Bubble wrapping windows and a bag of rice helped me save £3,000 on my energy bills – anyone can do my DIY tricks

CHATTING to a neighbourhood friend, Chloe Godland, 30, starts her pre-winter preparation.

She grabs some lengths of bubble wrap and a water bottle and starts working around the windows of her three-bed home.

Chloe Godland has saved almost £3,000 with her tricks

“Have you lost the plot?” her friend asks – but it’s a comment Chloe isn’t bothered by.

Her wacky use of bubble wrap is actually a bill busting method to keep her house warm this winter.

“I’m super scrimper – I save around £3k in winter with all my tricks, which cost almost nothing,” she told The Sun.

BUBBLE WRAPPING WINDOWS

Chloe estimates that “bubble wrapping” her windows has saved her around £900 on her bills over the past three years.

“Bubble wrap is a cheap option for double glazing,” she explained.

“The bubble side stays on the window sealed with just water and captures heat from the sun, and at night time, it stops heat getting out.

“It’s upping the temperature of the room by two degrees and we don’t have to turn the heating on as much.”

Former receptionist Chloe, who lives in Leicester with her fiance, gym instructor Jack Gordon, 34, and their two and half year-old daughter Clemmie, isn’t alone with this trick.

Experts say bubble wrapping your windows is a proven winter heat saver.

The howtogosolart.org website reveals bubble wrap on windows can cut your energy bills in that area of the house by 50%.

This is money Chloe’s family really needs to save.

Jack earns just over £29,000 a year and the family pays £800 a month to rent a three bedroom.

“Once our bills are paid, we are left with £50 a month in the emergency fund,” Chloe said.

RICE AND SOCK TRICK

Chloe’s second winter hack involves a bag of own-brand rice, costing around 50p.

“I don’t cook rice – I collect all the long odd socks I can find and fill them with rice. They make great draught excluders along doors and windows.”

The Energy Saving Trust says draught-proofing around windows and doors could save you between  £40 to £50 a year.

This isn’t the only way she used the rice.

“On cold nights I pop a rice-filled sock into the microwave with a little lavender or nice smelling essential oil for one and a half minutes.

“I put one into Clemmie’s bed so it’s warm when she gets in.  Jack and I use them as lap warmers while watching TV. Bargain rice retains the heat.”

CHEAP DOOR CURTAINS

Chloe’s third winter warmer tip is using cheap curtains to hang over doors, creating a second layer.

“I buy the thick-double layered old-fashioned curtains in the home furnishings section for between five and ten quid,” she said.

“Doorways are some of the worst places for heat to escape, so adding an extra layer of insulation helps the heat stays in.”

According to University of Salford researchers drawing your curtains at dusk can reduce heat loss by around 15-17%.

“I have saved more than £630 on heating bills in three years doing this,” Chloe said.

BLANKETS ON WALLS

Chloe also hangs blankets around the walls in rooms she is in as an extra layer of insulation.

“The heat is trapped in the room and doesn’t get lost through the wall,” she said.

“I did it during the big freeze last December. The room temperature went up two degrees using my blanket hanging tip.”

The energysavingtrust.org.uk says 35% or more that a third of heat is lost through walls, so this trick could be a big energy saver.

LEAVING OVEN OPEN

Finally, Chloe always leaves her oven door “Whenever I use the oven in winter, I leave the door open when I turn it off,” Chloe said.

As a result, all the hot air flows out into the kitchen and other rooms – raising the overall temperature.

“It is heat that would have stayed in the oven and been lost.”

4 ways to keep your energy bills low

Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips.

1. Turn your heating down by one degree

You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.

2. Switch appliances and lights off

It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills

3. Install a smart meter

Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.

4. Consider switching energy supplier

No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.

Sir Alex Ferguson to MISS Brentford clash just four days after axe as Man Utd ambassador

SIR ALEX FERGUSON is set to miss Manchester United’s clash with Brentford today – just four days after being axed as a club ambassador.

Earlier this week, Sir Alex was relieved of his duties as a club ambassador at Man Utd – losing his £2.16m-per-year paycheque in the process.

