Met Office names first storm of the season after issuing ‘danger to life’ warning over 80mph winds & torrential rain

THE FIRST storm of the season has been named after forecasters issued a “danger to life” warning amid predictions of 80mph winds.

Storm Ashley has been named by Irish meteorological service Met Éireann – which warned of “very strong and gusty southerly winds”, coupled with high spring tides.

They said the warnings were valid starting midday on Sunday until 9pm that night.

Meanwhile the Met Office has warned of “especially strong winds” on Sunday afternoon and evening in Western Scotland.

They said gusts could reach up to 80mph in exposed areas.

But they said it would be closer to 65mph in other parts of the warning area.

“These strong winds in conjunction with high spring tides may cause some disruption,” the Met Office said.

They added that there is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris.

Arsenal tipped to sign former Man Utd star, 24, they could get on a free transfer next summer

ARSENAL legend Lee Dixon tipped his former club to sign ex-Manchester United ace Angel Gomes, whom they could get for free in the summer.

Gomes, 24, has been turning heads ever since rolling credits on his 11-year stint at United where he started out at the age of 6 in the academy.

The versatile midfielder moved to France in 2020 and has since amassed a staggering 123 appearances, despite spending a season on loan at Boavista.

That earned the defensive midfielder an England call-up by interim boss Lee Carsley and he proved he can play an integral part in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Gomes has been so good he left United fans scratching their heads and wondering why he was let go.

Dixon, 60, urged his former club to capitalise on the Red Devils’ inability to hold on to the England international, whom he described as a “superb” fit and the perfect partner for Declan Rice in midfield.

The former full-back predicted the North Londoners could indeed sign the United academy graduate for next season as his contract with Lille runs out in June.

Dixon told plejmo.com: “I think Angel Gomes would fit in at Arsenal superbly.

“His qualities are clear to see, he’s a very good link-up player and we’ve seen that he can play alongside Declan Rice.

“He’s got a lot of potential and although there will be plenty of clubs looking at him, I could see him at Arsenal next season.”

Arsenal keep strengthening in their bid to win their first Premier League title since the Invincibles’ campaign in 2004.

Dixon believes it is important to end that duck and urged his former club to also work on finally winning their first ever Champions League title.

The England international is adamant that titles need to be won and even claimed that manager Mikel Arteta would be deemed a “failure” if he failed to win any major trophies at the Emirates.

Dixon added: “If Mikel Arteta leaves Arsenal without winning the Premier League or Champions League at Arsenal you’d have to say it’s been a failure because that’s what he is there to do, to win the biggest trophies.

“He would be the first to say that and of course we don’t know how long he will be in the job, but not winning one of those would be a massive disappointment.

“It’s a tough competition to win of course, but Arsenal’s defence could be the key to winning the Champions League for the first time.

“It’s so tough to win, as Arsenal have proved over the years since they got to the final, they haven’t come anywhere close since.

“It’s tough with all the big teams and you do need a bit of luck, but you have to have a firm base and they have got that with their defence now.

“They’ve got that solidarity to build on and they need to get through the winter months with few injuries, that is the challenge for all the clubs in Europe.”

Liam Payne’s phone key to solving mystery around his tragic balcony fall death – as cops hunt drug dealer

LIAM Payne’s phone could be key to solving unanswered questions after he fell to his death from a hotel balcony.

Police in Argentina believe the circumstances around the former One Direction star’s death are suspicious and possibly involved drugs.

It is understood cops are hunting for a drug dealer who could have supplied illegal substances

Liam’s phone, which was removed from his hotel room and out at the disposal of the courts, will be key to determining who may have supplied any drugs.

His phone could also reveal what happened to the 31-year-old before he fell to his death in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

Police say there is no sign of a third party being involved in dad-of-one Liam’s death.

Cops discovered “what appeared to be narcotics, alcohol, destroyed objects and furniture” in his room at the Hotel CasaSur in Palermo.

