My traumatised sister survived the October 7 massacre but she was found dead a year after fleeing Hamas ‘death car’

EYAL Golan’s sister Shirel survived the Hamas massacre on October 7 – only to take her own life a year later on her 22nd birthday.

Shirel hid for three hours at the Nova music festival as terrorists murdered and raped her friends before she was rescued by a heroic police officer who drove her to safety.

Shirel had gone to the festival with 11 friends who fled in a “death car” while she and her boyfriend hid in a dried-out creek.

Their 11 friends were killed or taken hostage by terror group Hamas shortly after fleeing.

At Shirel’s funeral in her home town of Tel Mond last weekend, heartbreaking photographs showed her parents Yafa and Meir sobbing over her grave.

Her brother Eyal told The Sunday Times: “Before October 7, my sister was full of happiness. She had an essence. She had a presence. Everyone who knew her loved her.

“But after, it was like someone played with the dimmer on her soul, slowly turning it down until the light died.”

The Nova music festival was the first site to be hit by Hamas terrorists on October 7 when they stormed the border from Gaza.

They murdered 364 people and kidnapped 40 hostages.

Speaking about what his sister endured, Eyal said: “She heard gunshots, the shouts of people being killed, the shouts of people being raped. She heard every single thing you can imagine.”

Local police officer Remo Salman El-Hozayel bravely transported survivors from the festival site to safety in an abandoned car he found after his own vehicle was attacked.

He made some 30 trips to a nearby farm – one carrying Shirel – risking his life each time as Hamas terrorists shot at police, soldiers, civilians and vehicles.

Shirel was one of over 200 people he rescued that day.

After her death, he said: “A year after I saved her, I buried her.

“I tried to help her as much as I could.”

Eyal said many of those who survived October 7 are now living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma-induced psychosis and depression.

Some have been hospitalised and many have taken their own lives.

Eyal – the first relative to speak publicly about this – slammed the Israeli government for not being more transparent about the mental health crisis.

He said: “They don’t publish the number of the suicide cases because they say we don’t want to encourage other people.

“But I say, no, we need to talk about it.

“I want to break the taboo, or the system will not heal itself. No one wakes up one sunny morning and decides to kill themselves.

“There is a chain of events that leads to that person committing suicide.”

Hamas killed some 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals on October 7, and kidnapped over 250 more into Gaza, some of whom are still trapped there.

The massacre sparked a year of war inside the enclave – where 42,000 Palestinians have been killed and some 96,000 injured.

The Israeli health ministry has offered 36 sessions of mental health treatment to survivors of October 7 – with almost 2,000 people taking part and qualifying for 12 more sessions.

Eyal said Shirel was treated in hospital for her mental health in June of this year – and after being discharged went on a trip to India.

You're Not Alone

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:

While there she called Eyal asking for help as local people were demanding she pay thousands of dollars for a car she had ruined in an accident.

Their dad flew out to Goa, tracked her down and paid the locals.

When she arrived back in Israel her parents took her straight to hospital from the airport.

Eyal alleges that staff at the medical facility were violent towards her, saying: “Instead of taking care of her, they beat her.

“That’s why my sister had a regression.”

Then a few months later she died.

Eyal said: “My parents watched her constantly. They left her for one hour that day and she wandered off into our garden.

“That’s where her boyfriend found her.”

He is pushing for better support in the country following Shirel’s death.

Eyal said: “We failed her. We failed her as a society, we failed her as a family, we failed her as a country.

“If someone spots a red flag and saves a life thanks to our family’s story, I have done my job.

“My sister is not coming back, but no one else needs to be alone.”

Today marks a national day of mourning in Israel for the victims of October 7 following the one-year anniversary tributes a few weeks ago.

It was approved earlier this month – to be held on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei — three days after the Simhat Torah holiday, which is when the Hamas attack took place.

The official mourning period began this morning at 6.29am, which is when the Hamas rampage began.

Pregnant Hollyoaks star Stephanie Davis rushed to hospital after struggling to breathe

FORMER soaps actress and pregnant star Stephanie Davis has been rushed into hospital following breathing struggles.

Former soaps star Stephanie has told fans via her Instagram Stories about complications she’s faced as she expects her second child.

The former soap actress explained she has swollen joints and shortness of breath, but is now at home resting[/caption]

The actress, who is dating Joe McKalroy, told fans she’s been unwell and struggling with “a shortness of breath” as well as swollen joints and pain.

She explained: “It’s killing me. My ankles are swollen, and I’ve started getting really short of breath.

“So the doctors sent me to A&E last night (Friday night), and I was like ‘I can’t sit’. It’s just torture.”

She added: “They ended up helping me out and giving me some nebulisers to help me breathe.”

She then revealed she was left “on the verge of tears” and wanting to go home, and added that she’s now at home but feeling “stressed”.

Stephanie, who is already mum to son Caleb, continued: “If I wasn’t pregnant I wouldn’t have gone, cos it’s just a nightmare isn’t it?

“But swollen joints, shortness of breath and pregnant…I just wanted to make sure the baby is okay.”

Revealing that she’s now at home and feeling better and settling down for a cosy night in and to get some rest.

