One Direction star Louis Tomlinson says he’s ‘devastated’ by Liam Payne’s death & makes promise to the star’s son Bear

LOUIS Tomlinson tonight broke his silence on Liam Payne’s death by saying, “he was the most vital part of One Direction”.

Liam, 31, was in Buenos Aires when he died after falling from his third floor hotel balcony yesterday.

Liam’s autopsy revealed the star suffered severe injuries that led to “internal and external haemorrhaging”.

Today his One Direction friend poured his heart out about the singer’s untimely death.

Posting on Instagram he said: “I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother. Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul.

“I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got a chance to see the kind brother I’d longed all my life for.

“Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back in the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band.

“And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam.

“A message to you Liam if you’re listening.

“I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye.

“I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life.

“I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be.

“I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.

“I wish I got chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you.

“Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. Sleep well X”

It comes as Liam’s family issued a statement, which read: “We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.

“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”

Meanwhile, this afternoon harrowing pictures emerged that show inside Liam’s hotel room shortly after his fatal fall.

Argentine media have published troubling images showing white powder, burnt aluminium foil and a smashed TV screen.

Several images show what is reported to be the inside of the former One Direction singer’s luxury suite at the upmarket Hotel CasaSur Palermo, according to Argentina’s biggest newspaper Clarin.

Buenos Aires police confirmed the room was in a state of “total disorder”.

They released a statement saying: “Upon entering, total disorder was observed, with various elements broken.

“The balcony area was inspected in order to establish access to it.”

Clarin, Argentina’s biggest newspaper, published the images alongside a report saying: “Damage and drugs in the hotel room Liam Payne was staying in in Buenos Aires.”

The singer had been open about his battles with addiction in the past.

But cops are yet to confirm what the substances found in the room are and are due to run tests on them shortly.

It comes as:

final 911 call from hotel staff on Wednesday revealed they needed “urgent assistance” from cops to help with a guest “behaving erratically”.

Argentinian police said staff reported an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol”.

Witnesses at the hotel reported Liam had to be carried back to his room, according to TMZ.

Recordings from the 911 calls made by the head of reception show them reporting “a guest who is destroying everything in his room”.

In a second appeal for help the receptionist said: “We need you to send someone urgently because I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger.

“They must be in a room that has a balcony. And well, we’re a little bit worried he’ll do something, that he’ll put his life at risk.”

Liam was found dead in the hotel’s inner courtyard at around 5pm local time (9pm UK time).

His death was confirmed as soon as ambulance crews arrived.

A red tent was put up over Liam’s body as cops began to investigate the death.

Forensic police worked with ambulance staff at the scene before they moved his body to a morgue.

A post-mortem is expected to be completed soon.

The singer was in Buenos Aires for a holiday after going to see pal Niall Horan’s tour.

He had arrived on September 30 with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.

Weeping fans crowded outside the hotel holding a candlelit vigil overnight in honour of the beloved singer.

Liam leaves behind his seven-year-old son Bear whom he shared with Cheryl Cole after the pair met when Liam was on the X Factor.

Tributes to Liam Payne

SHOCKED fans flooded Liam Payne's last Instagram post with sad tributes as news of the singer's death emerges.

Harry Styles’ mum Anne was among the first from One Direction’s camp to share her reaction, posting a photo of Liam and writing ‘Just a boy…’ alongside a broken heart emoji.

Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden shared an image of the pair together with the words: “Such an awful tragedy.

“Sending love to his family and all those who loved him.”

X Factor star Olly Murs told fans he was “devastated” and “lost for words”.

He wrote on social media: “Liam shared the same passions as me, the same dreams so to see his life now end so young hits hard, I’m truly gutted and devastated for his Family and of course his son Bear losing a dad x”.

Liam Gallagher said he was “very sad” and told his followers on X: “Life is precious Kids, you only get to do it once, go easy.”

Former X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary has also expressed his shock and spoke on This Morning today.

He said: “I remember him as a 14 year old turning up to audition on The X Factor, and blowing us away singing Sinatra. He just loved to sing.

“He was always a joy, had time for everyone, polite, grateful, and was always humble.”

BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball reacted to the “devastating news” on her show today and told fans she hugged her own son Woody tight this morning.

JLS band member Marvin Humes reflected on his memories with the singer, sharing: “I first met Liam in 2008 with the JLS boys whilst auditioning for X Factor..he was 14 years old..