Sir Alex Ferguson won’t be attending Manchester United’s clash with Brentford today[/caption]

The axing, which came as part of Ineos’ continued cost-cutting measures, is said to have been accepted amicably at during a meeting.

While Ferguson is understood to be maintaining his position as a non-executive member of the board at the club he managed for 26 years.

The 82-year old is also said to be welcome at any Man Utd games going forward, as he has been since his departure as manager in 2013.

But that won’t be happening today with the Scot set to skip out on attending Old Trafford to watch Erik ten Hag‘s side take on Brentford in the Premier League.

Ferguson will not be at the Prem clash against the Bees as it is claimed the newly axed former gaffer is at a prior engagement.

Current boss Ten Hag has already spoken on the “impact” Sir Alex stepping down from his role will have on Man Utd as a club going forward.

In his pre-match press conference, he said: “Of course, it has an impact on us.

“Sir Alex is Manchester United, he built Manchester United to where the club is now, it impacts us.”

Adding: “Sir Alex wants to see a winning Manchester United.

“I’m sure he’s always available for every advice, we will need him as we did in the last two and a half years.”

Ferguson’s £2.16m-per-year contract was seeing him earn more than what FIVE United first team players currently pocket – including England international Kobbie Mainoo.

However, many fans and pundits think that Ferguson’s ambassadorial salary was justifiable given his impact on the club during his 26-year stint in the dugout.

And former Man Utd star Rio Ferdinand – who won six Premier League titles under Ferguson – has suggested that his former gaffer’s status could be one of the motivating factors behind taking him off the payroll.

Hinting that the decision to “axe” a name like Fergie could send a message to everyone at Man Utd that nobody is safe under the new regime.

Taking to social media, Ferdinand wrote: “If Sir Alex can be taken out, then NO ONE IS SAFE at Man Utd – anyone can get it now.

“Ineos sending a message to ANYONE at the club?!?”

Doctors told me my wife had 6 months to live three days after our wedding & I kept it SECRET – we even went on honeymoon

SITTING in a private room just three days after marrying his childhood sweetheart, Taylor Odlozil wanted answers to a heartbreaking question.

“She’s going to die, isn’t she?” he asked, bracing himself for the reply which he knew could change his life with Haley in an instant.

I haven’t seen Haley with long hair since the day I had to shave it off (7 years ago). I feel like I’m married to a new woman. She’s absolutely beautiful! - 30 November 2022 : https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmnMReOPb1/?hl=en
After a long battle with ovarian cancer Haley passed away in July last year
    Instagram/taylorodlozi

His new wife was battling ovarian cancer and the doctor had devastating news: “She’s got six months,” she replied, and Taylor, 31, broke down.

But in an endearing act of love, Taylor made the decision to keep the bleak prognosis from his new wife so she could enjoy their honeymoon.

He says: “I just lost it. The doctor was comforting me and I couldn’t bring myself to tell her that.

“I had to gather myself, go out into the waiting room, look at Haley in the face, knowing that she’s dying.”

In December 2015, Haley was 22 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer, just two months before their wedding.

She’d found a lump in her stomach which doctors had initially thought was a cyst.

With gruelling treatment looming and the day of the wedding getting closer, Haley made a selfless suggestion.

Taylor recalls: “She looked at me and said, ‘I need to tell you something, if you want to call off the wedding and you can marry someone else, that’s okay with me. There’s no telling what my future holds, but it’s full of doctor’s appointments, and heartache and sadness.

If you would like to move on, that’s ok with me.’

“It just broke my heart, I said ‘are you kidding?’ I’m not going anywhere, we’re riding this to the end together'”, he says, on the MD podcast.

Haley started chemo and after losing all of her hair, she had to use glue to attach a wig on her wedding day.

But the treatment didn’t work and that was when Taylor asked to see the doctor alone.

Reeling from the news, Taylor went to see his dad for support.

“I was banging on the door and my dad open’s it and I literally collapsed in his arms, screaming, sobbing,” he recalls.

