New rare 50p coin sparks major bidding war as collector sells 17 with same detail for £1,700 – & even postage is pricey
A BAG of the rarest 50p coins in circulation has been sold for £1,700 in a fierce bidding war.
Coin collectors scrapped over the change decorated with an Atlantic Salmon on one side and the King’s portrait on the other.
The seller even made a pretty penny on the postage, charging £10 for the tiny package.
The unopened plastic bag is how new coins are packaged and delivered to UK banks and post offices.
The Atlantic salmon coin is now the rarest coin in circulation, according to the Royal Mint.
The coin maker, based in Wales, confirmed that just 200,000 of the 50ps were released.
This has knocked the 2009 Kew Gardens off the top spot, which had 210,000 made.
The famous Kew Gardens design features the site’s iconic Chinese Pagoda and displays the years 1759 and 2009.
In the UK, the 50p is the most collectible coin and has had over 100 different designs featured on its “tails” side.
Rebecca Morgan, of the Royal Mint said coin collectors were excited about the new release.
She said: “2023 marked pivotal changes for the nation’s coinage, including the introduction of coins celebrating King Charles III’s coronation entering circulation.
“Finding these special designs, like the Atlantic salmon, in your change is a win for all collectors.”
According to Changechecker, the piece, initially worth around £50, has shot up to £150 in the secondary market, with prices expected to rise further.
A Changechecker spokesperson said: “The circulation 2023 Salmon 50p has knocked the legendary Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot, meaning Britain has a new rarest 50p for the first time in 15 years.
“It was announced on October 7, 2024 that just 200,000 2023 Salmon 50ps entered circulation in November 2023.
“Due to it’s incredibly low mintage, just one in 335 people in the UK could have the chance of finding one in their change.
“When the Kew Gardens 50p was first issued in 2009, collectors didn’t initially realise just how rare it would be, and many people who found one in their change parted with it and later kicked themselves.
“Now, 15 years later, the Kew Gardens coin regularly sells for between £150 to £250 on the secondary market, so it’s no surprise that they’re already selling on the secondary market for up to £200.
Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis spat on floor in ‘disgusting display of contempt’ – but gives outrageous excuse for it
NOTTINGHAM FOREST owner Evangelos Marinakis was handed his five-match stadium ban after spitting on the floor in a “disgusting display of contempt”.
But he produced an outrageous excuse for his behaviour.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was banned after spitting on the floor near the referees[/caption]Marinakis was charged following the 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham in September.
The FA confirmed the lengthy stadium ban last week – ensuring he would not take his seats in the stands until the home clash with Ipswich on November 30.
But now the incredible written reasons for the verdicts have been released.
And it is claimed Marinakis spat on the ground in the tunnel when the referees approached following the full-time whistle.
The disciplinary panel concluded: “The only reasonable inference we can draw from our rejection of EM’s explanation for the spit is that EM deliberately spat in a disrespectful and disgusting display of contempt towards the match officials.
“In our view, there is no other credible explanation for his conduct.”
But Marinkas’ defence left many baffled – suggesting he had simply coughed.

Arlene Phillips hints at a return to Strictly after being fired from judging panel 15 years ago
ARLENE Phillips has teased a shock return to Strictly Come Dancing – 15 years after she was axed from the judging panel.
Following her departure from Strictly in 2009 Arlene, 81, claimed she only found out when a radio show called asking for her thoughts on the shake-up.
The former judge was axed in 2009[/caption]Arlene had been an original judge ont he show, alongside Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli.
But she was replaced by Alesha Dixon, who lifted the Glitterball trophy in 2007.
Despite this it seems there’s no hard feelings on Arlene’s part as she’s suggested she could make a return to the BBC One competition.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun at the Pride of Britain Awards, she said: “I’ve been filming something today, which will be coming out soon and is hilarious.
“It’s something to do with dancing.”
When asked if she has any plans for a Strictly comeback, Arlene teased: “Maybe a little chat…”
Earlier this year Arlene discussed the impact being fired from the show had on her.
She told The Guardian: “More than knocking my confidence, I think it swirled around me, and I thought, ‘I need to find myself.’
“I needed all the mental preparation that I could muster to go, ‘Hang on a minute – you had a big career before this and you’ve got work lined up’.
“I was a grown-up when I did that show, so I resent that the BBC didn’t come to me as soon as they had the thought.”
