which will dry your clothes in a couple of hours at a very inexpensive rate, plus it will dry your home and therefore heat it up.”
Some users simply recommended visiting a local laundrette.
One wrote: “That would be your best option. If you don’t have that option, then do a second spin when the wash cycle is finished.
Warnings
“Hang T-shirts, skirts, etc., on hangers and hang them in doorways. You can iron clothes when they are still a bit damp.”
However, it’s important to be aware of the safety concerns associated with using a dehumidifier in the bathroom.
While dehumidifiers can be effective in reducing excess moisture and helping to dry clothes, they must be used with caution to prevent potential hazards.
Bathrooms are high-moisture environments, which can pose a risk when using electrical appliances which is why it is important to ensure that your dehumidifier is specifically designed for use in damp areas, and has the appropriate safety certifications.
Many suggested using a airer and placing it in the bath[/caption]Individuals must avoid placing the dehumidifier in areas where it could get wet, such as near a shower or bath.
Those using a dehumidifier must make sure that the power cord is kept away from areas that can get wet, as well as areas where it could easily be tripped over.
If there are children in the household, make sure the dehumidifier is placed out of their reach to prevent tampering or accidental tipping.
Biggest mistakes people make when using a dehumidifier
Chris Michael, Managing Director of Meaco shared the mistakes exclusively with Fabulous.
Not cleaning the dust filter
Regularly cleaning the dust filter is essential to ensure that your dehumidifier works at its best. A clean filter allows air to flow freely, improving the unit’s efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and extending the lifespan of the appliance.
Not setting the humidistat correctly
A dehumidifier uses a built-in humidistat to measure humidity. It enables you to set a target humidity level for your dehumidifier to maintain. The dehumidifier will work towards reaching this target before turning off, only switching on again if it detects an increase. For UK households a comfortable target humidity is between 50% and 55%rh (relative humidity). It’s unnecessary to set the humidity much lower than this. Doing so makes the machine work harder for longer when its not needed.
Getting the wrong size for the property
Getting the wrong-sized dehumidifier for the job will mean a household is either wasting energy or cannot remove moisture effectively from the home. A 10L or 12L compressor dehumidifier is suitable for use in up to a three-bedroom house suffering with mild damp. In larger properties or for greater damp needs, larger 20L or 25L dehumidifiers should be considered.

Man Utd vs Leicester preview
Managerless Manchester United will look to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup when they host Leicester at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
The Red Devils axed Erik ten Hag earlier this week following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham, which left them in 14th position with just three wins from their opening nine league matches.
United have their second lowest points tally after nine games, whilst they have only beaten Fulham, Southampton, Barnsley and Brentford in their 13 competitive matches this season.
Only Southampton and Crystal Palace have scored fewer league goals this season, while nobody has a bigger negative differential between expected goals and goals scored.
Can Ruud van Nistelrooy remedy that?
The iconic forward, who joined the club as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, has been named as interim manager until a long-term replacement is identified.
The Dutchman enjoyed a successful spell at PSV, winning the Dutch Cup, the Dutch Super Cup, finishing second in the league and ending his time in Holland with a +66 goal difference.
So a home tie against promoted Leicester should – on paper at least – prove a good opportunity for Van Nistelrooy to start his tenure in a positive fashion.
Steve Cooper’s priority will be Premier League survival and he’s likely to make several changes ahead of the weekend’s six-pointer against Ipswich Town.
The Foxes followed successive league wins with a disappointing 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest at the King Power, while victories at Old Trafford have been few and far between with Leicester having won ONCE in their last 14 visits.

