Strictly star Amy Dowden could be forced to quit show after dramatically collapsing backstage during filming

STRICTLY dancer Amy Dowden could be forced to quit the contest after collapsing while filming Saturday night’s show and being rushed to hospital.

The Welsh pro, who has Crohn’s Disease and has been battling cancer for almost 18 months, was attended by paramedics at Elstree Studios.

Her condition was so serious that the fire service were called and specialist equipment used to help her to an ambulance while keeping her completely flat.

Amy, 34, collapsed after she performed her dance with celebrity partner — JLS singer JB Gill, 37 — during the main show.

She was unable to appear in the recording of the live show, which aired last night.

Instead hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly explained to viewers at home: “Before we get started, Amy isn’t able to be with us for tonight’s show.”

JB was seen standing alone on the staircase, and as he was announced as going through to next week, he smiled and said “Thank you” to cheers.

A Strictly insider said: “Amy was obviously in huge distress.

“Everyone around her was equally upset because they felt so helpless.

“JB had to be given a hug.

“Even the medic who first attended to Amy needed support and consolation.

“The only thing they could do was try to get her to hospital as quickly and safely as possible.”

For the Halloween Special, Amy and JB dressed as scarecrows and performed to Dancing In The Moonlight by Toploader at 7.18pm.

It’s understood Amy started to feel ill minutes after she and JB received a 32 out of 40 score from the judges at 7.25pm.

Amy cheered and jumped up and down when Motsi gave them a 9, and screamed when she got an 8 from Anton.

Amy was still seen standing and smiling with JB in the final line-up at around 8.10pm.

By 9pm an ambulance had been called and at 9.50pm the fire service were also contacted to assist.

Amy has talked at length about the excruciating pain she suffers as a result of her Crohn’s, an inflammatory disease of the digestive system often brought on by stress.

He spokesman said yesterday: “Amy was feeling unwell and so an ambulance was called as a precaution.

“She’s feeling much better and would like to thank the Strictly family for their love and concern.”

‘Contingencies in place’

Yesterday morning the BBC released a statement saying: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Amy Dowden was unable to be in tonight’s results show.”

The BBC did not give any further detail with a spokeswoman adding only: “We have contingencies in place for all eventualities.”

No pro dancer has ever dropped out of Strictly in its 20 years.

Amy is hugely popular with fans who would hate to see her having to leave the show.

Celebrities have had to leave — including comedian and actor Robert Webb who had a serious heart condition in the 2021 series.

It could mean that another pro may be brought in to replace Amy — either permanently or temporarily — if she is not considered well enough to return to rehearsals this week.

JLS star JB may decide he can not continue without Amy.

An insider added: “They are incredibly close.

“She has helped him remain in the top band of the scoreboard since this series started.”

The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed: “We were called just after 9pm on Saturday to attend a medical emergency at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood.

“An ambulance was sent to the scene.

“One patient, an adult female, was transported to Barnet Hospital for further care.”

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark Barber said: “Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 9.50pm to Elstree Studios in Borehamwood.

“We assisted with the transfer of a female patient to an ambulance.”

Amy, from Caerphilly in South Wales, has been battling Crohn’s disease since she was a teenager.

She has been taken to hospital more than a hundred times because of it.

In a BBC documentary in 2020 she revealed the bittersweet secret that joining Strictly could have made her dreams come true — but losing her spot in the line-up would represent her worst nightmare.

I live in fear that what I love the most could be taken away

Amy Dowden

Amy said: “Strictly has been more than a dance show to me, it got me through the darkest times of my illness.

“For me it was a big inspiration to keep me dancing.

“Dancing has pulled me through my Crohn’s but it’s a battle.

“I live in fear that what I love the most could be taken away.”

In one scene in the Beeb documentary Amy was seen collapsing a day after completing the last Strictly tour, and ended up being rushed to hospital.

She said: “To the public watching me with all our make-up, fake tan, glitz, glamour and spotlights, it’s a different world.

