From filtered milk to chewy tablets – three products to boost your calcium intake

TODAY is World Osteoporosis Day.

The disease causes bones to become weak and more prone to breaking, and is more likely to occur in people who have low calcium intake.

We tested three products to boost your calcium intake

Symptoms of low calcium include dry, scaly skin, brittle nails, coarse hair and cramping.

Calcium comes from dairy, nuts, leafy greens and fish, so here are some other ways to give your intake a boost.

FILTERED MILK

a carton of super nutrio high protein semi-skimmed cow 's milk
SuperNutrio
SuperNutrio gives you almost twice as much calcium as normal milk[/caption]

SUPERNUTRIO is a very clever new milk variety made by passing two litres of cow’s milk through smart filters to concentrate the protein and calcium into one litre.

In regular semi-skimmed you get around 124mg of calcium per 100ml, 47kcal and 3.6 per cent protein.

In SuperNutrio it is 220mg of calcium, 64kcal and seven per cent protein.

It tastes richer and creamier to normal semi-skimmed milk, but that is it.

It comes in whole, semi-skimmed and skimmed variants and is £2.49 RRP for a one litre carton.

See supernutrio.co.uk

CHEWY TABLETS

two boxes of healthspan calcium and vitamin d chewable tablets
Supplied
Healthspan Calcium & Vitamin D tablets contain half of your recommended daily amount of calcium[/caption]

HEALTHSPAN Calcium & Vitamin D are lovely chewable vanilla flavoured tablets that pack in a lot.

They contain 400mg calcium per tablet, which is half of your recommended daily amount, all of your recommended Vitamin D3 and 40 per cent of vitamin K1, which both also help to maintain bone health.

To fully absorb and utilise calcium, we need Vitamin D. Vitamin D is found in small amounts in food, but the majority (90 per cent) is made by the body on exposure to sunlight.

Public Health England recommends everyone takes vitamin D supplements during autumn and winter.

This supplement is for everyone, but ideal for women over 50. You take three tablets a day.

240 tablets cost £13.49, healthspan.co.uk

MINERAL POWDER

a bottle of viridian calcium magnesium and zinc powder
Viridian
You only need one teaspoon of Viridian Calcium Magnesium Zinc Powder[/caption]

ALL you need is one teaspoon of Viridian Calcium Magnesium Zinc Powder to get these three great minerals, which all contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.

There is 400mg of calcium, which is 50 per cent of your NRV, 300mg magnesium (80 per cent of your NRV) and 500mg of vitamin C – a huge six times the recommended amount, although you can take more than this.

It also contains malic acid from fruit and vegetables for optimum absorption.

All you do is mix it with water or juice and the powder is easily absorbed – no need to break down pills or capsules.

A great idea, you can easily adjust the serving size as needed and there are no binders or fillers.

I tested three face oils at all price points – budget option has sophisticated formula

I HAVE greasy, spot-prone skin, so the last thing you’d expect me to use in my routine is a face oil.

But there’s a special type created especially for people like me, and it is perfect for keeping dry winter skin at bay.

a bottle of kiehl 's midnight recovery concentrate next to a bottle of summer fridays and a bottle of byoma
We put three non-comedogenic oils to the test

This week, I put three non-comedogenic oil to the test..

Byoma is one of the best affordable skincare brands in the game right now[/caption]

Byoma Hydrating Recovery Oil, £14 for 30ml, spacenk.com: Without a doubt, Byoma is one of the best affordable skincare brands in the game right now.

Their formulas are sophisticated, the packaging clever, and they take their role of educating consumers seriously – so when they say this oil is suitable for those with acne, I trust them.

The texture was thicker than I expected, so two drops were more than enough for my whole face.

It’s definitely hydrating, but I felt like it sat on my skin all day, and no matter how long I applied before bed, it ends up sinking into my pillow, so I don’t reach for it often.

It’s probably better suited to those with very dry skin.

Mid-range

This face oil’s texture was almost like water[/caption]

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, £20 for 15ml, Boots: I can’t count on both hands the number of friends that use this religiously, it’s one of the products I’m asked about (and for!) most – and with good reason.

In contrast to the Byoma oil, the texture was almost like water – which takes some getting used to and careful application.

It also sinks in very quickly – so if you have dry skin, you will want to use a rich moisturiser underneath, but for those like me with oily skin it will be enough as is.

I noticed my skin was far less red after just a week’s use.

There’s only one thing I don’t like, and that’s the smell!

Luxury

Summer Fridays Heavenly Sixteen All-In-One Face Oil is a great all-rounder, and my current favourite[/caption]

Summer Fridays Heavenly Sixteen All-In-One Face Oil, £55 for 30ml, spacenk.com: When I was trying these oils, I had sympathy for Goldilocks.

