A first look at Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie has sent fans wild.

The Oppenheimer actor, 48, originally starred in the BBC series from 2013 until 2022, and is now returning for the ‘explosive’ Netflix film.

As well as collaborating with producer Steven Knight, Cillian will be starring alongside Tim Roth, Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson and Saltburn star Barry Keoghan.

Though further details about filming and the storyline have yet to be revealed, fans have now been given a first look at Tommy’s return.

Production for the upcoming film is officially underway, though a release date has yet to be announced, with pictures of the movie set in Liverpool also having been revealed.

The ‘secret location’ looks to be like an abandoned industrial building, with reports that security was tight with blacked out vans bringing the cast to set.

‘Is it 2025 yet? I need this movie now,’ @cinefryy begged.

‘OH WE’RE SO BACK,’ @tameeshelbee wrote.

Several others echoed they ‘can’t wait’, while @abdizo_kharim wrote: ‘This is bombshell.’

‘Welcome home Mr Shelby,’ @peakykoko said.

The image shows an older version of the gang leader, with greying hair, wearing a sharp black suit with a serious look.

‘It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,’ Cillian shared earlier this year.

‘It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.’

Peaky Blinders, which ran from 2013 to 2022 for six seasons, followed the rise of the Shelby family from after the First World War, and the film is now expected to pick up a few years later, going into the Second World War.

Knight told Deadline: ‘I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.’

Executive producer Tom Harper added: ‘There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew.

‘We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.’

According to reports, Knight previously said that the show would end with the first air-raid siren in Birmingham in 1939, but that didn’t happen, leading to speculation it may be where the movie picks up from.

Instead, the final episode ended with Tommy discovering that he wasn’t sick with terminal tuberculosis thanks to a supernatural intervention, and rode off on a horse, awaiting what the future holds in store.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