“I don’t think they could ever imagine this could be me the next day.

“I knew things weren’t right but your body goes: ‘Right you’ve got to get through this, you don’t want to let anyone down, you can do this’ And you can just push yourself through anything.’

“I can’t think of how many times I’ve been in hospital.

“It’s got to be at least over 100 times.

“When I was 18 or 19 it was every month at least for a week.”

‘What a difference a year can make’

Before her return to Strictly, Amy also faced months of cancer treatment and was forced to step back from the series last year.

She revealed touching messages from fans help her to stay on the show, explaining: “I get so many messages about my smile.

“I always look back and think, ‘Gosh, this time last year I was having chemo, this time last year I was in hospital with a blood clot’.”

She added: “What a difference a year can make.

“I get messages every day from people saying, ‘I’m going through chemo and you’re my hope’, or, ‘Because of you I’ve checked myself and I found a lump’, or something like this.

“I’m just grateful to be back and be in the position I am.”

Amy was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023.

Just a couple of months later she was told she had another type of cancer, which was found elsewhere in the body.

Following a mastectomy, she was told the tumours had spread and was diagnosed with cancer for the second time that July.

And in August 2024, her return to Strictly was thrown into chaos when doctors raised concerns about abnormalities in her breast following a check-up.

Amy later received the all-clear from her consultant.

YOU NEED:

  • 200g frozen blueberries
  • 2 level tbsp sweetener granules
  • Finely grated zest of ½ lemon and a squeeze of its juice
  • 3 reduced-fat digestive biscuits
  • 1 level tbsp low-fat spread
  • 50g plain extra-light soft cheese
  • 450g fat-free natural Greek-style yoghurt

METHOD: Tip the blueberries into a small, non-stick saucepan with half a level tablespoon of sweetener and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Put over a medium-low heat and cook gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring from time to time, until the blueberries have mostly collapsed and their juices are reduced and syrupy. Set aside to cool completely.

While the berries are cooling, put the biscuits in a sealable food bag and bash it with a rolling pin until they are a sandy texture.

Melt the spread in a small, non-stick saucepan over a low heat then stir in the biscuit crumbs.

Divide the crumbs between six small tumblers or ramekins, then spread the mixture evenly with the back of a spoon.

Beat the rest of the sweetener, cheese, yoghurt and most of the lemon zest with an electric hand whisk until smooth.

  • 160g pot fat-free, no added sugar cherry yoghurt

Take the bowl off the heat and sieve the flour over the top.

Using a metal spoon and a figure-of-eight motion, fold the flour and the almond extract into the mixture, then spoon it into a small non-stick loaf tin.

Bake for ten to 12 minutes or until golden, then leave to cool in the tin.

Halve the sponge lengthways and spread with the jam, then cut the sponge into small cubes and arrange in four tall glasses.

Add the lemon curd, whisk again, then pour in the milk and mix briefly.

Pour just-boiled water into the tin to come about halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

Bake for 30-35 minutes until the brûlées are just set with a wobble.

Allow to cool, then chill in the fridge overnight.

Just before serving, evenly scatter the rest of the sugar over the brûlées.

‘Something is not right’ – Ex-Premier League referee ‘amazed’ West Ham penalty against Man Utd was given

I AM amazed referee David Coote overturned his decision — a penalty should not have been awarded.

It was nothing more than a coming together and resulted in a game-changing decision that cost Manchester United.

Match Stats

Danny Ings lost the ball and then Matthijs de Ligt made minimal contact with the West Ham striker’s shin.

The Premier League’s Match Centre said Man Utd defender De Ligt made “sufficient contact” on Ings to merit a penalty.

But it is a contact sport — this should never be enough for a foul.

Coote had a great view and he was initially spot on not to award a penalty.

Referees’ chief Howard Webb does not want VAR intervening with subjective calls that are not clear and obvious.

This was a classic case of that — the incident was re-refereed.

VAR Michael Oliver recommended a pitch-side review, then Coote crumbled and changed his decision, like so many other referees do in that situation.

