I’m a gardening pro & swear by a FREE hack to banish brown patches on your lawn – do it now before it’s too cold & wet

IF you want your grass to look fabulous, you’ve come to the right place.

There’s nothing worse than nasty brown patches ruining your lawn, but thanks to gardening pros, your grass will impress your guests in no time.

The lawn in front of the house is disturbed by pests and diseases causing damage to the green lawns, lawns in poor condition and requiring maintenance.

Whilst lawn care is a year-round task, it turns out that autumn is an important season to look at the problems lurking in your grass.

During the tough, cold weather, lawns need enough nutrients and growing power to dodge seasonal disease.

As a result, feeding grass with a nutrient-rich fertiliser in the summer is a gardening task many Britons undertake in the lead-up to summer and can even be applied well into autumn, as long as the product you use is specifically formulated for autumn application.

However, whilst many gardeners blame brown patches on their heavy-handed approach to lawn feed, experts at Greener Gardens have set the record straight.

The experts, who specialise in lawncare services, explained: “We often get asked about “brown” patches in the lawn.

“Typical customer comments are, “It is a result of poor fertiliser application.” In reality, when we examine the patches, it’s normally down to animal damage.”

The experts shared that brown patches caused by animal urine are difficult to spot early on, as the nitrogen’s initial effect actually makes the grass look healthier.

Described as “lush green patches” filled with lengthy blades of grass, the lawn experts explained that this happens as the animal urine breaks down into an additional source of nitrogen.

They added: “This then creates a nice green flush. However, too much nitrogen will burn and damage the grass plant, creating a brown spot in the lawn.”

Reversing the damage done to grass can achieve the same green flush and according to the experts, their free hack couldn’t be simpler.

It turns out that sometimes, all you need is water – yes, you heard that correctly.

The experts urged gardeners to pour water on spots where the animal has urinated to neutralise the nitrogen.

October gardening jobs

The Sun’s Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the jobs you need to tackle in October.

“It’s a good time to trim deciduous hedges – like box, yew, hawthorn, hornbean and beech – plus hedge trimmers are a great upper body workout!

Make leafmould – gather up all the fallen leaves and fill either bin bags or plastic carrier bags. Seal the top, stick a few small holes in the bag – and then store for a year or more. Free compost!

It’s unlikely you’ll get any more red tomatoes so have one final harvest and chuck the plants on the compost. See if you can get the green ones to ripen by putting in a drawer (some say with a banana). Also keep the seeds from a couple – and plant again next year if they went well.

Finish getting in your spring bulbs. Ideally you’d have done daffs and alliums, but tulips are better in the ground when the soil temperature gets a bit colder.

It’s good to leave some plant litter in the ground – it adds to the nutrients as it rots down, and provides shelter and food for insects. But remove the manky brown bits collapsing all over the lawn/winter structure.

Mulch – it not only suppresses weeds, but keeps the soil warm, improves water retention and adds a little winter duvet to your outside space.

October’s a good month for carrots, peas, asparagus, broad beans, and rhubarb.”

However, if you suspect your pet is doing the damage, train them to use other areas in the garden.

Alternatively, according to lawn experts, feeding the lawn with a fertiliser specially formulated for use in the cooler months of autumn will mask the brown spots.

How to preserve your favourite flowers at home – 5 easy tips explained

Which plants should I be wary about my dog being around?

When is the best time to prune roses?

When should I start planting daffodil bulbs?

How high can a garden fence be and can it be taller than my neighbours?

What colour of fence paint makes a garden look bigger?

Will my garden plants still grow if my backyard doesn’t receive any sun?

At the same time, another worthwhile method is to scarify the area, aiming for bare soil by removing as much of the damaged grass as possible.

The gardening gurus advised: “Rake the patch so that the soil is fine, loose and level. If it is not level with the rest of the lawn, fill it in with topsoil and rake it to level.”

But if you want to ensure your garden leaves your guests and neighbours gobsmacked, it’s important to do it now.