“We instantly clicked and looked at him as a little brother..that year it worked out for us but not for him and then 2 years later he went back to audition and One Direction was born..the rest is history..

“Absolutely heartbroken by the tragic news..Liam you wanted to be a global superstar and you did it bro..just can’t believe that things have ended this way..it’s shocking..my thoughts and prayers are with all your family and friends brother..RIP.”

Niall Horan’s brother Greg shared an emotional tribute to Liam, praising him as a “top young man”.

He added: “You will be forever missed. Liam, words can’t describe how much I want to grab my brother and mind him now while the world shows their memories of you and him and the boys.

“My heart goes out to your family parents and sisters and your son Bear and your 1D brothers.

“10th October we met and we started out that evening as 5 families into one big one 1D family thank you for all the laughs bro watch down on all your family and mind them lots of love kiddo x x x 1D 4 LIFE x x x”

German DJ Anton Zaslavski, otherwise known as Zedd, has taken to X with a devastated statement.

The producer, who worked with Liam on his 2017 hit Get Low, wrote: “RIP Liam… I can’t believe this is real…absolutely heartbreaking…”

American singer, Charlie Puth, who was friends with Liam and also collaborated with him on a song called Bedroom Floor, has posted a series of Instagram stories dedicated to him.

Alongside photos of the two of them together in their younger days, Charlie wrote: “I am in shock right now. Liam was always so kind to me.

“He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I can not believe he is gone…

“I am so upset right now, may he rest in peace. I am so sorry…”

Irish singer duo Jedward also took to social media, saying: “RIP Liam Payne. Condolences to friends and family.”

In another tweet, they added: “Sending strength to Cheryl and his son Bear. And all the One direction Family. RIP Liam Payne.”

American media personality Paris Hilton shared: “So upsetting to hear the news of Liam Payne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend.”

ITV weather presenter Alex Beresford shared a news video about Liam’s tragic death on Instagram, adding: “Can’t believe this! RIP Liam.”

Meanwhile Love Island star Molly Marsh penned: “I’m so taken aback, rest in peace.”

Lazy overweight people should NOT be given free fat jabs – the NHS can’t pay for their greed and bad decisions

ARE you fat? Are you out of work?

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, then I have a great offer especially for you.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting wants to offer free ‘fat jabs’ to help get obese people back to work[/caption]

Fat jabs can cost up-to-£200 a month[/caption]

I’m offering my spare room to anyone currently unemployed because they are too obese to get a job.

You can move in this weekend, I will lock the door shut and feed you a calorie- controlled healthy diet until you lose enough weight to be able to return to work.

And all for just a basic rent to cover room and board.

Does that sound like a good deal?

Because it’s certainly a much better deal than the one the Government is offering taxpayers to tackle the obesity crisis.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has decided that it would be a good idea for the NHS to offer free “fat jabs” to help get overweight people off the dole and back into work.

Nearly 250,000 people are expected to get the Mounjaro weight-loss jab on the NHS, including 3,000 as part of a trial to see if the monthly injections — similar to the better-known Wegovy and Ozempic jabs — can reduce the burden on the NHS and get people off their sofas and back to work.

Two thirds of adults in England are overweight or obese, with illnesses relating to obesity costing the NHS billions every year.

So it’s really no mystery why Government ministers want to narrow the nation’s waistlines.

But this plan won’t work.

These jabs have been hailed as a game-changer for the many millions who battle the flab, with many a famous name praising the drugs for their dramatic weight-reducing effects.

However, the evidence for this is actually very poor.

The drug companies’ own trials found that seven out of ten people taking part in the trials lost weight while having the jabs, shedding an average of ten per cent of their body weight over a year.

If you’re, say, 20st, that’s a 2st weight loss — just half a pound off a week, which is hardly a MIRACLE cure.

Crucially, the jabs are only licensed for use for two years and — guess what — as soon as people stop having them, they start piling the weight back on.

Does that really sound like a good use of your hard-earned taxes?

Of course it isn’t.

We’re told that spending billions on fat jabs could be far cheaper for the NHS than dealing with the long-term health impacts of obesity, but surely the cheapest option is for fat people to simply eat less and exercise more — which is not only guaranteed to work, it’s also 100 per cent free to the taxpayer.

