Europe’s biggest SNAKE makes its way to Britain and could be living in YOUR walls

EUROPE’S biggest snake has made its way to Britain and could be living in your walls.

The aesculapian snake, which can grow up to 6ft long, can usually be found in the warmer parts of Europe, such as southern France and Italy.

The aesculapian snake has now been found in parts of the UK[/caption]

It has even been discovered in Iran.

But now the reptiles have been found in parts of the UK and it’s due to a “reliance on human habitats,” new research has revealed.

The huge snakes have recently been found in a church roof and inside the walls of a care home.

There are two known populations of aesculapians in the UK – around London Zoo in Regent’s Park and around the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

The snakes are not venomous or dangerous to humans.

They prey on rodents such as rats and mice, crushing them to death.

The new research, which was overseen by Wolfgang Wuster, professor of zoology at Bangor University, indicates how the snakes found in Wales have managed to adapt to the colder environment.

A total of 21 snakes were captured and fitted with radio trackers, to monitor and study their movements over a two year period.

The study said: “We observed aesculapian snakes actively seeking and returning to use inhabited buildings and… climbing large structures to access the attics and wall cavities of houses.

“We revealed a particular preference for buildings in male snakes, while females preferred woodland.”

Prof Wuster said that while aesculapian snakes are found reasonably close to humans across Europe, they appear to come much closer in the UK.

He said: “This predilection for human habitats is striking.

“If you work in places like India, you quite often find snakes in houses. That’s just not something that happens in the UK.

“And yet, with these aesculapians, we’re finding them in people’s lofts.

“You find snake skins hanging off the drain pipes in an old folks home, things like that.

“It’s quite an unusual thing to be doing in Britain, this sort of suburban snake hunting.”

Prof Wuster reassured Brits though, adding that it was unlikely they would stumble across one under the sofa as the snakes had not been found inside a room but they preferred to stay in spaces where humans rarely entered.

However, they differ from the UK’s native snakes by using buildings as their homes, whereas native varieties avoid urban areas.

The study added: “The adder and smooth snake are rarely found in human-dominated environments.”

Grass snakes often find use compost heaps and garden ponds for their habitat “but their use of anthropogenic features is significantly less extensive.”

Researchers estimate there are about 80 snakes in Wales, but added they were extremely difficult to find, as it took around eight hours of searching for each one.

Prof Wuster also confirmed there was no evidence the snakes are causing any harm or damage.

He said: “They’re not a species that’s taking over and changing its habitat and damaging other species, like American grey squirrels, or Japanese knotweed.

“At the end of the day, it’s a European species interacting with other European species.

“So we have a reasonable basis for saying it would probably co-exist fairly well with our existing fauna.”

The study has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Pete Wicks’ ex says there’s ‘no smoke without fire’ amid Strictly star’s love triangle – ‘even men go silly over him’

TOWIE star Chloe Sims has given her unfiltered opinion on her ex Pete Wicks being involved in a Strictly love triangle.

Celebrity dancer Pete is said to have fallen for his pro-dancer Jowita Przystał – despite secretly dating Love Island’s Maura Higgins.

Chloe and Pete were best pals on Towie when they stunned fans by revealing their surprise romance.

The pair had been sleeping together for two years – before eventually having a huge fallout.

Chloe has since moved to America and is starring in a hit reality show with her sisters Frankie and Demi.

Reflecting on Pete’s romantic charm, Chloe told MailOnline: “Pete is a right bloody charmer, even men go silly for him, straight men.

“I used to look at him and think, what has this guy got? It’s so bizarre, men love him, women love him, older women, younger women, he’s just got something, this charm about him.

“I can see why all these women would be linked to him, they probably are, there’s no smoke without fire.

‘To look at him from afar and if you didn’t know him, he’s not my type in a million years, not even close, but whatever he has got, some magic power, I do not know.

“But he must have that to even be on Strictly because they publicly said they would never have Towie on there so that’s how strong his charm is.”

Despite rumours of a romance with close pal Maura after they were spotted snogging, Pete is said to look “completely in love” with Jowita.

Previously gushing about his pro partner, Pete said: “Jowita is just – I could not have got a better partner.”

Strictly Curse - The Lowdown

STRICTLY Come Dancing's latest series has already been hit by rumours of a BBC show 'curse' - yet what is it?

A host of Strictly Come Dancing stars have been struck by the Strictly Curse during the past two decades.

This is where celebrities who may or may not be attached in the outside world become more than friends with their professional partners.

A total of 20 relationships are said to have been impacted so far over the show’s 20 years.

It has seen relationships crumble with dance floor romances and punishing rehearsal schedules to blame.