Photos published by Argentine media showed white powder, burnt aluminium foil and a smashed TV screen inside his room.

It comes as…

Forensic teams reported that a whiskey bottle, lighter and mobile phone were retrieved from the building’s internal courtyard where Liam’s body was found.

But cops are yet to confirm what the substances found in the room are and are due to run tests on them shortly.

The singer had been open about his battles with addiction in the past.

final 911 call from hotel staff on Wednesday revealed they needed “urgent assistance” from cops to help with a guest “behaving erratically”.

Argentinian police said staff reported an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol”.

Recordings from the 911 calls made by the head of reception show them reporting “a guest who is destroying everything in his room”.

In a second appeal for help the receptionist said: “We need you to send someone urgently because I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger.

“They must be in a room that has a balcony. And well, we’re a little bit worried he’ll do something, that he’ll put his life at risk.”

Liam – who was in Buenos Aires for a holiday after going to see pal Niall Horan’s tour – was found dead in the hotel’s inner courtyard at around 5pm local time (9pm UK time).

His death was confirmed as soon as ambulance crews arrived.

Officials have said “everything indicates” that he was alone when he died and could have been partly or fully unconscious when he fell.

A full toxicology report is still pending and could take weeks to become public.

The prosecutor said that the autopsy showed internal bleeding and 25 traumatic injuries to his skull, limbs and abdomen, consistent with a fall.

One Direction statements in full

We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say.

But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.

We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam. – Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.

Louis Tomlinson wrote: “His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on.

“Thank you for shaping us Liam.

“I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.

“I wish I got a chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you.”

Zayn Malik said: “Liam I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me, I can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives.

“I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life.

“When I was missing home as a 17-year-old kid, you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let me know you were my friend and that I was loved.”

He added: “When it came to the music, Liam, you were the most qualified in every sense.

“I knew nothing in comparison, I was a novice child with no experience and you were already a professional.

“I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly.

“I will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever”.

And Harry Styles wrote: “I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing.

“His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it.

“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious.

“He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving.

“The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.

“My heart breaks for Karen, Geoff, Nicola and Ruth, his son Bear, and all those around the world who knew and loved him, as I did.”

It said those injuries alone were enough to cause his death.

A lack of defensive injuries on his hands indicated that he may have fallen into a state of unconsciousness, the public prosecutor said.

Last night, his former One Direction bandmates shared an emotional joint tribute.

Liam shot to fame alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik as part of One Direction after auditioning for X Factor in 2010 aged just 14.

They became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time before going their separate ways in 2016.

A statement from the band read: “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say.

“But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.

“We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam. – Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.”

BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball reacted to the “devastating news” on her show and told fans she hugged her own son Woody tight this morning.

JLS band member Marvin Humes reflected on his memories with the singer, sharing: “I first met Liam in 2008 with the JLS boys whilst auditioning for X Factor..he was 14 years old..

“We instantly clicked and looked at him as a little brother..that year it worked out for us but not for him and then 2 years later he went back to audition and One Direction was born..the rest is history..

“Absolutely heartbroken by the tragic news..Liam you wanted to be a global superstar and you did it bro..just can’t believe that things have ended this way..it’s shocking..my thoughts and prayers are with all your family and friends brother..RIP.”

The Gavin and Stacey actor wrote on Instagram: “Talking about Liam in the past tense is utterly heart-breaking.

“I will treasure the moments I got to spend with him. My thoughts are with his family today x.”

Payne previously appeared on Cordon’s The Late Late Show in America.

Former Little Mix star Jade Thirwall – who won X Factor with her bandmates one year after One Direction took part – described him as “the first friend I made in this industry”.

She said: “We fell out of touch as the years went by, but back in 2008 he was the first friend I made in this industry.

“Both of us so young, so ambitious, both hoping we’d ‘make it’. I hope you are at peace now”.

