Who is Erik and Lyle Menendez’s cousin Karen VanderMolen and what has Kitty’s niece said about the brothers
KAREN VanderMolen is the cousin of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were jailed after murdering their parents in 1989.
She has supported George Gascon’s recommendation for the brothers’ resentencing, which came in light of some shocking new evidence.
A “gut feeling”
Not much is known about Karen’s early life, before the deaths of José and Kitty Menendez in 1989.
However, she has spoken publicly about how she and other family members had a “gut feeling” that something was wrong in the Menendez family’s domestic life.
In retrospect, she believes this gut feeling may have been an unconscious recognition of the abuse that Erik and Lyle are alleged to have suffered.
She told NewsNation that it was painful to think about Kitty being aware of the abuse and not stepping in.
Karen said: “I think she was getting used to the money, fame and fortune.
“I guess her kids were enough of a sacrifice for her.
“The Kitty I grew up with would have never allowed anything to happen in her home.
“This was something that she had to have learnt from Jose.”
Resentencing the Menendez brothers
On October 24, 2024, George Gascon announced that he would be recommending that Erik and Lyle Menendez should have their sentences reconsidered.
He said he was hoping to have this sentence reduced to life in prison with the possibility of parole or 50 years in prison with the possibility of parole.
The brothers were jailed after they killed their parents in 1989, in a murder so brutal that the police believed it may have been the work of the mob.
After their arrest, the brothers claimed that they had been acting in self-defense and that they had been sexually abused by their father José.
Despite the efforts of their all-star legal team, composed of Leslie Abramson, Charles Gessler and Jill Lansing, the brothers were sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Karen has said that she understands Erik and Lyle’s crime.
She said: “Their actions, while tragic, were the desperate response of two boys trying to survive the unspeakable cruelty of their father.”
Karen added: “The truth is, Lyle and Erik were failed by the very people who should have protected them—their parents, the system, and society at large.”
Milton Anderson, Erik and Lyle’s uncle, does not share her support for the brothers’ release.
In a previous interview, he described the brothers’ claims of abuse as a “load of bull” and his lawyer said George’s calls for resentencing were an attempt to “rewrite history”.
New evidence
George’s recommendation came in light of new evidence about the Menendez murders.
A letter, written by Erik to his late cousin Andy Cano, was uncovered and supporters of the brothers claim that it supports Erik’s abuse claims.
The letter, which was discovered by Andy’s mum Marta Cano, details Erik’s fear of his father and says that “it’s still happening, Andy, but it’s worse now”.
He doesn’t detail what “it” is, but Erik says that “every night, I stay up thinking he might come in”.
In 2023, Roy Rosello, a member of the Puerto Riccan boyband Menudo, claimed that he had been abused by Jose as a child too.

THE SUPERVET’S Noel Fitzpatrick has revealed that racy admissions about his female admirers in his new book have been edited out.
The beloved TV veterinarian, 56, speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show this morning, revealed that a page was missing from his memoirs.
He teased that appearing in his vet scrubs had indeed led to romance and admirers.
However, he admitted that his tales were deemed unsuitable for his newly published autobiography entitled Dogs and Their Humans: Stories of Healing and Hope from the Supervet’s Surgery.
On the show, Chris read out a passage from the book, which said: “‘I would be lying if I said that being a vet hasn’t sometimes led to admirers.
“Maybe it’s one of those jobs that there is the kind of competence that some people find attractive that isn’t quite firefighting.
“But you’re often helping folks in a difficult situation wearing a certain kind of uniform…’”
He then asked: “Tell us where that bit comes from and where it’s heading?”
Noel said: “Well, it was heading to another page that they took out. I’m not joking. Yeah, it was a bit taken out…”
“I wrote it, but it was a little too close to the edge.”
Asked what exactly had been censored, Noel replied: “Chris, if I told you that, I’d be in trouble.”
But he wasn’t afraid to share how others had been exposed and during an appearance on Lorraine on Thursday, he revealed how a dog shockingly exposed a man’s affair.
Noel retold a funny story from his book and said: “There’s this cocky guy who comes into my clinic, driving his Bentley“
“His wife, his very attractive wife, gets out of the car carrying a West Highland White Terrier, attempting to vomit. So I induce the dog to vomit whatever it was going to vomit.”
Noel recalled how he then induced the dog to vomit whatever it wanted to get out of its system.

