In a first for grocery retailers, Checkers has covered an entire aeroplane with their Sixty60 branding. Whether it’s just a bit of mile-high marketing, or an extension of their delivery service, isn’t entirely clear.
“This festive season, Checkers will be adding something xtra special to its offering, to bring beloved family members together,” the Shoprite group said in a statement.
“Watch this space – more will be revealed soon.”
The teal Airbus A320, emblazoned with Checkers’ signature Sixty60 delivery service branding, was spotted for the first time at O.R. Tambo International Airport on Thursday.
The Checkers Sixty60-branded aircraft, operated by the award-winning airline LIFT, conducted its maiden flight between Johannesburg and Cape Town at 10:00 on Thursday.
Throughout the summer season, the plane will continue servicing key domestic routes, including flights between Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
Aviation enthusiasts can follow the Checkers plane’s journey using its registration number, ZS-GAS, via online tracking platforms.
A ‘pet lounge’ has just opened at O.R. Tambo airport
In related news, an aviation services company has unveiled a dedicated pet lounge at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo Airport.
Swissport is offering a significant upgrade to the handling of unaccompanied, travelling pets.
The company says the move highlights their commitment to animal welfare and operational excellence.
The new Pet Lounge, designed specifically for the import and export of unaccompanied pets, is separate from Swissport’s general air cargo warehouse.
It aims to provide a calm, stress-free environment tailored to the needs of animals in transit. The facility features air conditioning, water service, and “soothing” music to help reduce stress, making the pets’ stay as comfortable as possible.
Swissport’s chief executive for South Africa, Khangi Khoza, announced the lounge as a new benchmark for animal handling at South African airports.
“The Swissport Pet Lounge sets a new benchmark in animal handling at an airport in South Africa, making the stay for our special travellers as relaxing as possible,” Khoza said. Read more on that story here.
