Gate lice: What are they and how do they affect your airport trip?

‘GATE lice’ is a derogatory term used in the air travel community to describe a certain group of passengers.

Here’s everything you need to know about what a gate louse is and why they are seen as a nuisance.

What are gate lice?

People who crowd around boarding gates well before their designated boarding time are referred to by airline workers as ‘gate lice’.

The phenomenon has become increasingly common and can significantly impact the airport experience for both travelers and airline staff alike.

Gate lice behavior is characterized by passengers gathering near the boarding gate, often blocking access and creating congestion.

These individuals typically aim to be among the first to board the plane, despite having assigned seats.

The term has gained recognition among frequent flyers and airline employees, who often express frustration with this practice.

Shira Gabriel, a psychology professor at the University of Buffalo, told told The Washington Post: “People will do any weird thing if they think that’s the way to behave.

“When you see people lining up, getting ready, it makes you feel there’s a benefit for that”.

Causes

Several factors contribute to the gate lice phenomenon.

Some attribute this behavior to inexperienced travelers who may not fully understand airline boarding procedures.

The desire to secure overhead bin space for carry-ons is also believed to be a significant motivator — especially given baggage fees and concerns about lost luggage.

Queueing early can provide a sense of control and reduce stress for anxious travelers.

When people see others lining up, they tend to follow suit, believing it’s the correct behavior.

The phenomenon has reportedly increased following the Covid-19 pandemic, possibly due to heightened travel anxiety.

Psychologist Dr Audrey Tang told Metro.co.uk: “Queueing for boarding as soon as we are able to can help us to feel in control, which in turn makes us feel less stressed.”

Gate lice can cause delays to the scheduled take-off time

She added: “Maybe some people just like to be first, but it’s largely to do with keeping ourselves calm.”

Impact

Gate lice can negatively affect various aspects of the airport experience:

  • Congestion: Crowding at gates can lead to confusion and difficulty moving through the boarding area
  • Delayed boarding: The need to clear non-priority passengers from the boarding area can slow down the process for those with priority boarding
  • Accessibility: Large crowds can make it challenging for passengers with mobility issues or those in wheelchairs to access the boarding area
  • Stress: The competitive atmosphere created by gate lice can heighten anxiety for all travelers
  • Inefficiency: The disorganized nature of early queuing can make the entire boarding process less efficient

Response

Airlines have implemented various strategies to address the gate lice problem.

Secret cabin crew phrases

Flight attendants have a special language they use to talk about passengers.

Here are some of the secret phrases used by pilots and cabin crew:

  • Cropdusting: If a passenger is being very rude and difficult, then it’s not unheard of for a flight attendant to break wind and ‘cropdust’ past the offender.
  • Code Adam: This is used by airport staff to alert other staff of a missing child, in honour of Adam Walsh, a child who was abducted in a department store in 1981.
  • 7500: If a pilot squawks “7500” it means the plane has been hijacked, or a hijacking is a threat.
  • Crosscheck: If you hear this phrase, usually made by senior cabin crew, it means that the emergency slides attached to each door have been deactivated.
  • ABP: translates to ‘able bodied passengers’ — individuals that the crew seek out just in case of an emergency.
  • Runners: Those who sprint from one connecting flight to another because their first flight was late.
  • Spinner: Somebody who turns up late without an assigned seat, with crew dubbing them ‘spinners’ as they usually look flustered as they search for a seat and space in the overhead lockers.
  • Blue juice: Refers to the liquid used to flush the contents of the plane loo.
  • Crotch watch: What crew do to check you have got your seat belt fastened before takeoff and landing.

They have created dedicated lanes for elite fliers and introduced priority boarding programs for specific customer groups.

Some have even been testing new technologies to deal with the issue, such as American Airlines’ system that alerts gate agents when passengers attempt to board too early.

Recommendations

To avoid being labeled as a gate louse and contribute to a smoother airport experience, travelers should:

  • Remain seated until their boarding group is called
  • Stand away from the immediate gate area to avoid congestion
  • Be aware of surroundings and respectful of other passengers’ space and boarding priorities
  • Trust the assigned seating system and understand that boarding earlier doesn’t necessarily mean a faster departure

By being mindful of this type of behavior and its impact can contribute to a more pleasant and efficient airport experience for everyone.

As the air travel industry continues to evolve, finding solutions to this counterproductive conduct remains an ongoing challenge for airlines and passengers alike.

‘World’s oldest’ pyramid discovered in Java jungle may be 25,000 years old – but archaeologists claim it’s not man-made

THE “world’s oldest” pyramid in the Java jungle may be a whopping 25,000 years old – but archaeologists have eerily claimed it isn’t man-made.

Despite the world record holder being listed as the Djoser Step pyramid in Egypt, research claims a layer of the Gunung Padang pyramid in Indonesia is even older.