TAYLOR ODLOZIL : 2 years ago today Haley and I’s life changed forever. One minute we were opening wedding gifts and planning our future with our kids and the next we were getting chemo treatments and planning things Haley wanted to see and do before the cancer took her from us. In a matter of 10 seconds I found out I would not be able to have a child the way God intended with the woman I love and on top of that she was dying. Cancer ruins so many people’s lives. She is in clinical remission now but it is still a daily fight and struggle. I will never be the same again. Haley has daily pain that limits her from doing things she wants to do. Thank you to everyone who prayed and continue to pray for us. To people my age starting their own families always keep in mind the things that you think are problems in your life are really not that bad at the end of the day. Say an extra prayer of thanks from time to time. It’s a knife to the heart every time I see someone I know or grew up with announcing they are expecting a child. Haley you are such a badass and I love you more than you will ever know! #cancersucks #teamhaley #g - 15 DECEMBER 2017 - https://www.instagram.com/p/BcvKD67guGd/?hl=en&img_index=1
Haley battled cancer for many years
    Instagram/taylorodlozi

“My dad started crying – you know we don’t see our dads crying often – but we were just laying in the doorway sobbing. I realised she’s dying, this is really going to happen.”

Taylor stuck to his plan and kept the news hidden until after their trip.

When they returned, Haley had surgery to remove her ovaries which put her into menopause at 23 – robbing her of the chance to have children.

“She was in mourning, she was born to be a mum,” Taylor adds.

    A selfless sacrifice

In 2019, a friend offered to be a surrogate for the couple, although they knew Haley’s time as a mum might only be brief.

Taylor adds: “I knew Haley wanted to be a mum, but I also had reservations and knew that I was probably going to be a single dad at some point.

“She always wanted a girl, I always wanted a boy.”

The healthiest embryo was in fact female but knowing how much Taylor wanted a son, Haley made a sacrifice.

“She looked at me and said ‘I can’t give you children but I can give you a boy’,” Taylor explains in the Unplanned podcast.

Their son Weston was born in 2019, but just a few months after his birth, Haley’s health began to deteriorate.

a few hours later, I realised I needed to explain to my son for the last time, ‘mummy is going to heaven, this is it.

    Taylor Odlozil

She continued her fight for the next few years until July 2023 when she passed away, aged 30.

Taylor recalls what life was like for the family during the mum’s final hours.

“Everybody was looking at her, she’s surrounded by everybody. She’s like ‘this is it isn’t it? This is the end?’,” he explains.

“And then a few hours later, I realised I needed to explain to my son for the last time, ‘mummy is going to heaven, this is it’.

“He said ‘yes I know’. We were both holding Haley’s hand and she was asleep.”

Poignantly, sensing her husband and four-year-old son were by her side, it was Haley who had the last words.

“She came to and out of nowhere looked at Weston,” says Taylor.

“He said ‘I love you mommy’ and she said ‘I love you too Weston’ and that’s the last thing she said.”

Do you have ‘pink mould’ in your bathroom? Cleaning whizz issues important health warning & the 65p tip to get rid of it

A CLEANING whizz has issued an urgent warning about the pink mould in your bathroom – claiming it’s not actually mould.

Showers and bathtubs – one of the hardest places to keep clean, especially given how damp they get on a daily basis.

a woman is cleaning a shower door with a green cloth under a sign that says facts this pink mould
    Instagram / @kacie_thebigcleanco
According to one whizz, the pink stains have got nothing to do with mould[/caption]

Luckily, there’s a purse-friendly way to remove the grim stains
    Instagram / @kacie_thebigcleanco

However, no matter how on-top you may be when it comes to keeping the bathroom spotless, a professional cleaning has urged to look out for one thing in particular.

Cleanfluencer Kacie Stephens posted a video on Instagram where she explained that there’s a nasty type of mould that can easily lead infections – and it’s easy to spot because it’s pink.

The reason why it’s so dangerous is that it’s not actually mould, despite what so many of us may assume.