According to the experts, you must scarify before it gets too cold or wet, as mild, damp conditions are ideal for carrying out such maintenance.

Inside Wynne Evans HUGE cash fortune from singing and insurance ads before landing big money Strictly deal

STRICTLY Come Dancing star Wynne Evans amassed a huge fortune before landing his big money BBC deal.

The Welsh opera star, 52, is best known for playing a moustachioed soprano Gio Compario in financial comparison website Go Compare’s TV ads.

He’s also a distinguished singer who performs all over the world and has close ties with the Welsh National Opera, having performed in numerous classic roles from Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore to Jaquino in Leonore.

Wynne’s lucrative career has seen his self-titled limited business rack up an impressive £761,000 in capital and reserves.

The latest filings to Companies House, which were submitted earlier this year, show its coffers have swollen by just over £150,000 in one year.

Strictly competitors each get a flat rate of £25,000 for signing up to the show, regardless of their fame, but that can increase to up to £50,000 depending on how far they progress in the competition.

Success on the show often leads to money-spinning opportunities elsewhere and is perfect for growing a celeb’s profile.

Earlier this week we revealed Wynne and his professional dance partner Katya Jones have been rapped over the knuckles by BBC bosses for a viral incident that happened during Saturday night’s broadcast.

Show veteran Katya, 35, was seen removing Wynne’s hand as it slid further round her stomach in the section of Strictly when co-host Claudia Winkleman talks about what’s coming up next.

That came minutes after he was seen holding his arms up for a double high five from Katya, only for her to reject him, looking disgusted.

On Monday night’s BBC Two Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two, Katya insisted that the controversy had overshadowed their performance “for absolutely no reason”.

She added: “Quite frankly I actually can’t bear sitting here watching this man being portrayed as someone he’s not.

“In fact it couldn’t be further away from the truth.

“So I have to make absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I.

“Was it a silly joke? Yes. Was it a bad joke? Yes.

“However, it was a joke and even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is totally nonsense.

“Those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong.

“So hopefully this will be the end of it.”

Earlier in the night Katya was seen denying Wynne a high five[/caption]

Wynne added: “I’ve watched it back and I can see how people might have misinterpreted it.”

The controversy is the last thing the beleaguered corporation wanted after a summer of scandal which saw pros Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima leave the show amid allegations of bad behaviour.

Earlier yesterday, a TV insider said: “Strictly wanted to draw a line under one of the most troubling periods in the programme’s history, which had viewers deeply suspicious about what went on behind the scenes of the show.

“Allegations of inappropriate physical and sexual behaviour seemed to take some of the shine off the dance contest and bosses were looking forward to restoring the glitz and fun.

“Now there’s this bizarre incident which seems to suggest some tension between Wynne and Katya, not to mention inappropriate touching.

“The rap over the knuckles from Strictly was informal and there aren’t any plans to take any further action against them.

“But ultimately, amid all the controversy, viewers are left not knowing quite what to think.”

Behind the scenes, Beeb bosses are said to be furious about the incident, but seem to believe Katya and Wynne’s explanation that it was a gag both were complicit in.

On Sunday Katya and Wynne made a joint online video in which they apologised for what happened.

During it, Katya said: “We were just messing around in the Clauditorium and just want to say sorry.”

Major bargain chain with 850 branches launches new loyalty scheme where shoppers can get discounts

A MAJOR bargain chain is expanding its loyalty scheme to all its 850 stores and website from tomorrow.

Poundland is taking its Poundland Perks rewards app UK-wide, opening up points on purchases and product discounts for millions of customers.

Poundland is rolling out its loyalty scheme UK-wide[/caption]

The bargain discounter has been trialling the phone-based loyalty scheme at around 100 stores in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Wight since last year.

But the major retailer has now exclusively revealed to The Sun it will be extended to all UK stores and its website from tomorrow.

