Kaizer Chiefs take on SuperSport United in the first round of the Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday evening.
Amakhosi were drawn away to Matsatsantsa in the last 16 of the competition as their quest for a trophy continues. The Soweto giants have not won any silverware for the last nine years but under the new coach Nasreddine Nabi, there seem to be a new believe.
SuperSport United and Chiefs do battle back-to-back
The two teams face this Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium at 20:00. SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt is desperate for a trophy this season having lost out in the MTN8 quarter-finals against Orlando Pirates. Matsatsantsa have not tasted silverware in years and this might be their chance to get something out of the competition.
SuperSport and Chiefs will play each other again in the Betway Premiership seven days later after their cup match. Amakhosi goalkeeper Brandon Petersen said he was excited to play against his former coach. “Obviously, it’s always exciting to play SuperSport and also our former coach (Gavin Hunt), a guy who knows the ins and outs, so I’m looking forward to it.”
“I think this is the start for us; it’s the first trophy up for grabs for us. I think we have started off on the right footing and we want to go on,” Petersen said.
For Chiefs to win the Carling KO, they will need to overcome SuperSport this weekend and potentially other rivals as well. Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns were given easier draws and are more likely to reach the quarter-finals.
Can Nabi take Chiefs to the promise land?