Too oily, not oily enough – and this one, just like Baby Bear’s porridge, is just right.

It doesn’t sink in very quickly, but also doesn’t feel heavy or cloying on my skin, which is great for long-lasting hydration.

The scent is minimal, so it doesn’t irritate my skin or sting my eyes, and the impressive mix of 16 oils – none of which block pores – means it targets pretty much every skin problem you can think of.

It’s a great all-rounder, and my current favourite.

Make-up Cooling Water Jelly Tints, £22, sephora.co.uk: I’ve got great news for anyone who found themselves obsessed with Milk Make-up Cooling Water Jelly Tints over the summer.

The brand has just launched two new shades, and they are much more subtle than the original offering – Fresh, a baby pink shade, and Fizz, a sheer peach hue.

The new shades are more wearable, so get in quick!

How can I get help if NHS mental health services have such long waiting lists? – Dr Zoe answers your health queries

THE NHS is “in bad shape for winter”, experts warn as figures show A&E departments are busier than ever.

The Royal College of Nursing said the health service is “hurtling towards another winter crisis”.

Dr Zoe gives advice to a reader who is concerned about NHS waiting lists[/caption]

Hospitals and ambulance services are plunged into difficulty every year and this season is set to bring more of the same.

Medical director of NHS England, Professor Sir Stephen Powis, admitted it will be “incredibly busy”.

Last year, three in 10 casualty visitors waited more than four hours to be seen and a near-record 54,000 languished for 12 hours or more in January.

NHS statistics showed today that 2.21million people went to A&E last month, the highest ever for September.

Q: HOW can we get help with trauma regarding sexual abuse when NHS mental health services have such long waiting lists?

A: While long wait times can be discouraging, remember you are not alone and there is still support available.

Many charities and support organisations, such as Rape Crisis or SurvivorsUK, offer free, confidential support, including counselling.

Some local groups also provide trauma-specific therapy or peer support.

Additionally, online platforms such as Mind and Samaritans can offer immediate emotional support.

Even while waiting for NHS services, you can reach out – there are caring professionals who can guide you through this.

Your healing matters and support is out there.

Health tip

More research has shown that women would prefer to have DIY cervical screening, carried out at home.

Queen Mary University of London found that 85 per cent of females would like the option to choose, and 69 per cent would pick self-sampling.

This could potentially boost the uptake of cervical screening.

However, it won’t be offered for a long time yet, so my tip is to book your cervical screening when invited.

Unfortunately, one in three women are not up to date with their test.

I get it, women are busy, and it’s a pain to go to the GP surgery.

But it could prevent you from getting cervical cancer.

Remember, screening detects abnormal cells before they even turn into cancer – so don’t miss it.

You're Not Alone

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:

‘They want her gone so bad’ rage Strictly fans after star is given ‘death slot’ by bosses

STRICTLY fans have raged bosses want one star ‘gone so bad’ after being given the ‘death slot’.

The BBC show returned for its fifth live show tonight with Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman both looking incredible at the opening of the show.

But fans think she was given the ‘death slot’ by bosses

After introducing the judges and the remaining celebrities, JB Gill and Amy Dowden danced first with a Jive.

Next up was Punam Krishan and Gorka Marquez with a Viennese Waltz.

But Strictly fans felt her placement in the show was a sign bosses wanted her out.

Taking to X – formerly Twitter – one wrote: “punam in the death slot again? oh they want her gone so bad #Strictly.”

Another tweeted: “I just said the exact same thing, that’s Punam gone this week because they’ve deliberately put her in the death slot.”

A third raged: “Punam in the death slot… they want her gone #Strictly.”

After she had finished her routine, Punam received a score of 21 from the judges, after Craig Revel Horwood told her it had “lacked musicality and energy in the body.”

But viewers were not impressed, with one writing on X: “consistently undermarking the women as well as putting them in the death slot is not a good look.”

Another added: “Those scores for Punam were ridiculous, what a way to build someone’s confidence.”

The scores come after Punam found herself at the bottom of the leaderboard last week.

The Morning Live star was saved by the public and managed to avoid the dance off.

Instead, it was between Shayne Ward and his partner Nancy Wu and Nick Knowles and his partner Luba Mushtuk.

The judges opted to send DIY SOS star Nick home and allow Shayne to dance another week.

Strictly Specials

  • Movies Week – Each year the cast of dancers on the show perform spellbinding routines to an iconic movie soundtrack or hit song associated with the big-screen blockbusters. Previous films to have been featured include The Sound of Music, Bridget Jones’ Diary and Clueless.
  • Musicals Week – In a similar vein to Movies, the cast perform routines inspired by hit stage musicals each year on the show.
  • Halloween Week – Things take a seriously spooky turn as the show transforms into a haven for Halloween towards the end of October. With some bone-chilling costumes and sometimes terrifying routines, it proves to be a fan favourite week year-on-year.
  • Blackpool Week – As the show hits Blackpool Tower, things get even more over-the-top. Huge props, backing dancers and extra special effects flood the ballroom for the extra special week.