Sudden death of girl, 13, from ‘flu-like bug’ could be CRIMINAL after docs dismissed her as ‘dramatic teen’
CRIMINAL prosecution could be considered over the sudden death of a girl, 13, from a ‘flu-like bug’ – after doctors dismissed her as a “diva teen”.
Chloe Longster died of sepsis on November 29, 2022 after NHS staff fobbed off her cold and flu symptoms and told her mother Louise she was a “mum who had been on Google”.
The teen, in “unbearable” and “severe pain” in her ribs, was eventually rushed to A&E on November 28 and died 18-and-a-half-hours later.
She was admitted to the paediatric ward at Kettering General Hospital in Northamptonshire that evening.
Chloe was later transferred to intensive care, where she was intubated in the ICU but passed away after 30 minutes of CPR while in cardiac arrest.
A coroner has now concluded negligence by NHS staff contributed to Chloe’s death.
A Care Quality Commission (CQC) spokesperson said: “We are currently in the process of making inquiries to establish whether there is reasonable suspicion that a criminal offence has been committed.”
At an inquest which concluded at Northampton Coroner’s Court on Friday, assistant coroner Sophie Lomas ruled there were multiple vital missed opportunities to save Chloe’s life.
The key problems identified in the inquest included delays to her sepsis screening and treatment, as well as delays to prescribe and administer the correct antibiotics.
Chloe had complained of cold-like symptoms in the days leading up to her death, but her mum said they “didn’t interrupt her usual activities”.
But after she was raced to hospital, the schoolgirl quickly deteriorated.
Chloe’s mother Louise said her daughter “asked to be put to sleep” in the hospital because the pain was “unbearable”.
Louise told the inquest on the first day of evidence: “Chloe asked me on Skylark if she was going to die.
“It’s haunting that the 13-year-old was the one that was right. It’s devastating.”
The inquest heard how Chloe’s chest x-ray showed solid material in her left lung rather than air, which made doctors initially believe that she had a chest infection or pneumonia.
The family’s solicitor, Rachel Young, told the coroner there were a “sequence of delays” and “crucial and significant missed opportunities” in Chloe’s care.
She added: “The evidence is clear – a sepsis screening did not happen when it should have taken place.”
In a narrative verdict read to the court, Ms Lomas said: “Between 12.15am and 12.40am there were signs of septic shock.
“Recognition of that should have prompted immediate action.
“There were several missed opportunities to recognise Chloe’s deteriorating condition.
“The trust recognised those missed opportunities, they have stated there were shortcomings in care both medically and in nursing.
“I do accept on balance that Chloe’s condition, if identified earlier, could have been managed and would have altered the outcome.
“Her death was contributed to by negligence. There were repeated missed opportunities to recognise and respond to her deteriorating condition.”
SERIES OF DELAYS
The inquest heard how it took almost eight hours before Chloe’s blood pressure was recorded on hospital systems after she arrived.
Ms Lomas said if this had been recorded earlier, her Paediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) would have triggered a red flag for sepsis.
And, a nurse who later recorded observations did not use the sepsis screening tool but could not articulate why she did not.
She agreed that she should have done, Ms Lomas told the inquest.
A statement written by Chloe’s family, read by Ms Lomas, said: “She was a shining example to others with a heart of gold.
“She saw the world through a lens of kindness. If only the world could have been kinder back. If only in her time of need she was shown the same compassion.”
Louise told how a “very healthy” Chloe had a passion for dancing and gymnastics.
She never been admitted to hospital before, and had only ever been diagnosed with mild asthma.
‘POWERLESS’
Speaking before the five-day inquest began, the heartbroken mum told the PA news agency she felt “powerless”.
She said: “I was up and down constantly trying to get Chloe the medication that she needed and she was prescribed.
“Everything just felt really delayed, there didn’t seem to be any sort of meaningful urgency or action.
“There was ample time, there were plenty of opportunities. She was literally under their noses and everything was there.
“I really believe Chloe died because there is a pervasive belief that parents are an irritant and they’re wrong.
“There needs to be empathy and compassion when dealing with especially sick children. Chloe was voiceless for that period of time. I was completely powerless, as was her dad.”
The devastated parent said life has been a “living nightmare” since the tragedy.
“Nothing compares to losing a child. Chloe’s absence is deafening – she was larger than life in a lot of ways, she was very much just excitable and a burst of energy,” she said.