This includes the partnerships of Louise and Jamie Redknapp as well as Kevin Clifton and Karen Hauer.

Controversially, Judge Craig Revel Horwood once said of the curse: “I think of it as a blessing, to be honest. One person is married, the other one had a girlfriend but my point in this entire thing is: if you come on Strictly, sometimes you are in a relationship that is not working anyway.

“There has to be something wrong in your relationship before it all goes awry.”

Series one winner Brendan Cole left his fiancé, fellow Strictly professional Camilla Dallerup, during filming for the very first series in spring 2004.

Brendan was said to have fallen for his celebrity partner and inaugural winner Natasha Kaplinsky, although the duo didn’t confirm they were romantically involved.

Pete added: “I can’t sit here and go ‘she’s my life’ – we don’t know each other that well. But what I do know is that she makes me feel good.

“And that is really important and hopefully I make her feel good and that’s a really nice place to be, you know what I mean?”

We’re homeless after our house was destroyed in horror blaze – we couldn’t call 999 to stop it… we just watched it burn

A DISTRAUGHT mum-of-three and her kids only have the “clothes on their backs” after their home was destroyed in a horror blaze.

When Katie-Anne Hone, 26, popped out to do the school run she never imagined she’d return to see her southeast London flat engulfed in flames.

The family’s home, in Orpington, was destroyed within 25 minutes by the fire and none of their belongings could be saved due to an asbestos risk.

Now three-year-old tot Lily, her sister Isabelle, five, and baby Archie have lost everything.

She is so upset, she keeps saying ‘my kids haven’t even got a bed’. They have been sleeping in a spare bed, but they haven’t got a bed to call their own and that is really upsetting her

Michelle HoneKate's mum

Relatives have put the young family up while they wait for their home to be repaired – which will take up to 12 weeks.

Kate’s mum Michelle Hone, 51, said her daughter has been absolutely “distraught” since that day.

She said: “Kate left to take her eldest child to school and came back to alarms going off. Their flat was billowing with black smoke.

“She was running up and down the street trying to get people to open their doors and ring the fire brigade because their phones were in the flat.

“By the time I got there the fire engines had arrived and the fire was put out.

“They were told that they couldn’t go back in to retrieve anything because it was all covered in asbestos.

“The damage is extensive. The kitchen is completely ruined and the ceiling was taken down. Everything has to be cleaned and repainted.

“She has been quite traumatised by it. She is absolutely distraught.

“She is so upset, she keeps saying ‘my kids haven’t even got a bed’. They have been sleeping in a spare bed, but they haven’t got a bed to call their own and that is really upsetting her.”

The firefighters couldn’t identify the cause of the blaze due to the amount of damage but they confirmed it was accidental.

The property was not insured, so Kate will have to pay to replace everything.

Michelle added: “They just spent so much money on the flat where they redecorated it all and put all new flooring down.

“The flat was lovely. She really worked hard to get it how she wanted. Now all of that is ruined.

“She is very emotional, she cries at the drop of a pin at the moment.

“The kids don’t understand, they want to go home. They don’t know that their toys have all been ruined.

“Kate had literally what was on their backs, they didn’t even have a nappy or a bottle for the baby.

Samantha HoneKate's aunt

“She was only out of the house for 25 minutes and it did that much damage.”

Kate’s aunt, Samantha Hone, has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family.

The local community have rallied to support them, leaving bags of donations.

Samantha added: “People have been so kind, they have been dropping toys off and clothes to help them out.

“Every time the kids come round I have more donations, so they think it is Christmas already.

“It is going to take her a while to get back up on her feet.

“She has got to replace literally everything down to knives and forks.

“The GoFundMe page is to help her start again. It took her five years to get everything together and she now has to do it all again.

“The community have been absolutely brilliant. I am constantly getting messages with offers for bits and pieces.”

I moved into a tiny home one year ago but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be – doing laundry is total hell for starters

MORE and more people are opting to ditch their spacious homes in favour of something much smaller in a bid to save their hard earned cash.

But according to one influencer, living in a tiny home isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The lack of storage in the home has become a real issue[/caption]

Roksana Janiszewska, who goes by Roxi, moved into her tiny home along with her partner one year ago after building it from scratch.

Like many, moving into the tiny home was a money saving move for Roxi, who has made a name for herself online by posting videos on her YouTube account Roxxsaurus.

Alongside her partner the influencer is in the process of building her forever dream home, so added the tiny home to the site to save money during construction.

Despite the tiny home being kitted out with all the mod-cons you could want and being specifically built for purpose, Roxi confessed tiny living isn’t for her.