Camila Cabello described his death as a “tragedy” and said he “made an impression” on her when she was a young girl.

Barney Mitchell makes shock decision after family betrayal in EastEnders

BARNEY Michell is set to shock in forthcoming episodes of EastEnders next week.

The son of Teddy Mitchell and brother of Harry Mitchell (played by (Roland Manookian and Elijah Holloway respectively) is part of the family of Walford newcomers who’ve been stirring up drama since they circled the square earlier this year.

Teddy (left) and Harry Mitchell pictured with Priya Nandra-Hart in an EastEnders episode airing next week[/caption]

And now in spoilers of episodes due to air next week, sparks are set to fly when Barney, played by Lewis Bridgeman, makes a shocking decision.

The Mitchell trio are the secret family of Stevie Mitchell with Teddy the brother of Billy Mitchell that Billy was unaware of.

In the episodes, set to air from Tuesday 22 October onwards, a new family feud comes to light after a misunderstanding involving 15-year-old Avani Nandra-Hart (played by 24-year-old Aaliyah James).

The daughter of Ravi Gulati and Priya Nandra-Hart has an older boyfriend who Ravi wrongly believes to be Barney.

Davinder “Nugget” Gulati catches his sister Avani texting a mysterious boy, but she begs him to keep quiet.

Later, Ravi confiscates Avani’s phone, and enlists the help of Priya to get into it.

Priya tells him there’s nothing to worry about as Avani has told her in confidence that she’s going out with Barney.

Ravi decides not to go through her messages and later gives it back before she secretly heads off to meet her boyfriend Mason on Edward Road.

When she is seen back in Albert Square with a busted lip after an altercation with him over pressure to have underage sex, Ravi believes it to be Barney.

Teddy and Ravi come to blows as Ravi decides to make a spectacle of Barney and teach him a lesson.

Avani races to the scene and forces Ravi to give up on his plans.

Outside the café, Teddy and Ravi square up to each other and as the situation escalates the police arrive.

Later at No.1, Teddy calls Harry with a plan to hit back at Ravi, with the details of their revenge yet to be revealed.

While Teddy wants to make Barney feel part of the family, his efforts fall flat and Barney makes a huge decision.

Barney can then be seen speaking to someone on the phone.

Harry spots him talking to someone and he and his dad become concerned by what they overhear.

While we’re yet to find out what they have discovered from the phone call, fans of the show will be desperate to know if Barney was speaking to his mum, Nicola Mitchell.

Teddy’s estranged wife is set to make an imminent return to the soap to try to build bridges with her two sons.

While we don’t know the exact date of her return, what is known is that Teddy has been doing all he can to hide his wealth from Nicola so she doesn’t get what she’s due in the divorce.

Does this phone call give away any more family secrets?

Liverpool vs Chelsea preview

An intriguing encounter awaits as Arne Slot’s Liverpool clash with Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea in a battle between the Premier League’s two in-form sides.

Liverpool sit top of the division with 18 points from a possible 21, losing their only game at Anfield to Nottingham Forest.

Since that defeat, the Reds have won all six while scoring 16 goals and registering an impressive three clean sheets.

In fact, defensive solidarity has been a theme of Slot’s tenure. His side have conceded the fewest goals (2), kept the most clean sheets (5), and have the lowest expected goals against figure (5.2) of any side in the Premier League.

Liverpool are also unbeaten in their last six Premier League meetings with Chelsea, though five have ended level.

After a stuttering start, things have clicked for Chelsea.

The London heavyweights are fourth in the table and are enjoying a streak of five wins from their last six – drawing 1-1 with Nottingham Forest last time out.

Chelsea certainly don’t have the defensive record of their opponents, but they do have the edge in terms of attacking statistics.

Only Manchester City (17) have scored more goals than Chelsea (16) in the division this term, and only Tottenham boast a higher xG (15.0) than the Blues (14.7).