‘PILING WEIGHT BACK ON’

After all, the NHS is already struggling to treat millions in genuine need and for whom simply giving up fizzy drinks and pizza is not a remedy.

Patients languish on waiting lists for cancer treatment, thousands are dying while waiting for care in A&E, and most of us can’t even remember what our GPs look like.

Yet the Health Secretary thinks it would be a grand idea to spend a FORTUNE on fat jabs? This is madness.

People have a right to eat what they want and to be as fat as they choose.

But they don’t have a right to expect the rest of us to pay for the consequences of their bad decisions.

If they really want weight-loss jabs, they can fork out the up-to-£200 a month cost for themselves.

And if they DON’T want to lose the flab and get a job, then I don’t want to pay for their benefits.

I’m sure the pounds will fall off them very quickly when they can’t afford their nightly Deliveroo.

And if they don’t have the willpower to fight the flab on their own, then my spare room is ready and waiting . . .

FAME is really bad for you.

Time and again we hear tales of how ordinary people are crushed by the pressures of becoming extraordinarily famous.

Liam Payne is just the most recent casualty of the pressures of fame[/caption]

Liam Payne is just the most recent casualty of this deadly affliction.

We don’t yet know why he fell from his Buenos Aires hotel balcony but a young man has tragically lost his life at just 31 and a young son has lost his dad.

At just 16, Liam became part of the 1D juggernaut, with smash-hit songs and sell-out concerts, travelling the world in private jets and living a life of luxury.

He was rich and famous beyond his wildest dreams, but that life is an exhausting and lonely existence, adored by fans but isolated from family, friends and reality.

Like many stars, his mental health suffered and he sadly turned to drink and drugs.

Fame has always been a double-edged sword, and especially in the era of social media when there is no escape.

But celebrity from a young age can be a fatal blow.

RACHEL’S RISE CLOBBERS JOBS

YOU don’t have to be a Nobel prize-winning economist to know that if you want to grow the economy, the one thing you definitely should NOT do is put a tax on jobs.

Yet that’s PRECISELY what Chancellor Rachel Reeves plans with her first Budget, on October 30, when she is expected to raise the rate of National Insurance contributions paid by employers for every worker on their payroll.

a woman in a purple jacket stands in front of a red and white background
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to raise the rate of National Insurance

The Treasury insists this isn’t putting up taxes on working people, but even the Office For Budget Responsibility says that the extra tax burden WILL fall mostly on workers, through fewer new staff being taken on and lower wage rises – while the rest will simply push up prices, which will hit everyone.

And the Chancellor knows it.

We know that because only a few years ago she blasted the Tories for planning a similar rise for exactly the same reasons.

This policy isn’t just a breach of Labour’s manifesto pledge not to raise National Insurance, it’s economic idiocy.

Watch moment Big Brother’s Khaled sparks new house feud as he takes brutal swipe at housemate in awkward task

THIS is the moment Big Brother’s Khaled sparked a new house feud as he takes brutal swipe at one of his housemates.

This week sees the house engulfed in the government shopping task, where some of the contestants are given special leadership privileges.

During the challenge, Big Brother hosted its own call in radio show for the ITV house.

The Prime Minister (Khaled) and his other Ministers faced hard hitting questions.

This was as the rest of the house – aka the citizens – were sat on the round sofa and heard everything.

Over the radio Big Brother sid: “Minister Nathan, you’ve raised concerns about some of the citizens being too nice and not showing their real selves.

“Who do you think is guilty of trying to fake it to make it? Who is gameplaying?”

Minister Nathan responded: “I think Izaaz is.

“This whole thing with the ‘Oh I like to s*** stir’, I’m unsure what’s going on there…

“Now in terms of being too nice, I go Sarah, but I might be wrong with that one but that’s what I think at the moment.”

He added: “But yeah, I’m not sure I’ve seen all sides to Sarah yet.”

Sarah was clearly angered by his comments as she picked up the house phone to respond to his comments.

“Hello Minister, or should I say Sinister,” she exclaimed as the rest of the house cheered.

However, it was Minister Khaled who faced the hardest grilling as Big Brother asked him who he would least likely to see as the head of the house.

He was asked: “Who would you really NOT like to be Head of House?”, by Big Brother

Khaled was absolutely brutal as he responded: “If I’m honest, Lily. I think it’d just be chaos.