Kacie, from Melbourne, Australia, explained in the caption: “Pink mould is not actually mould at all, it’s bacteria.

”The build-up of it on your shower can cause infections, so make sure you’re washing it away regularly.”

In the clip, the Aussie was seen scrubbing away at pink slime in the shower.

“FACTS,” she said, adding: “This pink mould? It’s not mould at all. It’s a bacteria called Serratia Marcescens.”

According to a 2013 paper published in the National Library of Medicine, Serratia Marcescens is an ‘’opportunistic, gram-negative, nosocomial pathogen’’ which belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae.

It was first discovered by Italian pharmacist Bartolomeo Bizio in 1819, when he identified it as a ‘’cause of the bloody discolouration on cornmeal mush’’.

Many social media users were stunned to find out what the pink matter really was, having assumed the discolouration was down to something else.

“I always thought it was soap scum,” one person said.

Another added: “I always thought it must be maybe makeup build-up!!!!”

Someone else remarked: “Eww is this the pinky-red s**t that builds up around sink drains?”

A fourth user wrote: “Thank you for sharing this information! I noticed this pink liquid in my dehumidifier which totally puzzled me because it didn’t come from a water source.

”It was in the air. Regardless, I wasn’t comfortable with that and tried to rinse my dehumidifier frequently after emptying.”

Sharing how to deal with it, another user advised: “Serratia is an incredibly resilient bacteria and can grow in most any moist environment.

”Eradicating it totally is hard, but a 10 per cent bleach solution and keeping your shower as dry as possible between use helps.”

To make a 10 per cent bleach solution, you can mix one part bleach with nine parts water. For example, you can mix 1/4 cup of bleach with two 1/4 cups of water.

Cleaning fans can snap up bleach from most supermarkets, including Aldi where it sells for just 65p.

Common Bathroom Habits That Increase Mould

Plumbworld, a leading expert in bathroom and kitchen products, has shared the daily habits that increase the chance of mould growing in homes.

Leaving wet towels and bathmats on floor

Wet towels and bathmats on the floors after a shower or bath can increase humidity levels which provides a perfect breeding ground for mould spores.

To prevent this, hang towels and bathmats in an area where they can dry quickly and to wash them regularly.

    Not turning on the fan

An exhaust fan is critical in reducing moisture levels in the bathroom.

When taking a hot shower or bath, steam increases the room’s humidity level, creating an ideal setting for mould to flourish on walls, ceilings, and other surfaces.

An exhaust fan helps by moving the moist air outside, significantly reducing the risk of mould growth.

Experts suggest running the fan during the shower and for at least 20-30 minutes afterwards to lower humidity levels.

    Ignoring small leaks

Even minor leaks from the sink, toilet, or shower can contribute to increased moisture levels in a bathroom, fostering an environment where mould can thrive.

Over time, these leaks can cause significant water damage, promoting mould growth in less visible areas such as inside walls or under flooring.

Fix leaks promptly to prevent mould and potential structural damage.

Keeping shower curtains or doors closed

Keeping the shower area closed after use traps moisture inside, delaying the drying process and creating a humid environment conducive to mould growth.

Mould can easily develop on shower curtains, doors, and in tile grout if they remain wet for too long.

To avoid this, leave the shower door or curtain open after use to improve air circulation and allow the area to dry more quickly.

    Storing too many products

Shower caddies and corners filled with bottles and accessories may seem harmless, but they can obstruct airflow and trap moisture and creates hidden, moist niches where mould can grow unnoticed.

Keep shampoo and shower gel bottles to a minimum, and regularly clean and dry the areas underneath them to prevent mould growing.

Brit tourist drowns after falling on rocks and being dragged out to sea by wave on Menorca coastline stroll

A BRITISH holidaymaker has drowned after being swept into the sea by a wave during a coastline stroll in Menorca.

The 72-year-old was knocked off his feet on rocks near a landmark sea arch on the north side of Ciutadella bay called Pont d’en Gil.

The tragedy happened at around 1pm on Friday[/caption]

Residents in a nearby apartment block called 999 after seeing him in difficulties in the water.

