Deadpool & Wolverine has overtaken Barbie on the international box office charts.
Marvel’s latest hit has knocked Greta Gerwig’s Barbie down a notch, taking the title as the 12th highest-grossing film ever in North America.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE VS BARBIE
Over the weekend, the R-rated superhero flick added a solid R13.1 million to its already impressive total. This brought its haul to R12.3 billion.
That slight boost was enough to edge out Barbie, which currently stands at R12.3 billion, according to Variety.
Despite this win, Barbie still reigns supreme at the global box office. The plastic and fantastic comedy has raked in a whopping R27.9 billion worldwide.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’S SUCCESS
In contrast, Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has earned R25.8 billion globally.
While it hasn’t quite reached Barbie’s international success, the film continues to shatter records, especially for an R-rated movie.
Released in July, Deadpool & Wolverine has been a box office powerhouse since day one, according to IMDB.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: BIGGEST R-RATED OPENING
It debuted with a staggering R4.1 billion, setting a new record for the biggest R-rated film opening ever.
Now, it holds the crown as the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Fans have flocked to cinemas to watch Reynolds and Jackman reprise their iconic roles as Deadpool and Wolverine.
Their onscreen chemistry, along with the film’s action-packed and irreverent humour, has clearly struck a chord with audiences worldwide.
THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
In the realm of superhero films, Deadpool & Wolverine is standing tall. It’s now the seventh-biggest film within Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The film has even surpassed Iron Man 3 at the global box office, which earned R23.6 billion.
The only MCU films that have performed better are the four Avengers sequels, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Black Panther.
With 31 MCU films in total, that’s no small feat.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE PRODUCTION AND CAST
Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine brings together fan favourites from the Marvel world. This includes characters that were previously part of 20th Century Fox.
Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Chris Evans’ Human Torch, and Wesley Snipes’ Blade join Deadpool and Wolverine on a thrilling, time-bending mission.
THE GREAT CROSSOVER EVENT
This crossover event has drawn massive attention, with many fans excited to see these beloved characters share the screen.
“Seeing all these characters together was like a dream come true,” one fan gushed.
“Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were hilarious and badass, as always. I couldn’t stop laughing and cheering.”
GREAT PERFORMANCES
Although it’s packed with humour, the film also has its fair share of heart and high-stakes drama.
Levy’s direction balances the wild antics with emotional depth, making it a hit with both die-hard comic book fans and casual moviegoers.
It’s no surprise that Deadpool & Wolverine continues to climb the box office charts.
ENERGY AND HUMOUR
Even with strong competition from Disney’s other big release of the year, Inside Out 2, which has grossed R32.6 billion globally, the superhero duo is holding its ground.
South African audiences, in particular, have embraced the film’s chaotic energy and humour.
With Marvel’s widespread popularity in the country, it’s clear that Deadpool & Wolverine is destined to stay in the spotlight for some time.