Strictly airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.

‘Pack this in!’ Strictly fans ‘still fuming’ over major show change as they beg bosses to bring it back

STRICTLY Come Dancing fans are ‘still fuming’ over a major show change.

Just seconds into tonight’s edition of the long-running BBC programme, fans begged bosses to bring their favourite segment back.

Strictly Come Dancing fans fumed at the format change[/caption]

Tess and Claudia were simply stood on the band’s podium instead of walking in[/caption]

Previously on Strictly Come Dancing, a booming voiceover would welcome viewers to the show after the title sequence on BBC One.

Then both of the presenters would walk down the studio staircase as they made their entrance to the glitzy ballroom.

For the anticipated 2024 series of the celebrity dancing competition, bosses seemed to make a huge change.

Long-time fans noticed that Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman no longer make a grand entrance.

Instead they are just stood in position on the band’s podium as they provide a more simple introduction.

This is despite the fact that both the judges get to perform a routine and the contestant pairings make their way in one-by-one.

Many enthusiasts took to social to complain about the format change as they begged bosses to bring the grand entrance back.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one angry fan exclaimed: “BRING BACK THE TESS & CLAUDIA WALK IN INTRO!”

A second echoed: “Pack this in! Bring back Tess and Claudia’s walk on!”

“It’s really jarring Strictly starting and Tess & Claudia just standing there – why do they not get their intro any more?,” wrote a third user.

While a fourth stated: “It threw me off that Tess and Claudia were already standing on the stage and weren’t announced/did their little beginning skit. WHY? WHYYYYY?”

“I HATE the way they don’t introduce Tess and Claudia anymore with the “Live from the BBC” and Dave Arch wagging his finger… really takes away from the atmosphere,” noted a fifth viewer.

And a sixth added: “The format changes with Claudia and Tess just standing there after the credits and the judges and contestants coming out to random songs instead of the theme were jarring at first and remain awful. Change it back immediately!”

Anmaat stuns hot favourite Calandagan with 40-1 win on memorable Champions Day at Ascot

JIM CROWLEY loved it… and so did the bookies.

The former champion jockey let out a roar of delight as Anmaat caused a huge 40-1 upset in the Champion Stakes.

Anmaat (blue silks) downed the favourite Calandagan (left) in the Champion Stakes[/caption]

It was a result few saw coming, but confident Crowley grinned: “This was no fluke.”

Given the way the horse exploded impressively through a narrow gap on testing ground to mow down Calandagan, one of the top three-year-old’s in Europe, it’s hard to argue.

But it was also about as messy a Group 1 race as has been run in the UK all season.

The field bunched up on the turn for home and the bumping and barging that followed in the straight was more like something you’d see at Twickenham, not Ascot.

It was an especially rough race for French star Calandagan, who lost ground at the start and, from his inside draw in stall one, was boxed in with nowhere to go for the majority of the race.

He finally managed to thread the eye of a needle with just over a furlong to run, but Crowley and the Owen Burrows-trained Anmaat were right on his tail and came over the top late to leave the 29,012 crowd in stunned silence.

Crowley said: “I was going well in the straight, but then we had to try and work our way through and we got completely stopped.

“There was no option at the time, we were just stuck. I won’t tell you what I was thinking. But when he got the gap, it was extraordinary the way the horse picked up and, believe me, it was no fluke.

“This year has been a bit slow. I am used to having these big winners all the time and this is my first Group 1 this year so I’m going to enjoy it.”

It was an especially big result for the jockey given he was turned over on superstar Baaeed in the same race two years ago.

He added: “It was a tough one to take when Baaeed got beat here a couple of years ago, but it just makes this result even sweeter.”

Economics ran the worst race of his young career back in sixth, and as he pulled up passing the line there was blood clearly visible around his nostrils.

When a horse ‘bleeds’ it’s usually as a result of burst blood vessels in the lungs as a horse exerts itself.

It’s not a serious condition but can often be a recurring issue and will have a severe impact on their performance.

It’s the second time the three-year-old has bled during a race, though William Haggas claimed the bleed after his victory in the Dante at York in May was because he banged his head on the starting stalls.

There were no such excuses this time and it clearly looks like being a major concern for the horse going into next season.

Charyn, meanwhile, has been an absolute model of consistency all year long and he capped an epic campaign with victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

His jockey Silvestre De Sousa rode him with supreme confidence, and he was still sat motionless as Facteur Cheval ranged up alongside with a potent looking challenge.

a horse with the number 13 on it
PA
Charyn (left) won his third Group 1 of the year in the QEII[/caption]

But the undisputed champion miler Charyn went clear when asked to quicken up and he was well on top at the line for a chuffed Roger Varian.

