Woman shares hack for making pumpkin carving MUCH easier for kids & £1 buy in your make-up bag to make them last longer
CARVING pumpkins may seem like a fun family activity but it can often involve way more work that you signed up for.
One mum shared her go-to hack that will make your Halloween so much easier.
A mum-of-two shared a pumpkin carving hack she uses to make the process easier for her children (stock image)[/caption]In her viral video, TikTok user Keisha (@keisha7788) demonstrated the quick trick for her audience.
The mum-of-two also revealed the budget buy you can use to keep your pumpkins looking fresh until spooky season is over.
After cutting the top of her pumpkin and removing the strands and seeds within, Keisha shared the technique she uses to perfect her carving the first time around.
“A mum hack I wish I knew sooner, if your littles struggle to carve pumpkins use cookie cutters,” she told her followers.
She lined up a dinosaur-shaped cutter on the front of her cutter and used a mallet to push it through.
The result was a perfectly-shaped dinosaur silhouette in the front of the pumpkin.
She advised her audience to opt for “heavy duty” cookie cutters for the best results.
Keisha also showed her audience a hack she uses to prolong the shelf life of her carved pumpkins.
The mum revealed that she uses “Vaseline to help the pumpkins last longer.”
She rubbed a dollop of the petroleum jelly around the edges of the cut area.
The TikToker also applied some of the product to the interior of the pumpkin.
If you don’t already have Vaseline tucked away in your make-up bag, you can pick it up for just £1 from Savers.
The sticky substance helps to seal the inside of the pumpkin from the air, which is what causes it to rot.
TikTok users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.
“I struggle to carve pumpkins. Thank you for this. My kids will love this,” wrote one impressed viewer.
How to save on Halloween
CUT-OUTS WON’T KEEP: Once carved, pumpkins last just three to five days before they start to rot. So wait until a day or two before Halloween to carve yours, to ensure you won’t have to buy a replacement.
CHILLING CARVINGS: Carve your pumpkin right first time. Download free templates from Hobbycraft to help ensure no slip-ups.
DEVILISHY CHEAP DECORATIONS: Create spooky spider webs using old string or rope.
PAY LESS FOR FACE PAINTS: Cut costs by using your old eyeliners and eyeshadows, and dab on some talc when you need a ghostly white shade.
CUT-PRICE CANDY: Before you buy sweets to give out as treats, clear out your cupboards and see what you have. If you need more, shop bulk deals and compare the price per kilo before you buy.
PETRIFYING POT LUCK: Ask your guests to each bring a delicious themed dish to your party to keep hosting costs down.
SPINE-CHILLING TUNES: Turn to YouTube for a frighteningly good free playlist. There are dozens of channels with hour-long music mixes.
HOLD A SPOOKY SWISH: Swishing — or clothes-swapping with friends — is an easy way to get a new wardrobe. Hold a spooky swish before Halloween to trade costumes for kids and adults.
FRIGHTENING FREEBIES: Sign up for a free local Halloween event. Check your local Nextdoor or Facebook pages, or search eventbrite.co.uk for ideas.
BLOODY GOOD DEAL: Don’t fork out for expensive fake blood. Make your own edible version instead. You can use it for cakes and to decorate costumes.
SHOP ON NOV 1: Be organised and bag the bargains for next year by hitting the shops the day after Halloween. Remember to buy your kids’ costumes a size larger to allow for growth.
“This is the best mum hack for this Halloween season,” said another follower.
“Wait whaaat? I’ve been struggling my whole life for nothing, my jack-o’-lanterns always turn out bad,” commented a third person.
“This is so smart! What a great way to carve pumpkins for Halloween,” wrote another person.
“Oh my God, such a fun idea! My kids lose patience carving,” said one parent.
“Oh my God, yes, I have been doing my jack-o’-lanterns like this for yeeeaaaars and someone else is finally talking about it, it’s so much fun this way,” wrote another commenter.

The 40p common supplement that could slash risk of killer cancer – and 4 ways to get more in your diet
A POPULAR vitamin, vital for bone health, has been shown to significantly slow one of the world’s most common cancers.
Prostate cancer affects one in seven men worldwide – in the UK it’s the most common cancer in men.
A supplement vital for healthy bones and blood clotting has been shown to fight prostate cancer[/caption] Sir Chris Hoy shared his prostate cancer is terminal, after first announcing he was being treated for the disease in February[/caption]Just this week, Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy revealed his prostate cancer is terminal, having been told he has just two to four years left to live.
He first announced in February he was being treated for the disease.
He told the Sunday Times the cancer had spread from his prostate to his bones, including his shoulder, pelvis, ribs and spine.
In most men, prostate cancer is treatable, but in some cases it resists all known therapies and and can prove deadly.
Now, a new study has suggested menadione, also known as vitamin K3, could offer a ray of hope.
Research carried out by Professor Lloyd Trotman at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York state found the pro-oxidant vitamin, also found in leafy greens, slowed prostate cancer progression in mice.