Something is not right with the training and education at the PGMOL.

Premier League statement

The Premier League released a statement on the decision after the match.

It read: “The referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for a challenge by de Ligt on Ings.

“The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”

King Charles launches ANOTHER side hustle as he flogs £250 bottles of whisky made with barley from his Highgrove estate

KING Charles is flogging £250 bottles of whisky made with barley from his country estate.

His Highgrove Royal Gardens Single Malt is a limited edition of 400.

It is the most expensive whisky being sold by the estate, with the next one costing £130.

Each is numbered and comes in a gift box featuring a watercolour by His Majesty of the residence near Tetbury, Gloucs.

It promises connoisseurs a vanilla and orange peel nose, a hint of candied ginger and a lightly spiced finish.

The whisky is made by the award-winning Cotswolds Distillery in Stourton, Shipston-on-Stour, just across the county border in Warwickshire.

It is aged in premium active ex-red wine and first-fill bourbon casks at the distillery, the only one in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It uses heritage Plumage Archer barley grown at the Highgrove Estate and traditionally floor-malted at Britain’s oldest working maltings.

The maltings, in Warminister, Wilts, is where the barley was first created in 1906.

The use of Plumage Archer “yields a subtle but unique twist” on the spirit, according to the royal estate, which the King rents from the Duchy of Cornwall — now controlled by his eldest son and heir, Prince William.

The estate shop offers a range of whisky and gin, often trading on their locally sourced or organic credentials.

Arsenal v Liverpool player stats: shots, passes, tackles and key data from crunch Premier League clash

ARSENAL twice squandered the lead against Liverpool as they dropped two crucial points in the title race.

Bukayo Saka fired the Gunners into an early lead, tearing Andy Robertson apart before blasting past a helpless Caoimhin Kelleher.

Mo Salah rescued a point for the Reds with his late leveller[/caption]

Virgil van Dijk headed the Reds level before Mikel Merino put his new side back in front with an emphatic bullet header of his own.

But Mo Salah rescued a point for Arne Slot’s men on the counterattack with nine minutes left.

And the stats prove the 2-2 draw was a very fair result.

That is because both sides managed nine shots in the match – with Liverpool edging their attempts on target by four to three.

Liverpool had 55 per cent of the ball with 16 tackles to Arsenal’s 17 and 14 fouls apiece.

Arsenal, however, will regret only managing one corner in the match.

Of course, Gunners players and fans alike were furious they did not get a second right at the end.

Gabriel Jesus clearly knocked the ball off Kostas Tsimikas, who desperately tried to kick it again before it went out of play knowing he had made the last touch.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

And given Arsenal’s propensity to score from set pieces, they were understandably apoplectic to see the controversial goal-kick decision.

By that time, though, star man Saka had been taken off.

a poster showing arsenal v liverpool match stats

MatchDay Live

The England winger was an injury doubt but worked hard to get fit – and his return to the starting XI was a welcome bonus for Mikel Arteta.

Saka managed 41 touches in his 85 minutes on the field and completed 15 of his 23 passes.

His two shots – one less than Salah – resulted in the opening goal and he drew two fouls from the men in black.

But Saka did his defensive work, too, succeeding with his one tackle and winning seven of his nine duels.

Interestingly, his heat map showed a similar pattern to team-mate Kai Havertz with much of their action down the right channel.

Saka – who celebrated with a cool shrug of his shoulders as he became the youngest Arsenal player to 50 Premier League goals – said: “I try to keep the keepers guessing.

“I think it was a nice finish, I haven’t seen it back yet but it felt nice.

“He has every record Thierry Henry so it’s nice but of course you wanna win the game but I have to be happy with this.

Everything is Thierry Henry-ish. If you score it’s Thierry Henry, if you assist it’s Thierry Henry.

“I’m feeling good. I felt I could finish the game but the gaffer took me off.”