The pyramid was built over millennia and is the largest monolith in Southeast Asia[/caption]

The structure hides secret chambers that could reveal unknown facts about pre-historic people[/caption]

Gunung Padang is a massive underground pyramid, hiding beneath a hillside on Java island, Indonesia.

Its name translates to “mountain of enlightenment” from Sundanese, the native language of the area, as the place served for religious rituals throughout history.

The structure is known as the largest megalithic site in Southeast Asia.

Research from the Indonesian Institute of Scientists believe “the pyramid’s core consists of meticulously sculpted massive andesite lava”.

This is because experts believe the pyramid likely “originated as a natural lava hill”.

After nature began the structure, humans finished it by sculpting it and making it “architecturally enveloped”.

They write: “This study sheds light on advanced masonry skills dating back to the last glacial period.

“This finding challenges the conventional belief that human civilisation and the development of advanced construction techniques emerged only… with the advent of agriculture approximately 11,000 years ago.

“Evidence from Gunung Padang and other sites, such as Gobekli Tepe [in Turkey], suggests that advanced construction practices were already present when agriculture had, perhaps, not yet been invented.”

Experts also believe the builders of the incredible structure “must have possessed remarkable masonry capabilities”.

Gunung Padang was apparently abandoned for several millennia, leading to significant weathering.

The construction was picked up again around 7900–6100 BCE, adding various rock columns and gravelly soils.

Interestingly, during this time, the builders deliberately buried or built over some older parts of the site.

The “peculiar” shape of the hill stood out from the landscape, said the lead geophysicist, Danny Hilman Natawidjaja.

The team of archaeologists and geologists at Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation agency gradually uncovered several layers of the structure which spread over an area of 15 hectares and had been built up over millennia.

According to the researchers, Gunung Padang’s underground layers date to 9,500 to 28,000 years ago.

This would make the historic site not only the first pyramid, but also the oldest monolithic structure in the world.

To put things into perspective, the current oldest pyramid title belongs to the Pyramid of Djoser in Egypt, estimated to be about 4,692 years old.

Previously it was found that the giant pyramid built atop of the extinct volcano may be hiding unknown ancient treasures, say archaeologists.

The deepest part of the complex lies almost 100 feet down and has hidden chambers. The secret chambers may reveal unknown facts about the ancient civilisations that thrived on the land.

Channel 4 schedule in chaos as mystery Dispatches ‘special’ is announced to air TONIGHT

Bosses at the station have announced the changes with just hours to go until its broadcast.

The untitled mystery programme will air on Channel 4 at 8.10pm this evening, lasting an hour.

It’s pushed out a planned episode of Little Trains & Big Names with Pete Waterman from the schedules.

Dispatches is an investigation series, which first launched all the way back in 1987.

Recent special reports from the show include an exposé on comedian Russell Brand, a report into Britain’s local hotspots where 100% of crime cases go unsolved.

The Sun has contacted Channel 4.

The special episode of Dispatches was due to air last weekend, before being pulled last minute.

It was replaced with a repeated episode of Grand Designs, with no explanation given by bosses.

Channel 4's best competition shows

Channel 4 boasts a number impressive competition shows, but which ones are really the best?

Four in a Bed

  • Reality competition show Four in a Bed has been airing on Channel 4 since 2010. It follows four couples as they take turns to stay at each others B&Bs and hotels, rating their stays along the way. The couple with the establishment voted best value for money are the winners.

Come Dine With Me

  • Come Dine With Me has been staple British viewing since 2005, providing some outrageous telly moments over the years. Like Four in a Bed, the series moves around to different properties as it follows four contestants as they each host a (supposedly) gourmet dinner party for each other. After each dinner the guests score the host out of 10, will the winner being revealed on the final evening.

The Great British Bake Off

  • Another national treasure, The Great British Bake Off welcomes a group of 12 amateur bakers to put their culinary skills to the test with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judging their efforts. One contestant is eliminated each week until the final three face off in the last week.

Bake Off: The Professionals

  • Bake Off: The Professionals puts a twist on GBBO, pitting two teams of professional pastry chefs against each other in every episode. It’s up to judges Benoit Blin and Cherish Finden to determine who has what it takes to make it through to the final.

Premier League flop, 40, pulls out ‘Prime Buffon appearance’ that leaves even Lionel Messi stunned

A former Premier League keeper left Lionel Messi stunned with his performance in the MLS on Friday night.

Eastern Conference champions Inter Miami claimed a 2-1 win over Atlanta United in the first of a three-match play-off series.

Yet Messi‘s all-star side could have had a host more goals had it not been for Atlanta’s 40-year-old shot-stopper.

He made an astonishing NINE saves in the match and was compared by one social media user to Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon.

The display also included him thwarting Messi in a one-on-one situation with a tackle 30 YARDS from his goal.

The keeper in question was ex-Aston Villa man Brad Guzan.