Shoppers can download the Poundland Perks app on to their smart phone via the Google Play and Apple App store.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Customers get discounts on at least 100 products at any one time and earn “perks points” on their purchases.

They will get one point per 1p spent and once they’ve built up 5,000 be able to redeem a digital voucher in-store or online toward the cost of their shopping.

That means they’ll have to spend £50 to get to 5,000 points.

Once shoppers have collected 5,000 points they will get £1 off a future shop.

To mark the launch of the loyalty scheme UK-wide, Poundland is offering customers the chance to accrue points on all products in-store and online until December 24.

After this point, customers will still be able to build up points on purchases, but only on selected products.

Bargain hunters will also be able to win points every Wednesday from October 23 via the app’s “Spin to Winsday” game.

Some of the prizes on offer include TVs, soundbars, free online delivery and on the spot point awards worth up to 1,000.

HOW SHOPS WILL CHANGE

Poundland said it was pumping around £20million worth of investment into store tills and self-checkouts to make them compatible with the new app.

The retailer said every self-service till will let customers earn and redeem points by December 1.

Meanwhile, every manned checkout will let customers scan the app from tomorrow.

The app is also fully usable on the poundland.co.uk website.

Poundland has far from stood still in recent years as shoppers turn their attentions to bargain chains amid a higher cost of living.

The discounter snapped up 71 former Wilko stores in September 2023 which included a mixture of high street and retail park sites.

Administrators for Wilko struck a deal with Poundland owner Pepco who said it would “prioritise” Wilko workers for roles.

Since the start of the year, 150 stores have been undergoing a huge regeneration project with new signage highlighting the best deals.

In May, Poundland also exclusively revealed to The Sun it would launch a new meal deal for just £3.

HOW IT COMPARES TO OTHER LOYALTY SCHEMES

Most UK supermarkets have loyalty schemes so customers can build up points and save money while they shop.

Iceland

Unlike other stores, you don’t collect points with the Iceland Bonus Card.

Instead, you load it up with money and Iceland will give you £1 for every £20 you save.

Lidl Plus

Lidl customers don’t collect points when they shop, and are instead rewarded with personalised vouchers that gives them money off at the till.

Morrisons

The My Morrisons: Make Good Things Happen replaces the More Card and rewards customers with personalised money off vouchers via the app.

Sainsbury’s

While Sainsbury’s doesn’t have a personal scheme, it does own the Nectar card which can also be used in Argos, eBay and other shops.

You need 200 Nectar points to save up £1 to spend on your card.

You need to spend at least £1 to get one Nectar point.

Tesco

Tesco Clubcard has over 17million members in the UK alone.

You use it each time you shop and build up points that can be turned into vouchers – 150 points gets you a £1.50 voucher.

Here you need to spend £1 in Tesco to get one point.

Waitrose

MyWaitrose also doesn’t allow you to collect points but instead you’ll get access to free hot drinks, and discounts off certain brands in store.

How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.

Scanner apps are useful to have on your phone. Trolley.co.uk app has a scanner that you can use to compare prices on branded items when out shopping.

Bargain hunters can also use B&M’s scanner in the app to find discounts in-store before staff have marked them out.

And always check if you can get cashback before paying which in effect means you’ll get some of your money back or a discount on the item.

Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? Get in touch by emailing money-sm@news.co.uk.

Man Utd ‘facing snubs from TWO January transfer targets’ as horror start leaves Erik ten Hag’s side 14th

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly facing snubs from two January transfer targets after their horror start to the season.

Erik ten Hag has endured an awful seven Premier League games after being handed a contract extension by Sir Jim Ratcliffe over the summer.

Two Man Utd targets are ready to snub a winter move due to Erik ten Hag’s poor form[/caption]

United have picked up just two wins so far this term to sit 14th in the table.

The first came in a fortunate late victory against Fulham.

While the other win saw United beat 10-man Southampton, who are joint-bottom of the table.

Another two matches so far have been draws.

