Paul Scholes leaps to Sir Alex Ferguson’s defence as he slams Man Utd over ‘disrespectful’ and ‘distasteful’ axing

PAUL SCHOLES has slammed Manchester United’s “distasteful” decision to end Sir Alex Ferguson’s lucrative ambassadorial contract.

The iconic Old Trafford midfielder jumped to his former manager’s defence before United drew 1-1 with Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Paul Scholes believes Fergie’s cost-cutting exit was ‘disrespectful’

Fergie will no longer receive his £2million-a-year salary

The legendary Scot, 82, had transitioned into a role as a global ambassador after ending his 26-year tenure back in 2013.

The job is believed to have been worth £2.13million-a-year.

But it emerged earlier this month that Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe informed Ferguson in a meeting that his contract would be axed.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Scholes said: “I thought it was a little bit distasteful for what that man has done for the club.

“Almost a little bit disrespectful but they’re new owners and new owners makes changes and they think what they’re doing is best for the club.

“If they think they can save whatever money I know it’s been talked about £2million, if they think they can use it elsewhere then so be it.

“This club owes a lot to Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s where it is now mainly because of the success he had for so many years.

“The timing of it was poor because you think they’re in a really bad run of form, could you have waited or done it before the season started, at the end of the season.

Ferguson will remain as a non-executive director and retain his place in the chief’s box and table for eight which he hosts at home matches.

He is the club’s most successful manager of all time winning 13 Premier Leagues, five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues at the helm at Old Trafford.

Ferguson’s formal employment will cease at the end of the current campaign as the club continue in their bid to cut costs.

The Ineos CEO and his team have embarked upon a root-and-branch financial review after taking a 27.7 per cent stake in the club in February.

The Red Devils’ latest figures take total losses over the past five years to more than £370m, according to BBC Sport.

Meanwhile, things aren’t exactly going well on the pitch after Erik ten Hag’s side were held to a third consecutive draw in Europe, leaving them 21st in the league standings.

They have now failed to win in European competition for an entire year, since a 1-0 home win over Copenhagen on October 24, 2023.

Amid the chaos, Mourinho was red-carded, Andre Onana pulled off a ridiculous double save and Erik ten Hag survived another tactical brainstorm despite Youssef En-Nesyri’s header cancelling out Christian Eriksen’s opener.

Man Utd ratings vs Fenerbahce: Onana saves the day for Red Devils as Lindelof has a stinker

MANCHESTER UNITED were held to a 1-1 draw by Fenerbahce on a disappointing night in Turkey.

Christian Eriksen broke the deadlock for Erik ten Hag’s side in the first half before En-Nesyri levelled soon after the break.

Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands in the second half after a touchline tantrum.

But the Red Devils could find a much-needed winner for Erik ten Hag.

SunSport’s Emillia Hawkins rates the performances…

Andre Onana – 7

Made an outstanding double save in the 37th minute to keep two attempts from Youssef En-Nesyri out.

His defenders could’ve done much better to prevent Fenerbahce’s goal.

Diogo Dalot – 5

Failed to track back at times and had his blushes saved in the first half by Ugarte, who made a crucial tackle on Dusan Tadic to prevent a goal.

Matthijs de Ligt – 6

Made some good blocks during the first half to keep Fenerbahce at bay.

Missed a few chances from set-pieces after the break.

Victor Lindelof – 4

Failed to follow En-Nesyri for Fenerbahce’s opening goal and made no attempt to win the ball.

Hauled off in the 54th minute.

Lisandro Martinez – 5

Like Lindelof, he did not apply any pressure to En-Nesyri for the hosts’ first goal. Poor communication from both.

Christian Eriksen – 7

Broke the deadlock for United with a great strike into the top-left corner from the edge of the box.

Manuel Ugarte – 6

Won the ball in the build-up to the first goal and saved Man Utd from conceding with a fantastic last-ditch tackle in front of goal in the 22nd minute.

Was lucky to avoid giving away a penalty after the break.

Noussair Mazraoui – 6

Didn’t look too out of place starting in the No10 position. Played a role in the build-up to the goal, passing the ball to Zirkzee who got the assist.

Eventually moved into left-back, allowing Martinez to move central.

Marcus Rashford – 5

Played out of preferred position and started on the right as opposed to the left.

Didn’t make too much of an impact on the game.

Alejandro Garnacho – 6

Played a key role in the build-up to Erikson’s goal by making a direct run into the box.

Challenged Dominik Livakovic a few times and looked lively.

Joshua Zirkzee – 5

A poor overall performance from the striker despite providing the assist for Eriksen’s opener.

Failed to make much of an impact and was hauled off in the 54th minute.

I went on an OAP tour with my mother-in-law and it ended in me becoming a madam in a brothel – I was bored of being mum

A GRAN who went on a day trip tour of a legal brothel with her mother-in-law – and ended up working as the madam there.

Dena Duff joined her “terrified” mother-in-law, who was in her 60s, on the “wild’ over-50s ladies” day out to tour the luxury Sheri’s Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, and enjoy a spot of lunch.

The 53-year-old, who says she didn’t know what a brothel was before she stepped over the threshold, accompanied her ‘terrified’ mother-in-law who refused to go alone back in 2006.

While exploring the licensed resort the incumbent madam pulled Dena to one side and offered her a job on the spot.

Mistaking it as an offer to become one of the courtesans a blushing Dena declined, however the lady in charge confirmed it would be a staff role.

After mulling over the offer the gran-of-five, who’d become bored of just being a full-time mum, decided to take her up on the offer.