“It’s a pretty small space however it’s been strategically designed to house everything we could possibly need,” she explained in a recent video.

But has time has gone on Roxi confessed she has realised what she’s missing out on.

The main issue is the laundry set up, since there’s no space to dry clothes making it hard to keep up with washing clothes.

It’s something that’s not really discussed when it comes to tiny homes, Roxi said, but it’s become the bane of her life.

In fact, the influencer confessed that last winter she was left with an “embarrassing mound” of laundry.

“As quick as we were doing the laundry it wasn’t drying fast enough,” she explained.

The situation got so bad that Roxi “dreaded putting new clothes on” since she knew she’s be left with more laundry to get through.

The lack of storage space in the pad has also been a huge problem, and it’s something Roxi said she’d change if she could redesign the home.

Although there is some small cupboards for cleaning products, there’s no where near enough space for other random bits and bobs.

The wardrobe situation has become overwhelming too, and clothes are literally falling out of the small space.

And while going for a tiny home with floor to ceiling windows seemed like a great idea at the time, the space gets far too hot in the summer, Roxi addded.

“We love the view, we love the light that comes through it, but we do not love the heat.

“As you can imagine, on a hot summers day it feels like a greenhouse in here,” she said.

That said, there are some positives to living small too, according to Roxi.

Because the tiny home was built to order, Roxi was able to position it exactly how she wanted to get the most light.

And the open plan designed has been a huge plus too, she added, since it makes the most out of the room.

After sharing her tiny home experience, people were keen to help Roxi make the most of the space and suggested some things she could do to upgrade her home.

One commented on the video: “I know the sofa is from your old house, but for this space I would of got one with storage inside of it.

“Also you have room under your table – you can either get some wood planks and place them on those bars, it will create another level for putting things there or you can get some slim boxes for under it.

And a second wrote: “To dry your laundry easier and quicker you might want to get dehumidifier and do it in the bathroom.

“Also you can fit reflective film on your windows to block most of the sunlight coming through. Hope that helps.”

Premier League club announce plans to redevelop 53-year-old stand in ‘exciting project’ with hotel and aquatics centre

IPSWICH TOWN’s stunning redevelopment plans for Portman Road have taken a huge leap forward.

The Premier League club are planning to modernise the iconic Cobbold Stand.

The project has been dubbed a ‘masterplan’[/caption]

And the improvements are now set to be given the green light after the Tractor Boys struck an “in-principle agreement” to buy land adjacent to their ground.

Ipswich Borough Council said specific terms are “yet to be finalised” but the club is set to buy part of the New Portman Road car park that backs onto the Cobbold Stand.

Back in March, the local authority unveiled a “masterplan” to regenerate the area.

In a statement they said: “It features plans for an aquatics centre, a multi-storey car park, a hotel and designated space for Ipswich Town Football Club’s development and expansion.”

The current Crown Pools will be replaced by a state-of-the-art facility and gym, while a seven-story car park comes in for the current 500 spaces.

Incredible computer generated images show what the area might look like in the future.

The council labelled it an “exciting project and partnership”.

But they have admitted the plans for a new and improved aquatics centre are “ambitious”.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

The Cobbold Stand, which was constructed in 1971, is the oldest at the stadium and is where away fans are positioned.

Ipswich chief Mark Ashton previously said they will lose 4,000 of the 30,000 capacity for 18 months during the rebuild.

Kieran McKenna‘s side currently sit 17th in the Premier League are still waiting for their first win.

What we know about the 'new' Old Trafford

MANCHESTER UNITED plan to build a new stadium rather than redevelop Old Trafford.

The decision was made after a number of fact-finding missions to other stadiums including the Bernabeu and Nou Camp.

The cost of the project is expected to be a staggering £2billion.

A capacity of 100,000 is expected.

It is felt that a club of United’s standing should have a new state-of-the-art facility.

The new stadium will be built on land adjacent to the Red Devils’ current home.

United are looking to not only build a stadium but regenerate the area of Trafford where the ground will stand.

There had been plans to KEEP Old Trafford rather than demolish it, and use it as a scaled down second venue.

However, it’s looking increasing likely that it will in fact be entirely demolished.

The club consulted with 30,000 fans about what to do and believe there is roughly a 50-50 split on staying or moving.

The club have appointed the architects Foster + Partners to come up with a “masterplan”. The company were behind Wembley Stadium.

Old Trafford has been United’s home since 1910.

The target is for completion by 2030.

Prime Reading is a sub-set of Kindle Unlimited and offers a smaller collection of titles that is regularly updated.

The BBC has commissioned two more series of critically acclaimed comedy We Might Regret This.