Salah powered into the bottom corner for 2-2[/caption] a poster showing mo salah 's stats against arsenal a shot map of a soccer game between liverpool and arsenal an arsenal soccer poster showing the average team position an average team position for liverpool v arsenal

The average positions from both sides also made interesting reading.

Saka was the most reserved of the Gunners attackers, with Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli operating further forward.

Leandro Trossard and Merino virtually had the same spot in the left high No8 position alongside Declan Rice, who covered every blade of grass in a typically-industrial performance.

Arsenal’s makeshift back four was made up of Thomas Partey, Ben White, Gabriel and Jurrien Timber – who kept it narrow as an organised unit.

However, by the end of the game after two key injuries, the defence was even more unrecognisable as Partey and White were joined by Jakub Kiwior and youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly.

For Liverpool, though, Salah was the furthest forward – and made the most of the Timber going off to exploit the weakened left side of the Arsenal back line, exposing the space to score the final goal.

Ryan Gravenberch was the deepest-lying midfielder, behind Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones, who completed 41 of his 42 passes in midfield.

Scores of dopplegangers lined up to be in with a chance to win the grand prize[/caption]

Videos circulated on social media showing the frenzy that took place when the Wonka actor, 28, rolled up in Lower Manhattan.

Spectators got way more than they expected when they turned up to see various men from across the country compete to be crowned the ‘Best Tim’ lookalike.

The winner received a $50 (£38) prize for being voted the best lookaline by the crowd, who had to shout the loudest for their fave ‘Tim’.

But the biggest screams erupted when Timothee himself emerged amongst the crowd, flanked by security.

The A-lister, who dates Kylie Jenner, couldn’t wipe the smile from his face as he witness the chaotic scenes.

Dressed casually in a blue jumper, white t-shirt and jeans, the Hollywood superstar took photos with fans who couldn’t believe they were rubbing shoulders with the real deal.

Some fans, however, got a little too overexcited, with one seen being carted off in handcuffs by the police.

One onlooker told Mail Online: “They pushed one kid and then they started yelling like ‘why the f*** would you push me,’ and made a little circle. They ended up getting arrested.”

Another described the scenes as “chaotic and intense.”

The winner of the competition was Miles Mitchell, a 21-year-old Staten Island native, who dressed in a purple Willy Wonka outfit and threw candy to the crowd.

“I’m excited and I’m also overwhelmed,” Mitchell told abc news. “There were so many good look-alikes. It was really a toss-up.”

Flyers had been posted all around the city to build up anticipation for the event in recent days.

Here’s how you can use the colder weather and darker evenings to stay in and sort your finances[/caption]

Here are some tips for boosting your bank balance.

SORT YOUR SPENDING: Audit your outgoings and put a reminder in your calendar to do this once a month.

These check-ins will help you identify areas where you can cut back and save more effectively.

Try the free Snoop app, which connects to your bank accounts, tracks your spending and sends handy alerts about what’s in your account, plus upcoming bills, so you can make sure you stay on the right path.

GO ON TRIAL: Free trials from streaming platforms, fitness apps or meal kits are a great way to save on costs.

But mark up calendar reminders a few days before any trial ends so you don’t get hit with surprise charges.

Check if you can cancel, pause or switch any services to save cash. Film buffs can currently get a 14-day free trial for the BFI Player.

Amazon Prime is offering a 30-day free trial for new customers and you can trial Spotify Premium for two months before committing.

BUST YOUR BILLS: Go through your bills and pop renewal dates for things like insurances and software licences in your diary. Many will auto renew, which can lead to surprise charges if you’ve forgotten about them.

Always read the fine print on any subscription to avoid being caught out. By setting reminders a week or two in advance, you have time to decide if you still need the service.

PLAN PRESENTS: It helps to spread the cost of gifts across the year rather than splurging last-minute. So set birthday calendar reminders for the next year — now!

Also, programme an alert for six months before special occasions so you can start setting aside cash for gifts or even pick up pressies in the sales.

If you like sending e-cards, save your birthday dates at moonpig.com and they will send you email reminders a few weeks prior.