The sea currents took him further away from the coastline and he was already dead by the time firefighters in a dinghy reached him.

His body was taken to Ciutadella Port where he was formally pronounced dead.

The tragedy happened around 1pm on Friday.

An autopsy due to take place later today is expected to confirm the unnamed tourist died from drowning and not a blow to the head as he fell.

A strong easterly wind was blowing when the man went into the water.

He was thought to have been staying in a four-star hotel, just a five-minute drive away in Cala d’en Blanes.

Cops have launched a routine investigation co-ordinated by a local court but have not yet made any official comment.

Local police, coastguards, paramedics and Civil Guard officers were called to the scene as part of the emergency response.

Pont d’en Gil is a spectacular arch shaped by the strength of the waves which has been crafted into a natural suspension bridge.

Medium and small sized boats can pass through it.

Next to Pont d’en Gil there is an underwater cave well known by divers on the island, called Sa Cigonya.

It comes after an injured Brit woman was rescued after she was hacked by a boat propeller while diving off a Thai island.

Aimee Louise Bacchetta, 30, was paddling off the idyllic Similan Islands in Phang Nga province when she injured her leg on a whirring boat propeller.

The holidaymaker suffered a deep wound near her right Achilles tendon.

Crew from the speedboat Saracha called the Royal Thai Navy.

Medics were rushed to the scene, where they stopped the bleeding and transported Bacchetta to hospital after carrying her to shore.

She has since been released from hospital and is recovering from the ordeal.

Meanwhile, a 66-year-old Brit holidaymaker was tragically killed in a horror crash on his first day in Thailand.

He had recently arrived in the Southeast Asian country to visit his long distance Thai partner and friends in Chonburi province.

He went on a motorcycle ride with some pals to celebrate his arrival, but crashed into a traffic sign while turning at a U-turn slot near a bridge on the night of October 5.

The impact was said to have flung the Brit from his seat and shattered his two-wheeler.

Storm Ashley ‘intensifying rapidly’ as it barrels towards UK bringing 80mph winds, huge waves & floods, warns Met Office

BRITS have been warned to brace for 80mph gales, heavy rain and travel chaos as Storm Ashley is set to batter the UK this weekend.

The Met Office has warned of “very strong and gusty southerly winds” as the rapidly “intensifying” weather pattern hits tomorrow.

Those affected have been warned ‘injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves’ at the coast[/caption]
a met office map showing wind gusts of 50 - 60 mph
Met Office maps reveal the worst affected areas expected

It comes as a deep area of low pressure will arrive from the Atlantic bringing Storm Ashley with widespread strong winds, particularly in northern and western areas.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said in a forecast: “There’s quite a powerful storm developing mostly to the west of the UK.

“The central pressure has dropped down by Saturday morning in the space of a day, intensifying as the storm system approaches.

“It will bring some potentially damaging gusts of wind across the Republic of Ireland but also across some parts of the UK.

“It’s on Sunday we are particularly concerned about. Saturday will be a nice day, dry and bright.

“But on Sunday, parts of north west England, north Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland could see some damaging gusts of wind.

“We can see gusts close to 90mph offshore, but across parts of Scotland we could see gusts of 60, 70, perhaps 80mph on Sunday afternoon into the evening.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind on Sunday, covering parts of Scotland and the Scottish Highlands.

It comes into force at 9am and finishes at midnight the same day.

Meteorologists predicts gusts could reach up to 80mph in exposed areas.

Those affected can expect power cuts, and disrupted mobile phone coverage.

Public transport services will also likely ben delayed or cancelled, with roads and bridges predicted to close.

The Met Office warning reads: “Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.

“Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.”

There is also a yellow weather warning for wind covering larger areas of the UK, including all of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the western coast line stretching down past the midlands to Wales.

This notice last from 3am on Sunday until midnight.

Areas affected by the amber warning

    Highlands & Eilean Siar:

    • Na h-Eileanan Siar
    • Highland

    Strathclyde:

    • Argyll and Bute

Storm Ashley will continue to bring strong gales into Monday next week, with another yellow weather alert in force.