SEPSIS is a life-threatening reaction to an infection that happens when your immune system overreacts and starts to damage your body's own tissues and organs.
Symptoms of sepsis in an adult include:
- Acting confused, slurred speech or not making sense
- Blue, grey, pale or blotchy skin, lips or tongue – on brown or black skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet
- A rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it, the same as meningitis
- Difficulty breathing, breathlessness or breathing very fast

Following the conclusion of the inquest on Friday, Louise said in a statement: “While nothing can make up for the loss of Chloe, we are pleased with the coroner’s findings of neglect as part of her narrative conclusion.
“There was a catalogue of missed opportunities in Chloe’s care.”
Group chief nurse for the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, Julie Hogg, said: “We offer our deepest condolences to Chloe’s family for their loss. We are sorry that we failed to offer Chloe the care she deserved – we should have done more.
“In the two years since Chloe died our teams have worked hard to make significant improvements, including our management of patients with sepsis and those who are not getting better.
“We have also increased our staffing levels and improved the way we communicate with our patients and their families. We realise there is still more to do but we are committed to ensuring that every patient receives the best care.”
Ms Lomas concluded the inquest with a statement to the family, in which she said: “Chloe’s loss is tragic. You, through the pen portrait, presented a picture of a wonderful child who had so much to give.
“I pass on my condolences in respect of that.”

MILTON Anderson is the brother of the late Kitty Menendez who was murdered by her sons Erik and Lyle.
A district attorney named George Gascón recommended that the brothers should be released in light of new evidence which suggests that they were sexually abused by their father.
An untrusting uncle
Not much is known about Milton’s life before the death of his sister, but he has been open about his thoughts on Kitty’s parenting.
He said in an interview in A&E’s The Menendez Brothers: Sins of the Children that he thought Kitty was “too permissive” with the boys when they were little and that he had “concerns” about how they were being raised.
Kitty and her husband were murdered on August 20, 1989, by their two sons but Erik and Lyle alleged in court that they were motivated by the sexual abuse they were being subjected to by their father.
Milton said in his A&E interview that he does not believe that the sexual abuse that Erik and Lyle alleged “transpired at all” and added that he thinks the claims are a “lot of bull”.
He added that he visited them in prison after their arrest because he thought they were innocent, but grew suspicious when he remembered how much they were “smiling”.
A Menendez re-sentencing
George Gascon, a district attorney, announced that he would be asking a judge to reconsider Erik and Lyle’s sentence in light of new evidence being discovered.

Also, Menudo boyband member Roy Rossello claimed in 2023 that he was also sexually abused by Jose.
George said that he hopes the brothers’ sentence would be reduced to life in prison with the possibility of parole or a 50 year sentence with the possibility of parole.
Milton’s objections
Milton is strongly opposed to his nephew’s release and his attorney Kathleen Cady spoke on his behalf, after George Gascón’s announcement.
She said: “It is unconscionable that Gascon, whose ethical obligation is to pursue justice with integrity, has ignored my multiple notifications about individuals coming forward with information that seriously questions the credibility of the so-called ‘new evidence’ in this case.
“Yet, Gascón has shown no interest in reviewing or investigating this evidence, turning a blind eye to potential flaws in his pursuit to rewrite history.”
She continued in her statement: “Despite numerous requests, Gascón has refused to inform Mr. Andersen of any decisions before holding press conferences
“Mr. Andersen has been left in the dark, forced to learn crucial updates about his sister’s case through the media, rather than being treated with the dignity and respect he deserves.”
Despite Milton’s reservations, the rest of the Menendez brothers’ family, including Milton’s own sister named Joan Andersen VanderMolen, support their release.
The brothers’ paternal aunt, Marta Cano, has previously argued that they brothers should be freed.
She said: “They’re not criminals.
“They were in so much shock and fear of their own lives that that’s what happened.”
Marta added: “How would I feel if someone had abused me all my life, and all of a sudden he’s angry in front of me and he’s coming to me?
“It’s a defense mechanism we all have.