The news comes after Stephanie has previously revealed her pregnancy journey hasn’t been easy.

She and parter Joe had been trying for a baby for two years and Stephanie said how it had been “a rollercoaster”.

Whilst the pregnancy news was welcomed by the couple, Stephanie was still fearful after previously she suffered a miscarriage when she was pregnant with ex Oliver Tasker’s baby.

She’d also lost another baby in 2017 just weeks before she went to court over a domestic violence case against her ex partner Jeremy McConnell.

Due to this, she was labelled “high risk” by doctors and has been under close observation throughout her current pregnancy.

So far in this pregnancy she’s already suffered scares when she was told by doctors that she had a haematoma and was put on complete bed rest.

Speaking to OK! she explained: “The doctor said he believed I was having another miscarriage – or an ectopic pregnancy. But I wasn’t having it, I had this strong gut feeling that it was all going to be OK.”

She was then left with further worries when after a holiday she picked up C-diff, which is a germ (bacterium) that causes diarrhoea and colitis and made her ill.

Steph then had blood tests which showed her HCG levels were too low and not doubling as they should.

HCG is the pregnancy hormone that double roughly every 72 hours before reaching its peak at around eight to 11 weeks of pregnancy.

Luckily, a few days later Stephanie was told that in her latest results the levels had tripled.

Steph is best known for her on-screen role where she previously played Sinead O’Connor in Hollyoaks on Channel 4.

She then went on to appear as Courtney in Coronation Street.

The signs your central heating is HARMING your health – and when to get immediate help

IT’S that time of the year again… the clocks have gone back, you’ve enjoyed that extra hour in bed and now winter is looming large.

And with the changing seasons comes the inevitable need to crank up the heating.

Having your heating on can dry out the indoor air, dry out mucous membranes, and increase the risk of colds and infections[/caption]

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can also lead to exhaustion and dehydration[/caption]

When the mercury falls below 15C, experts say it’s a good idea to start heating your home.

Though with soaring energy prices in recent years, and fears the Government is planning to take away the Winter Fuel Payment for millions of pensioners – it’s a hotly debated topic.

But it’s one that not only impacts your purse, but your health too.

There are a host of benefits linked to having a warm home during winter – less chance of damp, frozen pipes, and colds and respiratory infections caused by mould.

But turning your heating on can also have a negative effect on your health.

Dr Babak Ashrafi, Superdrug Online Doctor, said heated indoor air often becomes dry, which can lead to colds and infections.

He explained: “Dry indoor air can dry out mucous membranes, increasing the risk of colds and infections.

“Heating systems can also circulate dust and indoor pollutants, contributing to tiredness, achy muscles, or irritated eyes.

“And prolonged exposure to high temperatures, especially in poorly ventilated spaces, can also lead to heat-related conditions such as exhaustion or dehydration.”

Dr Babak said there are four symptoms in particular to look out for that your heating could be affecting your health:

  • Dehydration
  • Sinus congestion
  • Dry coughs
  • Headaches

While it might be tempting to turn your heating off to avoid problems with your health, not turning your heating on can also have a negative impact.

If you experience confusion, behavioural changes, or slurred speech, seek medical attention promptly.

Dr Babak Ashrafi

Dr Babak said: “Leaving the heating off can be a contributory factor to minor health issues such as common colds, particularly in the colder winter months.

“Lower indoor temperatures can also increase the risk of respiratory issues like asthma or pneumonia, as the colder air can make breathing more difficult.

“These symptoms can be further exacerbated if a home is damp and mouldy, something which can sometimes be the case in under-heated, poorly ventilated houses.”

Cold conditions can also raise blood pressure, warned Dr Babak.

He added: “Colder temperatures can lead to blood vessels restricting, which leads to an increase in pressure.”

So what temperature should you set your heating to for optimum health?

The NHS recommends heating your home to at least 18°C during the winter.

This is particularly important for people who are older, have long-term illnesses, or are not mobile.

Dr Babak added: “You should also look to do this in rooms you spend the most time in, such as the living room or bedroom.”

What can you do to alleviate symptoms caused by your heating?

Using a smart thermostat to control the temperature in your home more effectively can help, as well as a humidifier on to balance moisture in the air, and stay hydrated.

Dr Babak also advised: “If you’re feeling unwell and suspect heating might be the cause, try stepping outside for a 30-minute walk.

“If you feel better afterwards, it could indicate that your symptoms are related to indoor conditions.

“If you experience confusion, behavioural changes, or slurred speech, seek medical attention promptly.”

Beware – turning your heating on can also cause mould

When you turn on the heating, water that evaporated from warm surfaces condenses on cold surfaces like windows, walls, and mirrors. This condensation can lead to mould growth.

Also, if there’s already a significant source of moisture, like a leak, heating alone might not be enough to prevent mould.

Mould can cause allergic reactions similar to those caused by plant pollen, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash.

Respiratory issues can also start, including coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing.

In some cases, mould can increase the risk of airway infections, including aspergillosis.