While United have already suffered three defeats, including heavy 3-0 losses at Old Trafford to both Liverpool and Tottenham.

Their Europa League campaign is faring little better, with United so far drawing both of their games against Twente and Porto.

And the Mail claims their dismal form is now starting to affect their transfers.

It’s reckoned United have two major targets lined up for the January transfer window.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

But both candidates are now “having seconds thoughts” about accepting a move this winter.

It means United could be forced to look elsewhere for reinforcements.

And their budget is already tight after spending over £200million on five signings, who have all struggled so far.

Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte are yet to nail down first-team spots.

While Leny Yoro is yet to make a single appearance after fracturing his metatarsal in pre-season.

Noussair Mazraoui has had some joy so far at right-back.

But he’s now out for at least three weeks as he recovers from a heart procedure.

The ace’s absence is set to force a reshuffle for this weekend’s game against Brentford, with Diogo Dalot moving to the right and Jonny Evans in line to become an emergency left-back.

Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss, Adriana Lima and curve sensation Ashley Graham all took to the runway in New York City as they showcased some new must-haves from the sexy brand.

Not only were the likes of Gigi and Kate in attendance and storming the catwalk in lace lingerie, but iconic model Tyra Banks returned to the VS runway for the first time in 19 years.

Gigi could be seen rocking a sexy nightwear look which featured a babydoll chemise and some flippy shorts, both in a baby pink hue.

The model wore some gigantic pink feathery wings on her back, which she clutched onto like a backpack as she posed up a storm down the runway.

Kate Moss kept it a little more modest, with the iconic model rocking some lace lingerie underneath a lace dress.

Walking up and down the runway, the 50-year-old star looked poised and composed as she displayed her ageless figure in the lace garments and some black feathery wings.

Meanwhile, Adriana Lima who is a famous Brazilian model, returned to the VS Fashion Show in a plaid-themed look complete with sexy cut-out lingerie.

Adriana was a Victoria’s Secret Angel from 1999 to 2018, and also the longest-running model for the brand, with her even dubbed “the most valuable Victoria’s Secret Angel” in 2017.

‘FULL REPRESENTATION’

And Ashley Graham, known for her fuller figure and famous curves, also took to the catwalk.

Rocking a sheer lace cut-out bodysuit, the brunette beauty sashayed around the venue with the utmost confidence, posing at every moment she could.

Ahead of walking for the brand, she expressed her excitement for the “full representation” that was about to happen at the event.

Then, closing the star-studded show was legendary model Tyra Banks.

BANKS IS BACK

Nearly two decades had passed since Tyra walked for the lingerie brand, with her saying last month, “It feels crazy being back on the Victoria’s Secret runway. I mean, like, ‘cray cray,’ as in ‘cray cray good,’”

She added, “I never thought that I would be back on this runway, to be honest.”

And last night she wowed the crowds when she closed the show in a sexy ensemble.

Showing off her hourglass curves, Tyra rocked a bodysuit that covered her body complete with a bejeweled corset cinching her in at her waist.

She wore her hair in a voluminous style and looked fierce as she posed up a storm with a glamorous makeup look and nude lip.

Tyra Banks' DWTS Exit

Tyra Banks departed from Dancing with the Stars in 2023.

The supermodel quietly left the show after hosting for three seasons. Throughout her time on the ballroom dancing competition series, Tyra faced criticism over her hosting abilities. She eventually bowed out as host and executive producer—a role she held since her start on the show. Tyra was replaced by former DWTS pro dancer Julianne Hough.

Tyra last walked for the iconic Victoria’s Secret runway back in 2005.

“I was like, ‘This is it,’” Banks said. “It was so over-the-top, and I was like, ‘I’m out,’” she said last month, reflecting on her last stint almost 20 years prior.

As per WWD, Tyra recalled how her last walk for the brand in 2005 was when she donned a red outfit that had medals around her waist.

Tyra not only walked on catwalks for the brand, but she served as a Victoria’s Secret Angel from 1997 until 2005.