It has been a tough year for the Newmarket trainer, who has lost the support of powerful owners Amo Racing and Sheikh Obaid, but this horse has more than kept him going.

Varian said: “He is a super horse and that was fantastic. Everything went very smoothly, and it was a lovely race to watch.

“Silvestre got me a bit nervous! He just sat there very comfortably and you could see the second horse coming, and then Charyn had to get to work and showed his battling qualities.

“We’ll have to see how he comes out of this race, we might just contemplate one more international run in America or Japan.”

Kind Of Blue bagged the Champions Sprint for nice guy James Fanshawe, who has now won the race three times with horses from the same family.

Kalpana was in a league of her own for trainer Andrew Balding as she swept to an impressive victory in the Fillies’ and Mares’ Stakes.

And king of the stayers Kyprios completed a clean sweep for the season when winning the Long Distance Cup in style.

Aidan O’Brien’s star has won each of his seven starts in 2024 and is head and shoulders the best stayer in the world right now.

O’Brien said: “He is a very special horse. Ryan (Moore) was in total control on him after the first furlong, it was a joy to watch.

“He is relentless and has an unbelievable amount of quality, so it doesn’t matter if you go slow or if you go fast, he just goes there and gets the job done.”

Carragher deletes tweet about Howard Webb after ref chief is spotted on phone during Arsenal star Saliba’s red card VAR

JAMIE CARRAGHER quickly deleted a tweet about Howard Webb after William Saliba was shown a red card in Arsenal’s game against Bournemouth.

The incident happened in the first half when a misplaced pass by Leandro Trossard put William Saliba in trouble.

Saliba receives his marching orders for the controversial decision
a tweet from jamie garragher asking if howard webbo was involved in the decision making of the red card for saliba

The ball ran through to Evanilson, near the halfway line, who was ready to race on to it.

But, the French defender was seen pulling the arm of the Brazilian who took a tumble.

Initially, referee Rob Jones gave a yellow card to Saliba, before a VAR check invited the official to look at the incident on a screen.

As the VAR check was ongoing, cameras zoomed in on Webb who was watching the game from the stands.

The ex-ref was seen on his phone as the VAR Jared Gillett analysed the incident.

Following a review, Saliba’s card was changed from a yellow to a red by Jones.

The moment prompted Sky Sports pundit to take to X to reveal his thoughts.

Carragher wrote: “Was Howard Webb involved in the decision making of the red card of Saliba??”

However, the football expert soon retracted his comment by deleting his tweet.

It means Saliba will be banned for only ONE game.

That’s because it was not for violent conduct, which means a three-match suspension.

Some fans suggested Evanilson had been offside.

But one posted: “No, the referee made the correct call after the VAR review to send off Saliba after taking down Evanilson, last man and had a clear run towards goal.

“For anyone questioning an ‘offside’, Trossard played the ball in this scenario.”

Ruth Langsford puts on a brave face as she supports former This Morning co-star Vanessa Feltz

RUTH Langsford put on a brave face as she supported her former This Morning co-star Vanessa Feltz.

Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford previously announced their separation after 14 years of marriage in June 2024.

We reported that she found messages between him and another woman on a laptop computer.

He was since spotted on a Mediterranean cruise holiday with his new partner, relationship counsellor Katie Alexander, 42.

Now the star seems to be putting the drama of her split behind her as she reunited with several of her former This Morning co-stars.

She took to her social media this week as she attended the launch party of the forthcoming memoir, Vanessa Bares All in London’s White City House.

Ruth was dressed in slimming black leggings and a top combination which was covered by a chic grey blazer.

Vanessa, 62, sparkled in a puffy baby pink corseted ballgown as she spent time with her former co-star.

Posting a pic of the duo on her Instagram story, Ruth captioned the snap: “Lovely evening celebrating the launch of my lovely friend’s book.”

Later they were joined by Lizzie Cundy, 56, who stunned in a black lace top and a skimpy black leather skirt.

Ruth beamed from ear to ear in a third snap as The Loose Women anchor posed with her fellow TV pals.

This morning presenters Sharon Marshall and chef Juliet Sear also attended the star-studded bash as they joined Ruth in the happy selfie.

Ruth made it clear that she was utterly delighted to be back in the company of her former co-stars.

She captioned the snap: “Great catching up with friends.”

Ruth and Eamonn were previously given the axe from their Friday slot on the flagship ITV daytime show back in November 2020.

It was later revealed they were being replaced by Alison Hammond and former X Factor host, Dermot O’Leary.