Guzan, who has 64 caps for USA, spent eight years at Villa and made 171 appearances.

However, he was never particularly rated by English football fans and left to return to America in 2017 after a short spell at Middlesbrough.

Yet he looked better than ever in the MLS on Friday night – six weeks after his 40th birthday.

And even Messi looked stunned by some of the stops he was making.

Reacting to Guzan’s performance, one fan said: “Incredible performance by the keeper. I’ll be honest, I felt Messi needed to get Guzan’s shirt 😅.”

Another added: “Brad Guzan just casually had a Prime Buffon performance at 40 years of age… GOODNESS!”

A third replied: “Brad Guzan had nine saves tonight, almost all of them un-routine. He also won a one-v-one tackle against Messi 30 yards off his line.

“He has been amazing this year, and again tonight.”

While a fourth responded: “He really should get a national team call up for a final match.”

Inter Miami still won the game thanks to goals from Barcelona legends Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba.

A victory in Atlanta on Saturday, November 2 would book their place in the Conference semi-finals – where they will play Orlando City or Charlotte.

My elderly cousin behaved in a sexually inappropriate way with me

DEAR DEIDRE: DELIVERING some food to my cousin, I had the most unsettling experience.

My mum had asked me to take some meals as his wife recently walked out on him and he now lives alone.

He is 61 and I’m 43.

While I was speaking to him in the kitchen he started to stroke the front of his jeans, pinching and holding where his penis was.

This wasn’t a mere adjustment but prolonged and almost as if he had an erection.

He has never behaved like this before.

It was totally out of character.

I was so uncomfortable that I left as soon as I could.

Now Mum has asked me to go again but I can’t face it.

My girlfriend is wonderful but I can’t stop chasing other women

DEAR DEIDRE: MY girlfriend is wonderful but I can’t stop chasing other women.

I am 29, she is 28 and we have been together for two years.

We have a terrific relationship, a great sex life and I am totally smitten with her so why do I cheat?

I have strayed countless times.

When I’m with her she’s all I want but when I see a nice-looking woman, it’s as though my girlfriend doesn’t exist.

Recently I went out with my mates from work to celebrate our boss’s 30th birthday.

He was buying all the drinks and everyone got pretty drunk.

We went from bar to bar and ended up in a club surrounded by a group of very attractive women.

One of them clearly fancied me and before I knew it, I was chatting her up.

We went outside for a bit of fresh air.

I knew what would happen and so did she.

We found a quiet spot around the back of the club and were all over each other like a rash.

We had sex but I was too drunk to say whether it was good or not.

Afterwards I felt bad and so did she.

I am ashamed of myself.

I want to have a normal, loving, faithful relationship.

I want to marry my girlfriend but I’m scared she will find out about my antics and will get rid of me.

She deserves so much better than the way I treat her.

It plays on my mind so much that I have thought about going to church to ease my guilt.

DEIDRE SAYS: Making a confession to a priest may ease your guilt temporarily but only until you cheat again.

What matters more is to stop cheating like this.

Casual sex puts your sexual health at risk.

If you then have sex with your girlfriend, you are putting hers at risk too.

Oxford were not too pleased as they were on the attack at the time, with the referee calling a halt to play.

Players were seen with their arms up in the air – Oxford striker Mark Harris was seen gesturing towards the dugout area.

Their frustrations were made worse 15 minutes later as Jobe Bellingham headed in the opener for the hosts.

The Black Cats then doubled their lead after half-time through Wilson Isidor.

Fans found the incident amusing with one saying: “Turning the sprinklers on while Oxford are on the attack is prime s***housery.”

Another added: “Seems like Sunderland playing dark arts with sprinklers now.”

It was a dramatic day in the Championship as Coventry’s clash with Luton was also stopped for a bizarre reason.

The game was halted because somebody was seen paragliding over the Coventry stadium.

I started gambling again after seven years & I’m worried I’ll lose everything

DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER seven years of staying away from online gambling, I’m back on all the same sites – and new ones.

Every evening I spend hours on them and I am ultimately spending far more than I should.

I’m so disappointed with myself for giving in again, having kicked the habit once already.

I’m 46 and currently separating from my wife, she’s 48.

She has one side of the house and I have the other.

The only room we share is the kitchen and even then we have different shelves.

It is so sad and I admit that I feel miserable.

We simply have nothing in common any longer.

The problem is that I am secretly gambling away my savings – the money I will need to set up a new home and forge ahead with a new life.

Last night I lost £75.

If I carry on like this, I will have spent my entire savings account on gambling.

The worst part is, I know I’m being stupid and wish I could put an end to this but most nights, I slip back into the same bad routine.

Last time I was gambling I spent nearly £4,500 before my wife realised what I was doing.

She wasn’t pleased but she did help me.

This time I haven’t got that support and I’m worried I’ll lose everything.