Big Brother 2024 cast

A brand new batch of Big Brother housemates are living it up in the famous compound.

Meet the cast of the 2024 series:

  • Rosie, 29, dental assistant from Cornwall.
  • Emma, 53, aesthetics business owner from Altrincham.
  • Segun, 25, charity videographer from Watford.
  • Nathan, 24, pork salesman from Dumfries.
  • Daze, 24, climate activist from London.
  • Khaled, 23, sales manager from Manchester.
  • Martha, 26, NHS administrator from Scarborough.
  • Lily, 20, Chinese takeaway server from Warrington.
  • Ali, 30, Forensic psychologist from London.
  • Thomas, 20 amputee footballer from Carlisle.
  • Ryan, 28, marketing and events from Stockport.
  • Hannah, 24, HR consultant from West London.
  • Izaaz, 29, sales consultant from London.
  • Sarah, 27, spa account manager from Shrewsbury.
  • Marcello, 34, youth mentor from East London.
  • Dean, 35, barber from East London

“Which is completely calm, but if you’re Head of House you’ve got to make some really s***** tough decisions sometimes and I’ve yet to see that from her.”

Minister Daze did not agree as she admitted that Lily does have that side to her, just Khaled has not seen it yet.

But Lily was completely shocked by his comments as she ran over the phone in a huge blaze of anger.

She argued back with her fellow co-star down the line as she accused him of not having enough conversations with her to see her in that way.

Liam Payne was ruthlessly gobbled up and spat out by the music industry – his death has united the whole country

Liam’s pain

THERE are times when the death of a star unites the whole country in disbelief and grief.

The passing of Liam Payne at just 31 is one such terrible moment.

a man in a suit stands in front of a wall that says bmi
PA
The death of Liam Payne at just 31 unites the whole country in disbelief and grief[/caption]

That shock will have been felt in millions of households yesterday, such was the seismic fame of his band One Direction.

Not since The Beatles had a British group garnered such global fandom.

Their enormous appeal to a generation of young fans is the reason a talented but ordinary lad from Wolverhampton is being mourned worldwide.

But that notoriety also brought troubled Liam a level of stardom with which he ultimately struggled to cope.

Thrust together on X Factor, he and his four bandmates were the first pop megastars to be flung into the bile-filled cauldron of social media.

Everything he did — from going solo to fathering a child — was subject to both adoration and blistering criticism.

Unsurprising, then, that he struggled mentally as his personal relationships floundered and the music industry, which at first so greedily gobbled him up, ruthlessly spat him out again.

What a tragedy.

Clueless

SCRAPPING the Rwanda scheme looks more dumb by the day.

Yesterday the Dutch government revealed it may send Africans who enter illegally to Uganda.

Yet at the very moment that our European neighbours are rightly getting tough, post-Brexit Britain has suddenly gone soft.

By scrapping Rwanda without an alternative the Government has recklessly boxed itself into a corner.

Amnesty will now be granted to 62,000 illegal migrants — equivalent to a town the size of Margate or Kettering.

And as the Chancellor prepares a punishing Budget to fill a £22billion “black hole” in the nation’s finances, another £4million PER DAY will be spent on hotel accommodation.

But as the problem becomes more urgent — and vastly more expensive — the Government still has no answers.

Sin bagged

WHAT a stunning blow Israel has inflicted on Hamas.

Cowardly leader Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of the sickening mass murdera of October 7, has faced the justice he so richly deserved.

Wiping out the fugitive Hamas leader — who had been hiding in a tunnel packed with luxuries and food denied to his starving people — also shows Israel’s mission to rid the Middle East of jihadi terrorism must be allowed to succeed.

Britain and its allies must not falter in their support.

Beterbiev and Bivol were so good they could have fought without a referee – the epic fight was just what boxing needed

BOXING owes a massive debt of gratitude to Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, for giving us a fight in Riyadh last weekend that will live. long in the memory.

The pair of them provided a masterclass of attacking and defensive skills that brought nobility to the Noble Art.

two boxers are fighting in a ring with one wearing rival boxing gloves
Getty
Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol put on a show that displayed just how good boxing can be at its best[/caption]

They went into battle as unbeaten warriors and the prize to the winner was to be acclaimed the undisputed world light-heavyweight champion.

It was the kind of even match-up that is made in heaven and every fan on the planet had been looking forward to it for months with expert opinion divided as to who would come out on top.

