Murdered David Amess’ daughter breaks family silence after ‘world shattered’ when terrorist stabbed MP to death

Jihadist Ali Harbi Ali admitted killing Sir David but denied murder, claiming he was protecting fellow Muslims with the brutal attack.

For the first time since the MP’s death, Sir David Amess’ daughter, Katie, has spoken out about how their “world shattered”.

The 39-year-old actress also voiced her anger over the police and the Home Office’s “failures,” which failed to intervene despite Ali being known to them.

Katie revealed that she struggled to talk about the moment she found her father had been stabbed.

“None of this seems real to me,” she said.

She has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and is undergoing therapy.

Katie spent months after her father’s death watching hours of footage, from his speeches in the Commons to moments of him enjoying life at a family barbeque.

“I was scared I would forget him but now I know I won’t because I am part of him,” she added.

Katie’s mother, Julia, 70, had to move out of the family home, where they had lived for three decades because it became too difficult for her to stay.

Despite the tragic loss of her dad, the 39-year-old cherishes the time she spent with him.

Katie said: “I just loved spending time with him, and he made so much time for me, having my friends over for a barbecue, organising a party for my every birthday, visiting old country houses.”

Sir David Amess was dubbed “Mr Southend” due to his long-standing campaign to secure city status for Southend, a goal that was achieved when the Queen granted it after his death.

Katie recalled that the family received thousands of letters from residents expressing their sadness over the loss of their beloved MP.

On the day of the attack, Sir David Amess, excited to speak to his constituents, arrived at his surgery at Leigh-on-Sea.

There was no security or police presence.

Ali Harbi Ali travelled by train from his home in North London, and within minutes of arriving and sitting opposite the MP, he stabbed Amess more than 20 times.

Ali was sentenced to spend the rest of life in prison in 2022.

In 2015, when he was 18, Ali was visited by an officer from the Home Office’s Prevent programme, in one of the first of two intended meetings, and had a second scheduled meeting that never happened, before his case was closed in 2016.

A Home Office spokesperson said in a statement: “Our thoughts continue to be with Sir David Amess’ family and friends.

“The attack on Sir David Amess was an awful tragedy, the safety of members of Parliament is paramount, and significant work has been taken forward in response to his tragic killing.

“Prevent is a vital tool to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism and tackles all ideological causes of terrorism.”

Sir Chris Hoy reveals cancer ‘feels like drowning’ as his wife is left ‘in daze of shock’ by double blow of MS diagnosis

SIR Chris Hoy has revealed his cancer “feels like drowning” as his wife was left “in a daze of shock” by the double blow of her MS diagnosis.

Britain’s most successful Olympian, 48, revealed his terminal prognosis at the weekend after announcing in February that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

His wife Sarra, 40, was also diagnosed with a “very reactive and aggressive” type of MS.

In excerpts published by The Sunday Times of Hoy’s autobiography All That Matters he spoke about the moment he learned he had cancer.

Hoy said: “The doctor turns the screen to me to reveal the scan in all its grainy detail and the tumour that is currently in my shoulder.

“Hearing the word ‘cancer’ has had an immediate and profound effect on me, and not just me.

“In one short moment, life has changed irrevocably.”

He described the “dark moments” in the early days of his treatment as a “drowning sensation”, but added that he’s become better able to cope.

The six-time Olympic gold medallist also opened up about learning Sarra had MS.

She’d been told her diagnosis over the phone a month before she broke the news to Hoy.

Hoy said: “I immediately broke down, distraught both by the news and the fact she’d received it without me there.”

He explained that Sarra went to her own appointment just seven days after his cancer diagnosis in a “daze of shock”.

Hoy had said in a previous interview with the Sunday Times: “You know, we were all born and we all die, and this is just part of the process.

“You remind yourself, aren’t I lucky that there is medicine I can take that will fend this off for as long as possible?”

His diagnosis came after his father and grandfather were both diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In September 2023, a doctor delivered the awful news to Hoy that he had Stage 4 cancer.

What was first diagnosed as a tumour in his shoulder, the primary cancer was located in his prostate.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

Symptoms of prostate cancer can include:

  • Needing to pee more frequently, often during the night
  • Needing to rush to the toilet
  • Difficulty in starting to pee (hesitancy)
  • Straining or taking a long time while peeing
  • Weak flow
  • Feeling that your bladder has not emptied fully
  • Blood in urine or blood in semen

It had then unfortunately spread to his bones, pelvis, hip, spine, shoulder and rib.

Medics have given Hoy two to four years to live.

Sarra’s condition was spotted when she went for a scan after experiencing a tingling sensation in her face and tongue.

The Scottish cycling hero shared a touching video on social media just days ago.

He thanked fans for their support following his devastating diagnosis.

The cyclist said in the video: “Hi everyone, I just wanted to share an update about my health, after telling you that I was receiving treatment for cancer.

“I’m so grateful to everyone for their incredible kindness and support.

“You have heard by now that I’m ready to share that my cancer is stage 4: I will be living with it for the rest of my life.

“Now it’s not the news anyone imagines hearing, and it obviously came as a huge shock.

“We’ve taken time to process it as a family and I now have a deep resolve to turn this incredibly difficult diagnosis into something more positive that can help not just me, but anyone anywhere living with stage 4.”

Home Office figures showed 424 people crossed the Channel on seven boats on Friday.

Analysis of government spending shows it would cost £3.2billion to process all new asylum claims from this year.

Meanwhile, Tory leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick argued Labour scrapping the Tories’ Rwanda deportation plan has led to “open season”.

Tory leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick said: “Keir Starmer has proven himself to be a useful idiot for the smuggler gangs.

“His decision to scrap, not strengthen, the Rwanda deterrent has led to open season in the Channel.

“The British people are going to be made to pay the price for his weakness with more expensive asylum hotels and dangerous illegal migrants on the streets.”

And the Home Office vowed to smash human trafficking operations following recent tragedies.

Three people died and 56 were rescued when a boat sank in the Channel on Wednesday.

But others commented to tell that there is actually a similar calendar being sold in Home Bargains for £10 – £2 cheaper than The Works.

How to save money on Christmas shopping

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.

Limit the amount of presents – buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.

Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you’re not having to buy multiple presents.

Plan ahead – if you’ve got the stamina and budget, it’s worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales.

Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you’re not forking out more than you should though.

Buy in Boxing Day sales – some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25.

Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.

Shop via outlet stores – you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.

They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor.