Alesha quit after the 2011 series and was replaced by Darcey Bussell.
The current judging panel is made up of Craig, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke.
Neighbour slashed privacy fence with ‘BOLT CUTTERS’ to make dangerous path to road – now thugs speed through on bikes
VANDALS smashed down a fence with bolt cutters to create a crafty shortcut for thugs.
The cut-through is putting residents in danger, with “several near misses” with bikes and scooters zooming in and out.
Cllr Sean Dillow is calling for the fence to be fixed[/caption]Councillor Sean Dillow, for Kempshott and Buckskin in Basingstoke, is demanding for the “blatant vandalism” to be resolved.
“I’ll be calling on the local authorities to replace the fencing to close this unofficial cut through,” he told Basingstoke Gazette.
“There needs to be a review of the situation and discussions on any potential long-term solutions to ensure that anyone causing further vandalism to the fencing is identified.”
The fence will be rebuilt to last, according to a spokesperson for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
They added: “The council installed fencing in Highlands Road to block this cut-through.
“Unfortunately, this was vandalised which has been temporarily repaired and reinforced in advance of a heavier-duty solution being installed on Monday.”
A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council said the land between the affected roads are “not part of the public highway” it is “not responsible for its repair.”
The Sun has approached Cllr Dillow and Hampshire County Council for comment.
Body found in hunt for mum Victoria Taylor whose belongings were discovered on riverbank after she vanished from home
A BODY has been found in the hunt for a missing mum whose belongings were discovered on a riverbank after she vanished.
Victoria Taylor disappeared from her home in Malton, North Yorkshire, at around 9am on September 30.

Police launched a huge search for Victoria after her personal belongings were found close to the River Derwent.
Officers today revealed a body has now tragically been found.
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox confirmed the discovery was made at 11.45am today near to where Victoria’s possessions were found.
He added: “While today’s outcome is not what anyone wished for, Victoria’s family asked me to express thanks to those who supported North Yorkshire Police and the emergency services.
“Our thoughts remain very much with them at this time.”
Victoria, who is mum to a two-year-old daughter, is understood to have been seen heading towards a library on Commercial Street in Malton.
She was then captured on CCTV at the petrol garage in Welham Road – around half a mile away – wearing jeans and a puffa jacket.
Victoria was seen on camera as she passed Malton bus station and a children’s play park at 11.53am.
Her last sighting was at 12.30pm as she walked towards the play park before heading to a path along the water.
Police previously confirmed they were keeping an open mind but there was nothing to suggest any third party involvement.
They concentrated their search on the river after confirming a “number of personal possessions” belonging to Victoria had been found near the water.
Head of Local Policing, Chief Superintendent Fiona Willey, said the force had to accept the “significant possibility” the mum had entered the river.
Drones were used to search the area from above, while a specialist underwater unit was also drafted in to help with the hunt.
Officers also used sophisticated sonar technology to scan the river bed as the search ramped up.
A Facebook group was also set up to help find Victoria as locals put up missing posters around the area.
Her fiancé Matthew Williams updated his Facebook profile picture to a touching black and white snap of the pair.
He later issued a heartbreaking plea, saying: “I hope she comes back safely”.
The couple had recently returned home after enjoying their first holiday together in Majorca.
Matthew also wept as he told how he and the pair’s one-year-old daughter were living “in hope”.
He added: “I am just heartbroken for this one. I know Vikki wanted this one to have the best opportunities in life – the opportunities she never had.
“It breaks my heart.”
While her sisters Emma and Heidi said: “We currently feel sick, distraught and lost following the disappearance of Vixx, but we are trying to focus on the children in the family to maintain a sense of routine at this difficult time.
“We would like to thank all the emergency services and volunteers who have assisted in the search for Vixx so far. The wider local community has also rallied around, and we are eternally grateful for the support that they have given to us, Vixx’s family.
“The police have told us that searches will continue over the weekend for which we are grateful.
“The water is challenging at the moment due to the recent weather so if people are out searching for Vixx, then please do not put yourself at risk.”
Victoria was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black Adidas original puffa jacket with white stripes down the sleeves and a grey Jack Wills hooded jumper.
She had shared a touching image with her daughter on Facebook just days before she vanished.
North Yorkshire Police previously said members of the public should expect to see an increased police presence in Malton.