The week-long build-up was extremely low key — it was unmistakable the two Russians had enormous respect for each other and weren’t interested in getting involved in pretending there was a grudge.

It was amusing to see the various TV interviewers desperately trying — but failing miserably — to get Beterbiev and Bivol to trash-talk and bad-mouth each other.

Very often the anticipation of such a consummate contest ends up being a bitterly disappointing anti-climax — the long-awaited Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao clash nine years ago is a classic example.

But within seconds of the opening bell such fears were knocked out as it became clear this would be extra special.

For 12 rounds the action ebbed and flowed non-stop between two proud, elite fighters calling on all their remarkable resources as they strived for supremacy.

As accurate hooks and jabs landed, Beterbiev and Bivol took their punishment without flinching.

There was hardly a clinch and I certainly didn’t see a single foul blow throughout the 36 minutes — in fact American referee Thomas Taylor didn’t need to be there as he had absolutely nothing to do.

It wasn’t the kind of brutal fight that had you gasping for breath — hardly a drop of blood was shed and there were no knockdowns.

But it was so tantalisingly close and absorbing and the skill levels were so high. It must have had most people purring.

At the end nobody could be sure whose hand was going to be raised in triumph — there was bound to be controversy whoever got it.

From my armchair view I thought, because of his grandstand finish in the last two rounds, Beterbiev just about earned his majority decision.

But both men gave their fellow pros a lesson in how to conduct themselves in victory and defeat — no histrionics from either.

Inevitably, Eddie Hearn — Bivol’s promoter — screamed his man was robbed as words like ‘disgusting’ and ‘disgraceful’ tripped off his tongue.

Hearn, at that time, didn’t know what Dmitry had said before he left the ring — when his disappointment must have been at its height.

There was no Bivol bellyaching, on the contrary, as he said of the decision: “It’s just the opinion of the judges. I just say congratulations to Artur and his team, he deserves it. No problem.”

How refreshing in this modern, money-mad world that boxing sportsmanship of the highest quality can still prevail.

Beterbiev is a man of integrity and there’s every hope he will do the honourable thing and give Bivol the rematch he richly deserves.

I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to see them fight again.

Football could change forever as England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain puts Arsene Wenger plan back on agenda

IF you have the ear of one of football’s most powerful men, you can make things happen.

And David Dein’s relationship with Arsene Wenger could lead to the biggest change the game has EVER seen.

Former Arsenal chief David Dein wants match time to be reduced[/caption]
a man stands in front of a wall that says the best
Getty
Dein’s friend Arsene Wenger is likely to consider the proposal[/caption]

Former Arsenal vice-chairman Dein is convinced the end of football being a 90-minute game is the way forward.

Dein and Wenger were Gunners colleagues for more than a decade and have been friends for nearly 30 years.

So when Dein asks Wenger, Fifa’s head of global football development and a key member of law-making body the International FA Board, to consider making football a 60-minute game, it will be taken seriously.

Dein’s argument is a simple one.

It is unfair to expect referees to also allocate the precise amount of additional time to make up for delays, time-wasting and ‘dark arts’.

Dein said: “I’ve asked all the refs in the Premier League, when the fourth official puts up the board for two, three or, four minutes, is that accurate to the last ten seconds?

“The answer is ‘No, no chance’.

“We should be able to know how long a game of football lasts — so my campaign is very simple.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

“The average length of time a ball is in play in the Premier League and most western European games is around about 55 to 57 minutes.

“I would like to see a real-time two halves of 30 minutes, where the ball is in play for 30 minutes each half.

“Let’s have a clock where we can all see how much time is left.”

Dein says analysis of the second half of England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain makes his points.

In total, the three goal celebrations, substitutions and stoppages after fouls meant more than nine minutes of playing time were lost, in addition to time for throw-ins and goal-kicks. But French referee Francois Letexier added just FOUR minutes after the 90.

Dein added: “A goal celebration is normally two minutes, a VAR check could be two minutes, injuries could be a minute or two, plus subs. Over a game, that’s at least ten minutes.

“That is ALWAYS more than the time that is actually added on.

“So I’d like to see time stopping when there is time being lost.

“The fans will get value for money, they would get an extra ten minutes of football.”

Dein is one of the game’s movers and shakers and is on first-name terms with Fifa and Uefa figures.