Initially starting out as a part-time hostess in April 2006, she worked her way up to shift manager before taking over as Madam Dena in July 2007.

Having worked in political exit polling and done a stint in accounting, along with raising her kids, Dena claims her experience helps her be the best madam she can be.

Dena, from Pahrump, Nevada, US, said: “My mother-in-law is part of an organisation where retired women get together and do fun stuff. When they get together, they’re wild.

“They make me blush, and that takes a lot in my line of work.

“One of the things they put together was to go and tour Sheri’s Ranch.

“My mother-in-law was terrified, she didn’t want to go by herself, and asked me to go with her.

“I was clueless, I didn’t even know what a brothel was before this.”

After taking a tour, the madam who was working there at the time then took her aside to ask if she wanted a job.

“I said ‘no I don’t think I’d be interested, but thank-you you just made my day’.

“She said ‘well I was thinking more along the lines of staff, I think you’d make a great hostess’.

At the time, Dena was a stat-at-home mum and confessed it all started because she wanted a break from her daily life.

“I used to work as a ‘grunt’ in political exit polling and I also worked in accounting for a long period of time.

“When you pool that all together, alongside wrangling a bunch of children, I transferred those skills to my role as madam, it’s been very rewarding.”

“I was clueless, I didn’t even know what a brothel was before this.

Dena helps the courtesans at Sheri’s Ranch set goals, with many using the cash to change their lives for the better.

Dena: “Some women want to put a down payment on a house, pay their way through school, or save to start their own business.

“Sex work provides these women with an opportunity to achieve those aspirations.

“I’m very proud of them because it isn’t just laying down and banging, it’s the experience.”

What is a brothel and are the legal in the UK?

What is a brothel?

A brothel is any premises, including a private flat or massage parlour, which is used by more than one worker for prostitution. If just one individual sells sex in a building, it’s not a brothel.

Are brothels legal in the UK?

Prostitutions itself is legal in England and Wales. However, soliciting in public, kerb crawling, pimping, and owning or managing a brothel are all crimes.

Some MPs want to see brothels decriminalised because the think the current law could discourage sex workers from working together in groups – which is generally safer for them.

In Sweden, for example, buying sex is a criminal act, but selling it is not.

Arsenal vs Liverpool preview

Both Arsenal and Liverpool return to domestic duties following their Champions League exploits midweek.

The Gunners were far from their brilliant best as they edged past Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at the Emirates.

Liverpool, meanwhile, looked more accomplished as they extended their 100% winning record in the Champions League after beating RB Leipzig by the same scoreline.

But a tougher assignment lies ahead this weekend in a clash that could have huge implications on the Premier League title race.

Arsenal sit in third position with 17 points from a possible 24 having suffered a shock defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

There wasn’t huge cause for concern given it was Arsenal’s first defeat for 17 matches, and they played most of the clash without dismissed centre-back William Saliba.

But there will be concern over their swathe of absentees.

Saliba, arguably their most important defender, serves a one-match suspension, while Mikel Arteta revealed that Bukayo Saka was “unlikely” to feature.

Riccardo Calafiori sustained a knee injury during Tuesday’s Champions League victory, while it’s unclear if Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber are available for selection.

There are some reasons to be cheerful though with Arsenal unbeaten in their last four Premier League games against Liverpool.

Liverpool are looking like a very well-oiled machine as they sit top of the division with the only blemish on their record that surprise defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool are the first team in the club’s history to win each of their opening six away games of a season.

They’ve won eight on the spin in all competitions whilst conceding the fewest goals than any other team in the Premier League this season (3), while they also have the lowest xG against total (6.2).

Arsenal vs Liverpool preview betting tips and predictions

Away win

I think the absence of William Saliba could be pivotal in this weekend’s encounter.

Since making his debut, Saliba has missed 11 Premier League matches. In those games, Arsenal’s win rate dropped from 74% to 45%, while their average goals per game rose to 1.6 from 0.8.

Mikel Arteta’s side may also be without the influential Bukayo Saka, who’s created a whopping 27 league chances this season — more than Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz combined.

A weaker defence and less potent attack could well lead to Arsenal’s first back-to-back league defeats since 31st December 2023.

  • Liverpool to win at 15/8 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE

Goals?

Not in my opinion. Liverpool aren’t blowing sides away this season and have only won ONE of their last FIVE by more than a one-goal margin.

It’s a more controlled Liverpool this season and that’s evident from their defensive stats having conceded just THREE league goals in eight outings with the lowest xG against total.

Arsenal’s xG against total is also pretty impressive given they’ve had three red cards this season, while the pair have combined for EIGHT clean sheets.

Bobby Zamora has taken up a striker consultant role at Brighton[/caption]

He will take up the role of ‘striker consultant’ on Fabian Hurzeler’s staff.

The two-cap England man is set to work with Albion’s forwards twice a week to try to sharpen their work in the box.

Zamora said: “I’m pleased to be back to help the strikers to achieve their goals, working on all elements of football on and off the pitch.

“Hopefully I can play a part in helping the club achieve further success.”

Technical director David Weir added: “Brighton fans need no introduction to Bobby.

“They know just how clinical he was as a player and about his ability in the penalty box. We feel he can help our attacking players in that regard.”

Brighton have made a great start to season under Hurzeler and sit fifth with 15 points from eight games.

Danny Welbeck has looked revitalised under the new boss with five goals in eight games and could benefit from Zamora’s arrival.

However he may have to wait to work with Zamora after suffering an injury against Newcastle last weekend.

The striker was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher after being hurt in a challenge with Fabian Schar.