It is in place over the Scottish Highlands again from midnight until 9am.

Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “A period of strong south to southeasterly winds is likely across western Scotland on Friday morning into the early afternoon, before easing and turning southwesterly through the afternoon.

“Wind gusts of 45-55mph are possible fairly widely for a time, and perhaps in excess of 60mph in more exposed locations.

“Given the wind direction and high spring tides, some disruption is possible.”

Transport Scotland has warned of likely disruptions to public transport, including the country’s ferry network.

A statement said: “A windy period is expected across the whole of the UK on Sunday and into Monday, but across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, north-west England and north-west Wales there is an increased chance of some disruption.

“These strong winds in conjunction with high spring tides may cause some disruption.”

Meanwhile, in the south of England conditions appear drier, with temperatures hovering at just above seasonal average.

However, much of the south and south east will be lashed with heavy rain this morning.

Those across the Midlands and Manchester are also forecast torrential downpours until around midday.

Conditions are set to clear up by the afternoon, with only a few intermittent showers expected in the north until Storm Ashley arrives tomorrow.

Much of the UK is predicted sunny spells today, in between cloud cover.

Brits in the south of England are due to feel highs of 17C, while lows of 11C are forecast in Scotland, elsewhere figures will hover at around 14C for most.

Avoiding injury if you’re out and about

Being outside in high winds makes you more vulnerable to injury. Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees.

Khamzat Chimaev is ‘just another man’ and I’m going to take the fight right to him at UFC 308, says Robert Whittaker

ROBERT WHITTAKER insists Khamzat Chimaev isn’t the boogeyman everyone thinks he is.

The Russian has run roughshod in the UFC since debuting on Fight Island in July 2020, with no one coming close to handing him his first professional loss.

But the Chechen clubber doesn’t intimate former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker[/caption]

The 30-year-old’s ferocious fighting style and James Bond villain-esque persona have made him a firm favourite with fans and made fellow welter and middleweights hesitant to share the octagon with him.

But the Chechen clubber doesn’t intimidate former 185lbs champion Whittaker – whom he’ll throw down with in the co-main event of UFC 308 on October 26 – in the slightest.

In an exclusive interview with SunSport, Whittaker said: “I think they believe they and read too much into the hype.

“Into the rumours and into everybody else. At the end of the day, he’s just another man.

“He’s just another guy who is the best in his gym, right?”

Unlike many MMA fans, Whittaker isn’t putting too much stock into the fact that Chimaev has yet to taste defeat as a professional.

“Mate,” he bluntly said. “Everyone has been undefeated at some point in their career, right?

“He’s not the first man that I’ve fought who is undefeated.”

Whittaker’s insistence that Chimaev is a mere mortal, however, doesn’t mean he thinks he has an easy task on his hands in their Abu Dhabi dust-up.

But the Australian doesn’t see the fan favourite as the toughest test of his career

“I think it’s the most pressing test right now,” he said. “Because. it’s a story left untold.

“It’s the unknown that’s worrisome and that gives this fight so much gravity.

“But I’ve had tests my entire career. I’ve had hard fights. I’ve had hard wins and I’ve had hard losses.

“But, yeah, this is what I do. I’m built for this and I was made to do this.

“And I’m gonna treat this fight like any other and get in there and just switch on and get to work.”

Defeats to current and former middleweight champions Dricus Du Plessis and Israel Adesanya either side of a win over Marvin Vettori left many wondering if Whittaker is a spent force in the division.

But he’s emphatically shut down that narrative this year with a decision win over former title challenger Paulo Costa and a demolition job of Ikram Aliskerov.

Whittaker’s first-round KO of the previously undefeated Aliskerov in June was very much his “Y’all Must’ve Forgot” moment.

And he has a message for those who believe he’s the proverbial lamb to the slaughter against Chimaev.

“You can’t sleep on me, man,” Whittaker said. “I’ve gone nowhere. I’ve fought only the best in the world.”

He added: “I’m gonna take the fight to him from the first second until the last second.”