Like a rash
Erik ten Hag fielded a pretty strong starting XI when hammering Barnsley in the last round, and I’d expect the same again given he’s odds-on favourite to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked.
Marcus Rashford scored twice that evening when spearheading the attack, and should be capable of getting on the scoresheet again.
He’s netted four goals this year with 75% of those arriving in cup competitions and he’s got a good record in this fixture having scored eight goals in 16 games against Leicester – the highest tally of any club he’s faced.
- Marcus Rashford to score at 13/8 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE
Shots
As mentioned above, goal attempts haven’t been the issue for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United. In fact, they boast the sixth-highest in the league with 130 attempts in nine matches – averaging a chance every 6.8 minutes.
They also have the sixth-highest xG of any side in the division and that should put them in good stead against a weakened Leicester side who rank third for xGC (expected goals conceded) – only Ipswich and Southampton have a higher xGC. They’ve also conceded 168 shots in 9 games – the highest of any Premier League side at an average of 18 per game.

Emmerdale fans work out exactly when Amelia Spencer was doomed after Daisy Campbell was axed
EMMERDALE fans have worked out the clues that hinted at one character’s upcoming exit.
Emmerdale fans believe they’ve worked out the moments where it went wrong for character Amelia Spencer, after the confirmation that actress Daisy Campbell has been axed from soap after 13 years.
Fans think they’ve worked out when the decision was made by Emmerdale bosses to axe Amelia Spencer from the ITV soap[/caption] Actress Daisy Campbell confirmed the news that she will exit the ITV soap in scenes shown at the end of the year[/caption]On a digital forum, ITV viewers have shared their theories on the moment it all went wrong for Amelia Spencer as they praised the decision to cut her character.
One Emmerdale fan wrote: “I wish her the best, but this was long overdue.
“They’re doing quite well at getting rid of the dead wood lately.”
Another shared: “Wish her all the best but had a feeling she wouldn’t be in it for much longer after Dan’s exit.”
“They turned her too nasty over the past year so sadly I didn’t see a long term future for her. Feel sorry for Sam, he’s lost his son, his father and now his grandchild,” said a third.
In recent storylines, Amelia has been seen getting into a relationship with abuser Tom King.
Amelia is unaware of Tom’s abuse of estranged wife Belle Dingle, which led to the breakdown of their marriage.
The new relationship comes after she broke up with Noah Dingle and took a job as a barmaid behind the bar at The Woolpack.
As the news broke of her exit, Daisy has admitted that she’s been struggling behind the scenes since bosses pulled her into a covert meeting to let her know her character would be exiting the ITV soap.
She was told her last scenes in Emmerdale would be shown on screen just before Christmas.
Her parents previously left the dales and the actress has been told by bosses they ran out of storylines for her character.
Reflecting on the news, she told The Mirror: “It wasn’t my choice to leave Emmerdale and it was a shock at first.
“Being in Emmerdale is all I have ever known. I’ve spent the whole of my childhood growing up in the soap and it felt daunting.”
Daisy also revealed she was told of the decision to axe her character by show bosses back in May, but took some time to come to terms with their decision.
She added: “Once they explained, I totally got it. Amelia isn’t part of the Dingles, her dad has left, Samson has gone now and she doesn’t have any family.
“There is nowhere to take Amelia and I understand that. I feel incredibly lucky to have been in the soap for 13 years and to have been handed so many opportunities at such a young age.”
Recent storylines for Amelia have seen her dating abuser Tom King, after his separation from wife Belle Dingle[/caption] Daisy Cambell described the decision for her exit as ‘daunting’ after she grew up on screen on the ITV soap[/caption]Man Utd vs Leicester: Get £40 in free bets and bonuses to spend on the Carabao Cup with BetMGM

A British girl has died in Rome after eating in a pizza restaurant[/caption]Emergency responders rushed to the scene and took her to San Camillo Hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities are now investigating if the food that was served at the restuaunt caused the fatal allergic reaction.
The family insisted their daughter was extremely vigilant about her allergy and typically informed restaurants about her dietary requirements.
The tragedy happened just hours after the family reached Rome for a vacation.
They decided to have lunch at a restuaunt in the Gianicolense district of the Italian capital – and ordered a few slices of pizza and drinks along with some dessert.