Back in 2001, the National Cancer Institute’s SELECT trial sought to determine if an antioxidant vitamin E supplement could successfully treat or prevent prostate cancer.
The trial involving 35,000 men was planned to last up to 12 years.
But, after just three years, participants were told to stop taking their supplements.
Not only had vitamin E failed to slow or prevent prostate cancer – more men taking the supplement started to get the disease.
Seeing these results, Prof Trotman thought if an antioxidant failed, maybe a pro-oxidant would work.
And his new findings in mice show just that.
When mice with prostate cancer were given menadione, it messed with the cancer’s survival processes.
Prof Trotman’s team discovered menadione kills prostate cancer cells by depleting a lipid called PI(3)P, which works like an ID tag.
Without it, cells stop recycling incoming materials and eventually explode.
Prof Trotman said: “It’s like a transport hub, like JFK. If everything that goes in is immediately de-identified, nobody knows where the airplanes should go next.
“New stuff keeps coming in, and the hub starts to swell. This ultimately leads to the cell bursting.”
This caused the cancer’s progression to slow significantly in mice.
Prof Trotman now hopes to see the experiment translated to pilot studies in human prostate cancer patients.
He said: “Our target group would be men who get biopsies and have an early form of the disease diagnosed. We wonder if they start to take the supplement, whether we would be able to slow that disease down.”
Prof Trotman’s research suggests menadione may also prove effective against myotubular myopathy, a rare condition that prevents muscle growth in infant boys.
Those diagnosed rarely live beyond early childhood.
Prof Trotman’s lab has found that depleting PI(3)P with menadione can double the lifespan of mice with this condition.
If the results hold up in humans, it would mean that men with prostate cancer can enjoy a better quality of life and more time with their families.
It could also mean more precious time for children born with an incurable disease.
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
Vitamin K is found in many foods, with the main sources being:
- green leafy vegetables – such as broccoli and spinach
- vegetable oils
- cereal grains
Small amounts can also be found in meat and dairy foods.
Vitamin K is also available in supplement form – as a standalone supplement or found in many multivitamins.
Supplements such as Viridian’s vitamin K capsules (£11.81 for 30 capsules) can be purchased online.
How much vitamin K do you need?
Adults need approximately 1 microgram a day of vitamin K for each kilogram of their body weight to ensure healthy blood clotting and healthy bones.
For example, someone who weighs 65kg would need 65 micrograms a day of vitamin K.
You should be able to get all the vitamin K you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.
Any vitamin K your body does not need immediately is stored in the liver for future use, so you don’t need it in your diet every day.
If you take vitamin K supplements, don’t take too much as this might be harmful.
Taking 1mg or less of vitamin K supplements a day is unlikely to cause any harm.

Michelin-starred chef who appeared on MasterChef suddenly closes restaurant & cancels all future bookings after relaunch
A MICHELIN-starred chef who previously appeared on MasterChef has suddenly closed his restaurant.
Peter Sanchez-Iglesias said the Bristol-based Italian restaurant, Casa Bristol, was closing until further notice.
Peter Sanchez-Iglesias appeared on last year’s series of MasterChef[/caption] Casa is an Italian restaurant in Bristol[/caption] It serves authentic pasta dishes[/caption]The West Country restaurateur, who also owns the Spanish-Mexican restaurant Decimo in London, guided contestants through a cooking challenge there in last year’s series of amateur MasterChef.
His third restaurant, Paco Tapas in Bristol, which lost its Michelin star this year.
A statement on the restaurant’s website said: “At this moment, we are closed for future bookings. If you’re looking to book a restaurant, please check out our sister restaurant, Paco Tapas.
“All vouchers for Casa will be honoured at Paco Tapas.
“If you have any concerns or queries, please contact us at info@casamiarestaurant.co.uk.”
Customers rushed to Reddit to discuss why the mysterious closure had occurred.
One was keen to praise the restaurant’s legacy in the area.
They wrote: “What you do have to say is that this restaurant has improved the quality of food served in restaurants across the city and many chefs have gone through this restaurant become top-tier chefs and gone on to open their own restaurants or projects in the city.
“If it is closed for good this restaurant has an excellent legacy.
“Only eaten here once, but one of the dishes was the best tortellini I have ever eaten.”
Another speculated that Peter was “bored on Bristol”, with a third echoing that he had perhaps “been more focused on London at Decimo”.
Peter’s parents were also in the business – opening their restaurant Casamia in 1999.
Peter worked there from the age of 16 along with his brother Jonray, eventually leading it to its first Michelin star in 2009.
After Casamia’s closure in 2022, Peter decided to relaunch and rebrand the restaurant as Casa.
It was designed to have a more casual vibe, with authentic Italian comfort dishes like potato ravioli and mushroom ragu.
But the joint never achieved the Michelin-star status of its predecessor.
Casa Bristol has been contacted for comment.