But the Beeb has no regrets about making these 12 episodes, as the show has been critically acclaimed for its disability representation, and described as “groundbreaking comedy”.

Critics have praised its “trailblazing portrayal of a disabled woman on screen”.

It was also lauded for its “light-hearted laughs and dark, jagged humour” from its “superb cast”.

Viewers from series one recall the lead character is Freya (Kyla Harris), a 30-something disabled Canadian artist.

We followed the tetraplegic artist as she relocated to London to be with her partner Abe (Darren Boyd), a 50-something straight-laced lawyer.

Freya requires full time round the clock care from a dedicated Personal Assistant (PA).

This means that every romantic moment and domestic dispute has a witness and the intimate role needed someone who could handle the pressure.

In series one, viewers saw Freya invite her chaotic and outspoken best-mate Jo (Elena Saurel) to take on the job.

Alongside Abe’s ex-wife Jane (Sally Phillips) and wayward adult son Levi (Edward Blumel) they make a messy blended family.

The hilarious series is co-created by Kyla Harris and Lee Getty, who also stars.

The pair issued a joint statement, saying: “Season one was just the tip of the comedy iceberg and we’re beyond grateful to the BBC for their continued support and commitment to exploring disability, messy relationships and unparalleled intimacy on screen.”

Ash Atalla, CEO of Roughcut, adds: “A show both full of heart and close to our hearts. So happy we get to make more of this series – both complex and silly, surely the best place to be.”

Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy added: “We’re proud to commission more episodes of We Might Regret This. Kyla, Lee, and the team have tapped into something truly unique—crafting comedy from deeply personal moments with such sharpness and heart.

Best BBC comedies

We look back at some of the best to ever grace the screen.

Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) – Only two series were made of the beloved institution. However, the cultural impact of the series starring John Cleese and Connie Booth spans decades. It follows rude and intolerant Basil Fawlty (Cleese) as he attempts to improve the reputation of his hotel.

Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003) – The show was crowned by some as the best British sitcom of all time by a TV poll in 2004. Seven series were broadcast on BBC until 1991 with additional sporadic Christmas specials airing until 2003. Sir David Jason starred as ambitious market trader Derek “Del Boy” Trotter whilst Nicholas Lyndhurst played his younger half-brother Rodney. Set in working-class Peckham in south-east London, it follows the highs and lows of the lives of the Trotters’, in particular their brazen attempts to get rich.

Blackadder (1983 – 1989) – Four series were made of the iconic show, created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. Each series spans a different historical period as anti-hero Edmund Blackadder (Atkinson) tries to better himself in each society. Accompanied by his dogsbody Baldrick (Tony Robinson), trouble always ensues. A TV poll in 2004 found that Blackadder was voted the second-best British sitcom of all time

Absolutely Fabulous (1992 – 2012) – Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley star as failing PR guru Edina ‘Eddie’ Monsoon and alcoholic fashionista Patsy Stone. The pair embark on heavy-drinking sessions and abuse drugs in a desperate attempt to stay ‘hip’. Eddie constantly chases bizarre fads and fails to lose weight whilst her disappointed and neglected daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha) looks on.

Little Britain (2003 – 2006) – The premise is simple. A sketch show which features different British people from all walks of life that are engaged in all sorts of comical scenarios. Starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the pair created iconic pop culture characters. Viewers loved obnoxious council estate teenager Vicky Pollard, morbidly obese scrounger Bubbles Devere, slimming coach Marjorie Dawes, despondent office worker Carol Beer, disgraced politician Sir Norman Fry, of course the iconic Lou and Andy!

The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2015) – A sketch show starring the likes of Catherine Tate. She made iconic characters such as rowdy schoolgirl Lauren Cooper with her line ‘Am I bovvered?’. Other characters featured Bernie the nurse, the aga saga woman, complaining couple Janice and Ray, and of course her infamous ‘Nan’, Joannie Taylor. The last character herself spawned multiple specials and even a movie.

Gavin and Stacey (2007 – Present) The series tells the story of Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page). The pair embarked on an online and telephone romance for six months. But when they finally decide to be together properly, their friends and family get in the way. Ruth Jones and James Corden created the beloved show, which has been going for over a decade. The 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched comedy in 17 years and the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade.

“There’s still so much laughter to uncover in Freya’s world, and we can’t wait to see how they push the boundaries of comedy and character even further.

British Vogue described it as “BBC’s smartest, sharpest sitcom since Fleabag”.

The Daily Telegraph added that the series was “… so richly layered it is like an elaborate lasagne, one with an intense, varied filling of sarcasm, pain, light-hearted laughs and dark, jagged humour”.