That allowed him to lobby Wenger and Ifab to give his idea a go.

Dein continued: “I’ve spoken to Howard Webb and Anthony Taylor, who said they were in favour.

“The next thing is for Ifab to agree to trial it.

“That could be anywhere but I’ve already talked to the Dutch league.”

‘It’s a disgrace’ – Frank Warren responds to Fabio Wardley ‘tainted gloves’ row

FURIOUS Frank Warren has slammed accusations Fabio Wardley shattered Frazer Clarke’s face with dodgy gloves.

Clarke, 33, needed emergency Saudi Arabian surgery to rewire his smashed jaw following a brutal first round KO defeat in Saturday’s British and Commonwealth heavyweight title rematch.

Shalom believes Wardley’s gloves are being investigated[/caption]

His promoter Ben Shalom claims Wardley’s customised 10oz Fly gloves are being investigated after British Boxing Board of Control’s medical chief Neil Scott likened Clarke’s injury to being hit with a BRICK.

Shalom said: “A doctor told me there’s no way in hell any boxing glove should be able to inflict that level of damage.

“It’s an ongoing process, something we are looking at, to see how these customised gloves are different.

“We were warned repeatedly by Frazer’s team about what gloves could be used.”

However, Warren, 72, stormed: “Frazer was a gentleman all week and has praised Fabio’s brilliant performance.

“The only person who has mentioned any suggestion of impropriety is Ben.

“It’s a disgrace Shalom has tried to tarnish Fabio’s win and reputation with such a dangerous suggestion.

“The British Boxing Board of Control checks and approves all gloves at the Friday meeting – which is filmed these days – and no issues were raised.

“I will be taking Shalom to the Board for bringing the sport into disrepute with this libellous allegation and questioning the integrity of the Board and everybody involved in the Riyadh show.

Warren’s ruthless reply was to comments Shalom had given to the Sportsman Boxing youtube channel, claiming: “There was a lot of talk during the week as to the gloves that were being worn by Fabio Wardley.

They arrive roughly every 29.5 days, which means you end up with about 12 Full Moons every calendar year.

With the usual pattern of about once every 29.5 days, Earth sees around 12 Full Moon’s each year.

But on some years, a 13th is squeezed in. That happened in 2023, but not in 2024.

Each Full Moon is given a special name.

Here’s the dates to look out for in 2024:

Four of this year’s moons are classed as Super Moons, because they appear even bigger in the night sky.

They’re a great opportunity to see the Moon at its very best.

The 2024 Super Moons are:

  • August 19
  • September 17
  • October 17
  • November 15

When is the best time to see a Full Moon?

As with any Moon, the best time is at night.

An area with little light pollution from the ground makes it even better.

And be sure to check the weather forecast so no pesky clouds block your view.

The Moon – our closest neighbour explained

Here's what you need to know...

  • The Moon is a natural satellite – a space-faring body that orbits a planet
  • It’s Earth’s only natural satellite, and is the fifth biggest in the Solar System
  • The Moon measures 2,158 miles across, roughly 0.27 times the diameter of Earth
  • Temperatures on the Moon range from minus 173 degrees Celcius to 260 degrees Celcius
  • Experts assumed the Moon was another planet, until Nicolaus Copernicus outlined his theory about our Solar System in 1543
  • It was eventually assigned to a “class” after Galileo discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter in 1610
  • The Moon is believed to have formed around 4.51billion years ago
  • The strength of its gravitational field is about a sixth of Earth’s gravity
  • Earth and the Moon have “synchronous rotation”, which means we always see the same side of the Moon – hence the phrase “dark side of the Moon”
  • The Moon’s surface is actually dark, but appears bright in the sky due to its reflective ground
  • During a solar eclipse, the Moon covers the Sun almost completely. Both objects appear a similar size in the sky because the Sun is both 400 times larger and farther
  • The first spacecraft to reach the Moon was in 1959, as part of the Soviet Union’s Lunar program
  • The first manned orbital mission was Nasa’s Apollo 8 in 1968
  • And the first manned lunar landing was in 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission

What is a Super Moon?

A Super Moon is relatively rare, occurring just a few times a year.

It happens because of a combination of two different astronomical effects.

This is when a new or Full Moon coincides with the moon’s closet point to Earth in its monthly orbit (known officially as perigee).

A Moon has to come within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth to be formally defined as a super moon.