Symptoms of aspergillosis, according to the NHS, include:

  • shortness of breath
  • a cough – you may cough up blood or lumps of mucus
  • wheezing
  • a high temperature
  • losing weight without trying
  • feeling tired

To get rid of mould when you turn the heating on, open windows to allow warm, moist air to escape and cooler, drier air to enter.

A dehumidifier can extract moisture from the air.

Wipe down windows and sills with a dry cloth to remove condensation.

And for smaller amounts of mould, you can use a fungicide to kill it.

NHS advice for keeping warm

Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.

As well as heating your home to at least 18°C, particularly in the rooms that you regularly use, you should keep your bedroom windows closed at night.

You should also make sure you’re getting all the help that you’re entitled to. There are grants, benefits and advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills.

Remember that other people, such as older neighbours, friends and family members, may need some extra help over the winter.

Keep in touch with your friends, neighbours and family and ask if they need any practical help, or if they’re feeling unwell.

Make sure they’re stocked up with enough food supplies for a few days, in case they cannot go out.

If they do need to go out in the cold, encourage them to wear shoes with a good grip and a scarf around the mouth to protect them from cold air, and to reduce their risk of chest infections.

Also, make sure they get any prescription medicines before the holiday period starts and if bad weather is forecast.

Where the cast of Not The Nine O’Clock News are now – from sad death to time in prison

IT was the iconic Eighties sketch show that got everybody laughing thanks to its fun-poking at the latest news and policitcs.

Starring an eclectic cast of household names, the show aired between 1979 and 1982 and is often credited with the rise in alternative comedy in British television.

Not The Nine O’Clock News became a huge hit in the 80s[/caption]

Now, one of the show’s writers, Richard Sparks, has admitted he thinks it is time that the show makes a comeback.

The star admitted the current political landscape has plenty that he could write about, telling the Express in a recent interview: “Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the scandal over gifts could be a plum target.

“All that stuff is going to waste as material isn’t it. What a wonderful sketch you could have about that. I mean I could write it in 10 seconds and it just write itself.”

But what happened to the most famous faces from the sitcom and where are they now

Rowan Atkinson

Rowan Atkinson rose to fame on the show before going on to bag a slew of top TV roles[/caption]

Arguably the most famous amongst the cast, Rowan has managed to carve out an impressive career for himself after the show.

After the show, he bagged the leading role in Blackadder which went on to become one of the Beeb’s most popular shows.

Rowan also became well-known for his portrayal of the unmistakable Mr. Bean as well as the iconic Johnny English films.

At the age of 58, Rowan famously fell for the much-younger actress Louise Ford and left his wife in order to be with her.

The pair went on to have a child with each other with Rowan becoming a father to the tot in his sixties.

Chris Langham

Chris Langham lost his career after being imprisoned for heinous crimes[/caption]

Chris once had a glistening career in the world of comedy and was famed for his role as Hugh Abbot in the BBC sitcom The Thick of It.

He even picked up the gong for Best Actor at the 2006 BAFTA Awards for his portrayal as well as the BBC Two comedy Help alongside Paul Whitehouse and Alison King.

However, his career was ground to a halt when he was arrested and later charged with downloading 15 child sexual abuse videos and images

He was jailed for ten months, which was later reduced to six on appeal.

Chris claimed in defence that he downloaded the material as research for his character as a ‘peeping Tom’ in Help and insisted he had only watched a few seconds of four of the videos.

Judge Dame Heather Steel went on to argue this was “highly improbable”.

Chris’ career has failed to be revived since his prison release with him appearing in just a 2011 low-budget movie titled Black Pond and another movie the following year before failing to be employed again.

Mel Smith

Mel passed away from a heart attack in 2013[/caption]

Mel became one of the country’s leading comedy performers following his participation in the show.

He worked alongside Nine O’Clock News star Griff Rhys Jones a lot in his career with the becoming a double act after their time on the programme.

Some of his most notable TV show appearances include Smith and Goody, The Young Ones and Colin’s Sandwich.

Mel faced a number of health issues across his life and was hospitalised with stomach ulcers in 1999 after accidentally taking 50 Nurofen tablets in one day.

In 2013, aged just 60, he was revealed to have died after he suffered a a heart attack at his home in London.

Pamela swapped the TV screen for a ‘regular’ job[/caption]

Pamela has achieved success in two completely separate careers.

As well as her work in comedy, television and performing – she opted to train in psychology in the early 90s after meeting all of her comedy goals.

She began studying at the Antioch University in the United States and graduated with a doctorate in clinical psychology from the California Graduate Institute in 1996 before going on to set up her own private practise.

Pamela went on to found the the Los Angeles Sexuality Centre with a focus on the investigation of transgender people.

With her current focus primarily in that line of work, she did make a return to TV with a stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010.

Griff Rhys Jones

Griff became a famous face in the TV world[/caption]

Griff, like his fellow cast members, enjoyed a career in the spotlight with a huge comedy career.

However, he also managed to achieve success as a TV host and in the world of documentaries.

Between 2008 and 2018, he replaced Denis Norden as the host of bloopers show It’ll Be Alright On The Night before axed BGT judge David Walliams took over.

In 2022, he fronted Griff’s Canadian Adventure, a new six-part series for Channel 4 which saw him exploring across Canada.
