EastEnders stars Heather Peace and Balvinder Sopal have given their thoughts on Coronation Street’s newest love story – and they make some excellent points.
It’s always a pleasure to chat to the Eve Unwin and Suki Panesar stars, and tonight’s conversation at the Inside Soap Awards was no different – and our talk was certainly varied!
This weekend, Corrie announced that Carla Connor (Alison King) and DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) would share a charged moment in upcoming scenes, that leaves Carla questioning her feelings.
The announcement made waves on social media, and even caught the attention of Heather, who shared a post about the importance of sapphic representation in soap.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, she elaborated further, saying: ‘I just went on Twitter and there wasn’t loads of negativity, but it was like, “Oh, they’re doing it now.” It’s like, there’s not one straight couple in a soap!
‘Literally every story, my story is not the same as my wife’s story. It’s not the same as Suki’s story, as Eve’s story. All of these stories are equally valid and representation across the board.
‘And also, Corrie viewers don’t necessarily watch EastEnders and vice versa. All of the representation – their story is not going to be the same as ours. Give me all! All of the stories!
‘And we definitely shouldn’t be pitting them against each other! That’s nuts!’
Balvinder, who scooped up the award for Soap Superstar, was quick to agree, adding: ‘I don’t think that’s a good thing to do. Representation is representation, and if it’s about a particular community, or group of people, everybody should be celebrating that.
‘There is no reason for anybody to go, “Well they’re doing it better…” If you’re in that game, then you’re not watching it for the representation, and what it means to people, and why these stories are really important.’
Of course, we spent plenty of time chatting about their own on-screen relationship, with Heather promising plenty more excitement to come for Suki and Eve!
‘We’ve got some new scripts which I’m really excited about!’ Heather told us.
‘New scripts landed last week, so there is lots to play with. Just watch this space, as they say!’ Balvinder added, with Heather quick to joke that that is the answer they give us every year!
‘But it’s really exciting and we’re really excited about it as well,’ Balvinder continued. ‘There’s some really wonderful stuff that we haven’t ever broached before, and it’s a big deal.

‘It’s a really big deal, because you’ve got Suki and Eve, from different cultures, different backgrounds, women of a certain age, actually making it – however that pans out later in the future is a different story, but we’re there! We’ve got there!’
‘There’s just some really nice conversation, and there’s some really nice moments. There’s a lot of scenes there that I’m excited to do and I’ll be checking the schedule for when we’re doing them, which is great!’ Heather finished.
However, it may not be all plain sailing for the couple, with Balvinder promising fireworks ahead. What does the future have in store?
Oh, and if you’ve been waiting for an update on the Kim Woodburn situation, it’s bad news, I’m afraid…
